What is Rim Offset and Backspacing? How Do They Affect Fitment?

Thursday, June 26, 2014 by Cy Chowattukunnel

Have you been told your Honda needs a high offset wheel or that your new Jeep wheels must have the right backspacing?

Many drivers are familiar with rim diameter, bolt pattern and centerbore, but not offset and backspacing.

Offset is the distance between the mounting pad and rim's midpoint. The diagram to the right shows a wheel with a positive offset. Every contemporary Original Equipment wheel has a positive offset, however O.E. offset varies. For example, my old Honda Prelude SH has 16x6.5 wide, 55mm offset wheels while a 2013 Jeep Wrangler Sport comes with 16x7 44 mm offset wheels.

What happens when you get a new wheel with a different offset?  A higher offset results in the wheel and tire moving more in (towards the hub). A lower offset causes the wheel and tire to move out (towards the fender).

What happens when you replace the 2013 Jeep Wrangler Sport's 16x7 44 mm offset wheels with the 17x8 6 mm offset MAMBA MR1X wheels? The 38 mm offset difference pushes the outside edge 38 mm out towards the fender and the additional width adds another 12.7 mm. Therefore, compared to Original Equipment, the outside edge is 50.7 mm further out towards the fender. Relative to the O.E. wheel, the MAMBA MR1X provides 25.3 mm additional inside clearance.

Backspacing is the distance between the mounting pad and the back of the wheel. Offset and wheel width will be marked on the back of the original and aftermarket wheels, but backspacing needs to be measured.

What does this all mean to you? Since we have already checked to see what fits your vehicle, all listed wheels have a compatible offset and backspacing specification. If you've lowered your car or you're running an oversized custom fit tire size, a higher offset wheel will allow for better fender clearance and a lower offset wheel will create additional inside clearance.

Shop by vehicle to view the wheels that are available for your application.

Went to a custom size to fit these on Redline rims. Luv these tires, got me thru another harsh winter (for Ohio) and lacking the time & $$ to invest in summer tires right now, as I've read previously here I will take them into the summer months & keep an eye on treadwear & performance. I have some twisty S-turn hilly roads in my commute & the Scorpions got me up & down those roads this winter with nary a slip. Can't wait to get these for my wife's car as well!

These are one of the BEST cold-weather tires & possibly all-season as well. Pirelli: Keep up the great work!

O.Z. Racing Tuner System Wheels

Tuesday, April 15, 2014 by Neal O'Neal

Spring is here and what better time than now to outfit your vehicle with a set of O.Z. Racing Tuner System wheels. In 2006, Tire Rack became the North American distributor for O.Z. Racing wheels. This partnership includes O.Z. Racing's prestigious, custom 3-piece wheel program -- O.Z. Racing Tuner System. This program helps expand fitment limitations normally found with one-piece wheels. Additional brake clearance and maximum outer lip depth are just some of the benefits this system provides. Applications are available for many of the world's most exotic cars including Aston Martin, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, Porsche, as well as a wide variety of luxury and performance cars.

How does the process work? O.Z. Racing Tuner System's 3-piece wheel components -- wheel center, inner rim section and outer rim section -- are produced in the same facility, with the same machinery and using the same technology as F1 race wheels. Rim diameters are available in 18", 19", 20" and 22" with inner rim widths of 5.5" to 9.5" and outer rim widths of 1" to 4" possible. Tire Rack's complete, in-house inventory of all 3-piece wheel components means quick turn-around with assembled wheels shipping within 1-2 days of order receipt.

Precise wheel assembly is performed at Tire Rack using an exacting process that maintains and enhances the structural integrity originally built into each individual wheel component. O.Z. Racing Tuner System supplies a proprietary fastener specific to its 3-piece wheels to ensure the highest level of structural integrity. These fasteners alone do not guarantee a properly assembled wheel and tightening. Thus, Tire Rack uses a factory-certified Ingersoll Rand DC Electric Fastening System to tighten O.Z. Racing Tuner System's proprietary fasteners.

