Initial Review, 4,000 Miles on Tires
May 16, 2012

We recently purchased the Continental tires and had them put on our vehicle in Waco, Texas. We drove home to Canada through torrential rains and really tried out the tires in Wyoming. We never drove below 70 miles/hour and were more than impressed! Most vehicles drove at a snail's pace and we felt very safe staying closely behind a large truck at the indicated speed. Much better than the Kumho that were on the car originally. We also ordered new wheels and snow tires from Tire Rack to put on the car in the Fall and can hardly wait to try these although we expect that the Continentals will be just fine. The wheels were FANTASTIC and very cheap!!! Service form Tire Rack was better than excellent. We are first time customers and will definitely be back, especially since we have children and grand children living in the USA. Our order that was sent to Waco came perfectly on time and the tires + tires/wheels were wrapped-up beautifully. We'll be back Tire rack and Continental. J.H. Lethbridge, Canada.

Initial Review, 4,000 Miles on Tires
April 16, 2012

After selling my 2005 Prius with lowering springs, rear sway bar, under bracing and 17" wheels (Primacy MVM4 tires), I was a bit disappointed when I purchased a 2012 Prius that came equipped with Yokohama AVID S33D tires. The ride was nothing to write home about, the traction was a bit unpredictable and the car was more apt to tramline than anything else I had ever driven. I immediately swapped out the tires thanks to Yokohama's customer satisfaction guarantee and I installed the AVID Ascend in their place. The wet/dry gripe is pretty incredible for a tall 15" tire. Road noise is low most of the time with minimal pinging on expansion joints. Fuel economy is comparable to the OE AVID S33D but everything else about the Ascend is superior. Now if they last as long as Yokohama claims they will then they will have a winner on their hands. :) It should be noted that steering response and overall handling seems better than the Energy Saver A/S. if you want a better handling tire then get the Ascend. If you want max MPG then take a look at the Energy Saver A/S.

New Kosei K4R for the E36 M3

Thursday, April 19, 2012 by Cy Chowattukunnel

The E36 M3 is hard to beat for a practical street/track car. It handles great, has great aftermarket support and is relatively light. For years, the bread-and-butter E36 track set-up has been 245/40-17s on 17x8.5 40mm offset Kosei K1 Racing wheels. As drivers of this vehicle already know, the larger front size provides more neutral handling.

The K1 Racing has been a great wheel with one minor issue - no center caps. If your E36 M3 is purely a track car, this isn't a big deal. However, if you run your car mostly on the street and prefer more of a finished look, you may want to consider the new 17x8.5 40mm offset Kosei K4R.

With its nine-spoke design, the K4R has a different look compared to the K1 Racing. More spokes typically means more strength, which demonstrates the K4R only adds to Kosei's record of providing strength, value and durability. Also, the K4R weighs in at 15.4 lbs. compared to 16.8 lbs. for the K1 Racing.

For someone that does a mixture of street, track and autocross driving on a single set of tires, it's hard to beat the Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec. The tire provides a very sticky grip, is versatile and is available at an affordable price. Currently, 245/40-17 Z1 Star Specs mounted and balanced on a set of 17x8.5 40mm offset Kosei K4R wheels is available for only $1,512.**

Kosei and E36 M3 FAQ:

  1. Do the K1 Racing and K4R require a center ring and/or different bolts? Both the 17x8.5 40mm offset K1 Racing and K4R have a 72.56 mm and BMW lug seats, therefore neither requires centering rings or different bolts.

  2. I love this wheel but it doesn't appear in the Upgrade Garage's listing for my vehicle, what other options are available? While our Upgrade Garage is updated frequently and provides a comprehensive and thorough list, contact one of our sales specialists if you're attempting to run a custom fit.

Spring has Sprung, Let's Go Have Some Fun with Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec Tires!

Tuesday, March 20, 2012 by Doc Horvath

With most of the country experiencing warmer-than-average temperatures, many driving enthusiasts, including myself, have shed their winter / snow tires and wheels for "stickier" summer tire options. For the last few years, the Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec has consistently been a staff favorite in our tests, as well as a best seller for those looking for a great balance of exceptional dry and wet traction.

Soon after the tire was introduced, we performed our internal tests, and more recently I had an opportunity to test the Z1 Star Spec at BMW's training and testing facility in South Carolina. All those who participated were very impressed.

In our wet skidpad and slalom testing, the Direzza Z1 was poised and very predictable right to the limit of the car which mirrored our customer's feedback and survey results. The tire also proved to be relatively quiet and expected life span is consistent with the competition.

Are you looking for Miata tires or something for your Honda Civic? Or maybe you're interested in M3 tires or a set of tires for your Porsche 911. Dunlop knows their customer base and that's why the Z1 Star Spec is offered in a wide range of sizes from 14" up to 18". This allows drivers with both smaller and larger applications to enjoy the race-like traction of the Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec.

Looking for the Best Autocross Tires?

Wednesday, March 7, 2012 by Zig Ziegler

Choosing the best tire is one of the most important factors of a successful autocross season. Racers spend lots of time and energy in extracting every ounce of horsepower and torque from their engine, and sometimes forget that all of this power is useless unless it can be effectively transferred to the track. There are four small patches of rubber that play the most important role in determining your vehicle's level of performance.

There are two distinct groups of autocross tires. The first group is made up of dedicated track tires that are D.O.T. approved, but are never intended for street use. Drivers using these tires want maximum dry grip and will have separate wheels to install at the track. I believe the best tires in the Track & Competition DOT category are the Hoosier A6, Hankook Ventus Z214 and Kumho Ecsta V710.

Hoosier A6
Hoosier A6
Hankook Ventus Z214
Hankook Ventus Z214
Kumho Ecsta V710

The second group of tires is for the autocrosser who's willing to sacrifice some dry grip in order to have a tire they can drive to and from the track. In the Extreme Performance Summer category I like the Bridgestone Potenza RE-11, Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec and Hankook Ventus R-S3.

I think these tires are the best choices in each group because of their dry traction and steering response are some the highest rated by customers who have used the tires. Unlike shopping for any other tire, these are the two most important attributes to an autocross tire. Anything else like ride comfort or road noise is ancillary to your autocross needs.

Whether you're looking for Hoosier tires for sale, Hankook reviews or to buy Dunlop tires, our website offers you everything you need to have the best autocross season!

Custom Colors Available for Ultraleggera HLT

Monday, March 5, 2012 by Ben Rooney

Thanks to the success of its custom color's program for the Alleggerita, O.Z. Racing is offering the same program for the Ultraleggera HLT. The HLT manufacturing is used to make larger wheel sizes lighter than they would otherwise be. For the Ultraleggera, nearly all 20" and most 19" sizes are produced using the HLT manufacturing process.

O.Z. Racing's color program is designed for tuners and enthusiasts seeking a distinctive wheel finish that stands apart from the usual silver, black or grey options that are by far the most common in the wheel industry. A few of the available colors include: red, orange (pictured), white and gold.

O.Z. Racing builds and finishes each set of these wheels to order in Italy. Special orders in this program will take approximately 60 days to deliver. If you're willing to wait, the reward is a distinctive set of wheels that combine unique color with the high finish quality characteristics of all O.Z. Racing wheels. The Ultraleggera HLT can be ordered by itself, or you can select a tire to create a Tire & Wheel Package. To see if the Ultraleggera HLT is available for your vehicle, shop by vehicle

Michelin X-Ice Xi2: Second Season Review

Wednesday, February 29, 2012 by Gary Stanley

My first impression of the Michelin X-Ice Xi2 can be found in my blog post "My Story on Winter Tires." The tires are well into their second winter season, and despite the relatively fair winter weather this year, we received some significant snowfalls that could have created some very tricky driving conditions. Fortunately, my Michelin X-Ice Xi2 winter / snow tires are still going strong.

For my 2009 Infiniti G37x, I was limited to the 225/50R18 size. I have always used Bridgestone Blizzak tires as my previous winter / snow tire set-up, but the tires are not made for my car. A bit hesitant, my fears turned out to be completely unfounded in regards to the Michelin X-Ice Xi2.

In addition to driving on ice and snow-covered roads, I've had the opportunity to drive extensively on slush, wet and dry roads thanks to winter's unseasonably warm weather. The tires are still smooth and quiet riding on both dry and wet roads and feel very much like an all-season tire. When the road conditions are snowy or ice covered, I have all the traction that I need to drive with confidence. I haven't felt any reduction in ice or snow traction during this second season on the tires.

Don't just take my word for it, here are what some of our customers have said about the Michelin X-Ice Xi2 :

"Excellent tire. I have purchased Michelin winter tires and summer tires for at least 12 years. The Xi2 is one of the best winter tire models I have purchased within that time. They are great on dry roads, low noise, good steering as compared to most winter thread. But the best comments are on the winter roads. Great traction in slush and ice, very minimal hydroplane, good braking. They will not fail you in a Western New York lake effect snow storm. If you are undecided on winter tires... you must try the Xi2. I am not a Michelin salesmen...sometimes you buy some thing you really enjoy sharing about." - Tire Rack Consumer Review, 2002 Toyota RAV 4.

"Working as a real estate appraiser in Northwest Rural Michigan, I drive every conceivable road and gradiant; from sand two-tracks to the state's famous 55mph pothole special, two lane state thoroughfares. Recently, I had a 150 mile day with side roads of glare ice (road crowns, uphill) astonishing traction, anti slip control never went on. I have never had so much as a wheel slip on my wife's Quattro in snow. Faultless on slight to moderate snow, solid even in slush. The truck never would have made it that day and I prefer it over my F-350 (Michelin LTX A2) in all but the deepest sand or snow conditions, but can't usually pry it away from my wife." - Tire Rack Consumer Review, 2006 Audi A4.

"The high ratings are in the context of these being dedicated snow tires. In deep snow (4-6 inches) my rear drive M3 can easily out accelerate front drivers from a stand still. I have been using this model tire for the last 5 winters. They are great when it gets icy; quiet for snow tires." - Tire Rack Consumer Review, 2002 BMW M3.

Keep driving fun and invest in some great winter / snow tires.

Goodyear Assurance ComforTred Touring = Quietest Tire?

Wednesday, February 15, 2012 by Hunter Leffel

Goodyear Assurance ComforTred TouringA quick look at our Tire Survey Results shows the Goodyear Assurance ComforTred Touring is currently the top-ranked Grand Touring All-Season tire. When looking a bit deeper at the results the tire sits on top in the hydroplaning resistance, light and deep snow traction, ice traction, and noise comfort categories.

We also conducted our independent test of this tire against three of its peers. We found that the tire delivered very similar road comfort, noise levels and on-road responsiveness as the test-winning Michelin Primacy MXM4. Fuel economy results found the Goodyear Assurance ComforTred Touring leading the way by just over 1%.

In the track part of our test, we found that the at-the-limit grip for this tire was adequate for this performance category. It did have wheel spin under hard acceleration a bit sooner than the Michelin and it wasn't quite as easy to take out to the limit of traction. During wet lapping, we found what is arguably the weak point for the Goodyear. It posted slower lap times and struggled with quick changes in steering and throttle inputs. However, this is in a track environment, something rarely, if ever seen on a daily commute. View the test report here.

The feedback from customers has been overwhelmingly positive with comments such as:

"Road noise immediately went down and the van rode like it was on a cloud. Most importantly, they cut through snow and ice in Colorado (even mountain country when we went skiing) like it was butter." -- Tire Rack Consumer,  2004 Toyota Sienna .

"They are super quiet, and they provide a very smooth comfortable ride even with her aggressive driving style." -- Tire Rack Consumer, 2003 Acura 3.2TL-S

Wheel Spotlight: KMC XD Series Rockstar

Wednesday, February 8, 2012 by Ben Rooney
KMC XD Series RockstarThe Rockstar has been one of the most popular wheels in the KMC XD Series lineup. Its classic five-spoke design combines with a deeply concave face and unique 'floating' center cap for a look that is both distinctive and aggressive. Having seen these wheels on trucks in our parking lot, I can definitely say they stand out.

Available to fit a wide variety of trucks and SUVs, the wheel's wide widths and negative offsets are available to accommodate many lifted applications with oversized tires. It is available in diameters up to 24" and widths as wide as 12". Not all widths and diameters will be available for every vehicle application, but there are a broad range of fitments from which to choose.

The wheel also comes in a version for dually pickups. Read a prior blog post of mine for details on custom wheels for dually trucks, as well as a photo of the Rockstar in the dually version. That version has a somewhat different appearance due to unique fitment requirements.

Besides the black painted version shown above, the Rockstar is also available in a chrome and machined with black accent finish. As with any of our wheels, you can shop by vehicle to see which truck rims are available to fit your application.

Classic Styling and the MSW Type 14

Thursday, February 2, 2012 by Marshall Wisler

MSW Type 14While wheel selection is more often than not determined by one's own individual taste, I have always been a fan of simple wheel styles. As such, one wheel that I recommend to customers time and time again is the classic 5-spoke MSW Type 14. Featuring a silver painted finish and thin pronounced spokes, this wheel has an Original Equipment look and is easy to keep clean using simple washing techniques.

The MSW Type 14 is available in sizes ranging between 14" to 18" in a wide variety of widths and bolt patterns. As one of the more cost-effective aftermarket wheels available, these wheels have been a hit with customers looking for a subtle aftermarket fitment.

Moreover, these wheels are also one of the many popular styles included in our 2012 Wheel Clearance Event

Affordable 20" and Larger Yokohama SUV Tires and Yokohama Truck Tires

Thursday, January 12, 2012 by Marshall Wisler
If you oYokohama Parada Spec-Xwn a sport truck, SUV or vehicle capable of fitting 20" and larger wheels, you may have become accustomed to paying high prices for tires or sacrificing quality to meet your budget. Recently, as larger wheel and tire assemblies have become more mainstream, the cost for these larger tires have fallen.

Although tires that feature a larger inside diameter and width may never be as cost-effective as traditional 15-17" sizes, it seems that on a daily basis I'm able to stun customers with prices that are lower than they expected.

One of my favorite selections to recommend to customers looking for a 20"-28" tire is the Yokohama Parada Spec-X. This tire, available in 39 different sizes, makes selection easy and affordable. With a speed rating of either H or V, these Yokohama tires also meet most manufactures' requirements for use on today's high performance vehicles. Featuring an all-season compound with a host of biting edges, the Yokohama Parada Spec-X is designed for use in all climates.

If you're looking for Yokohama tire reviews of the Parada Spec-X take a look at our Tire Survey Results.

New Elbrus Wheels for Your 3-Series BMW

Wednesday, January 11, 2012 by Logan Woodworth

Elbrus I08For those of you looking for a custom wheel for your late model BMW 3 Series with the appearance of the M3 wheel, Tire Rack has the solution. The Elbrus I08 is a great addition for someone looking for an inexpensive Winter / Snow Tire & Wheel Package for their 3 Series coupe, sedan or convertible.

This particular wheel would also be ideal for someone who has a late model 3 Series and would like to give their Bimmer the M3 look without the M3 price tag. These wheels are nearly identical to the styling of the Original Equipment wheels at a fraction of the cost.

Elbrus wheels are manufactured using the latest pressure cast technology and feature an extremely durable I.C.E coating. Not all alloy wheels are created equally and there are several casting methods used to manufacture alloy wheels. These Elbrus wheels are high pressure cast and are more resistant to damage than standard gravity cast. They also offer a durable finish well suited for winter use.

Wheel Clearance Event - Forged Rear Fit for Honda S2000

Wednesday, January 11, 2012 by Cy Chowattukunnel
In a17x8.5 65mm Offset Silver Paint TRM F3nticipation of new wheel designs arriving in the spring, now is the perfect time to update your vehicle with clearance pricing on a great selection of wheels during our Wheel Clearance Event.

If you've modified your Honda S2000 and/or you're open to custom fit wheels you may want to consider the rear fit 17x8.5 65mm offset 64.1mm center TRM F3 wheel that's been marked down from $459 to $199* per wheel!

These silver painted TRM (Tire Rack Motorsports) wheels were manufactured for us by Enkei. They are forged for the optimum combination of strength and weight (16.6 lbs.). Since the normal matching 17x7 55mm offset front wheels are sold out you would have to run these wheels as a "custom fit" to fit in the front or use them as a drag race wheel for the rear.

A "custom fit" is bigger than what we've test fitted and will require fender modification and/or the use of spacers. Given that these $459 wheels have been marked down to $199 per wheel they may be a good selection to go with your S2000 tires.

Since the TRM F3 accepts the original Honda center cap and lug nuts, separate center caps are not included.

Supplies are limited, so be fast like your S2000 and get them while you can.

We live at 8500 ft with a drive 1/3 mile long and a 15% incline that stays snow packed or ice covered for 4 to 6 months per year. The studded "winter force" tire is the only tires that make it up and down my frozen steep road consistently and safely. 6" of snow, or slush or glare ice, this is far better than Arctic Claw with studs. It makes the car like an all wheel drive for going up and like having chains for safety coming down! It is so amazing! just had to tell someone! Exceptional tire!
Superior treadlife
Outstanding performance

This tire is phenomenal!!!

For ultra high performance, summer only tires, the Michelin Pilot Sport is the best tire getting ~35k miles treadlife, aggressively driven on a BMW 330Ci convertible with M3 sport package, but it has a high price. However, for ultra high performance all season tires, this Continental ExtremeContact DWS is the BEST TIRE especially considering its price/performance value. I do not mean to say this is a value tire it is a huge value compared to the pricier Michelin. I have had two sets of four of Continental ExtremeContact DWS, 225/45ZR17 91W BSW on my 2001.5 VW Passat GLS, 2.8l, V-6 with custom Rage Coda 17 wheels. I got 45k miles and 47k miles on these two sets of four that were driven aggressively, and I had no tire repairs in the lifetime of any of these 8 tires. These ExtremeContact have been mainly driven as ultra high performance summer tires and driven year round in Central Texas, where we do get snow and ice on occasion in the winter months and where we get torrential rain downpours in short periods of time. They are exceptional on dry pavement, wet pavement and icy winter roads in the short winter months when an ultra high performance summer tire is like driving on a skate. These ExtremeContact exceed all expectations!

If you are looking for an all season tire that is also driven in hot summer months, this is the tire for you!

Lowering Your Ford Mustang

Thursday, January 5, 2012 by Logan Woodworth
The late model Ford Mustang is fast becoming an extremely popular vehicle for both customizers and enthusiasts. This is partly due to the volume of aftermarket parts available and the demand from consumers to set their Mustang apart from the crowd and show off their personal style.

In addition to custom paint jobs and aftermarket wheels (rims), many Mustang owners are opting to lower their cars for more aggressive handling and appearance. Due to the flexibility of the late model Mustang chassis, there are several ride height and stiffness options available.

Depending on the version of Mustang, there are several options for lowering from standard non-adjustable springs to fully adjustable coil-over kits. Coil-over kits offer the height and dampening adjustability that is not possible with a spring-only application.
Eibach Multi-Pro Coil-Over R2 Kit for 2011 Mustang GT
It's important to note that when changing a vehicle's ride height, alignment adjustments will be needed for your vehicle. For lowering, this typically includes reduction in camber to counter the camber increase caused by shorter springs. For the newer Mustang, a set of camber bolts will do the trick for the front and an adjustable panhard bar or trailing arm for the rear.

When you're looking for Mustang shocks, springs, coil-over kits or other suspension parts for your ride, be sure to shop by vehicle to find the parts that are a great fit.

Initial Review, 5000 Miles on Tires
May 12, 2011

Replaced Michelins that lasted only 17000 miles.

EXCEPT for the fact that initially these tires seemed not to balance, these tires ride very nicely, quiet and with loads of traction. It seems I get another 1-2 mpg out of these, but it could be the size of the tire.

BIGGEST PROBLEM is that 2 of the 4 (so far) turn out not to balance because they are actually DEFECTIVE according to the installer! He says it is not the balancing, but the fact that 2 of the 4 are not round and straight, they actually were wobbling on the wheel, creating a sensation of imbalance. He said to call Tire Rack which I did. The customer service gal talked to the installer while I was on the phone with her, arranged replacement tires to be sent to the installer, and the old ones returned, all in one call, all in one day! We'll see how this works now.

Late Model Corvette Tires

Wednesday, December 21, 2011 by Logan Woodworth
Upgrade GarageAs many Corvette owners know all too well, purchasing C5 and C6 tires can get a bit confusing and even frustrating. This is primarily due to the unusual staggering of the wheels. Unlike most vehicles with staggered (different front and rear sizes) tires, Chevrolet has been equipping Corvette wheels, since 1997, in the rear that aren't only wider, but also an inch larger in diameter than the front wheels.

Traction Control

This staggering makes it more difficult to find matching front and rear tires for the Vette. AdditiPirelli Winter 240 Sottozeroonally, using sizes that don't match the O.E. front and rear diameters will render the vehicle's traction control (Acceleration Slip Regulation) non-operational. This is because the car was engineered to have a tire that is one inch taller in the rear.

Winter / Snow Tires

To make matters worse, we have many customers looking for winter / snow tires for their Corvette and they're surprised to find that their options are extremely limited. The summer tires that are Original Equipment on the vehicle are nothing short of dangerous when driving on ice and in the snow. The lone winter option for the Corvette is the Pirelli Winter 240 Sottozero, which is only available in a non-run-flat front/rear match. The good news is that this is a good winter tire, however they can be hard to find in stock.

If you've decided that you want to make the move and install a set of winter / snow tires on your Corvette rims, then take a look at the Pirelli tire prices for the Winter 240 Sottozero and make this year's winter driving as safe as possible.