The assembly torque of these critical fasteners is controlled and repeatable to less than 1/2%. Tire Rack's fastening system produces traceable measurements of torque to spec every time. In fact, wheels custom-assembled at Tire Rack are shipped with a computerized print out that shows in detail the settings used to assemble each wheel. Proper torque (fasteners tightened to spec so they won't break or loosen) and run-out (radial and lateral roundness for vibration-free rides) are recorded.

Once assembled, each O.Z. Racing Tuner System 3-piece wheel gets a unique serial number noted on a sticker placed on the inside of the wheel near the valve stem.

I went from having 18" Pirelli PZero Nero's to buying a 16" rim with these Kumho Sense tires and the difference couldn't have been greater. With the 18's road noise was almost unbearable. You almost couldn't carry on a conversation and the noise was even present at low speeds. Now the cabin is silent. With the 18's any amount of snow meant I was going nowhere. I would get stuck in a parking spot with less than an inch of snow. I almost couldn't turn and acceleration had to be done extremely slowly. Now wherever I point the steering wheel is where I go. I don't have to worry about sliding off the road or getting stuck in a parking spot. These kumho's have even improved my mpg. Before I was getting around 28-30mpg now I'm hitting high 30's. My only regret is waiting so long to downsize my rims. I also want to thank tirerack for the awesome service. I ordered my tire/rim combo on a Saturday and received them on Tuesday. They were shipped right to my door premounted and balanced. All I had to do was bolt them on. I checked with my local tireshop to see what it would cost for the same product and their quote was $200 more. I am definitely going to be doing business again with tirerack. You've just gained a customer for life.

Initial Review, 1,000 Miles on Tires
January 02, 2014

I have only had these tires a short time, but we got hit with about 8 inches of snow so far this storm. With OEM Continental All Season tires I was skating around in my Jetta Sportwagen in any amount of snow. After the first storm this season I ordered a set of the Altimax Arctic snow tires mounted on new rims. Boy am I glad I did, today's storm was a few inches of fresh powder that turned into hard pack during the morning rush hour. I was able to maintain grip on everything from the hard pack through the six inches of untouched snow in my driveway when I got home. I tested them out on the hill up my street and I was able to make it up without any trouble. I saw the video test for these tires here on tire rack where they put them up against 2 other brands and I am not disappointed in my choice.

I have run them for 2 weeks on cold but clear pavement and was pleased with the tire noise and feel. The road noise from the tires is no more than the OEM tires, likewise I have not had any reason to not be confident in the Altimax Arctic grip on dry surfaces. I no longer drive my cars "like I stole them" so I haven't come near finding the limits on these tires and I don't plan to. Really the only difference I feel with them is on a higher speed tighter curve, like a highway entrance/exit ramp. In that situation I can feel a slight rumble when the deep tread is under lateral stress.

If it wasn't for the holiday shipping crush, I would have had these mounted and balanced and on my doorstep the next day after ordering. The UPS driver was nice enough to disguise the stack of tires with my garbage can.

I am very happy with Tire Rack, their customer service and my new snow tires.

New Steel Wheels for Jeeps

Wednesday, November 6, 2013 by Steve Huffman

Since WWII, the Jeep has been an American off-road icon. In fact, it could possibly be the single most modified vehicle in the United States. Most Jeep owners want to customize their ride to their liking and needs. This almost always includes a new set of wheels. For years we have heard the demand for a basic black steel wheel. Best Nissan Murano Tires for All-Season and Snow Traction.

Wednesday, September 25, 2013 by Gary Stanley

My in-laws recently purchased a 2010 Nissan Murano SL. They were looking for a crossover SUV to use for traveling and daily driving and this vehicle fit the bill perfectly. While the Murano was in excellent condition, the tires were not. The tires' remaining tread depth measured at 4/32" in the rear and closer to 2/32" in the front. With winter fast approaching, this is not an acceptable tread depth for reliable snow traction that we need in this part of the country. We recommend a minimum tread depth of 6/32" to begin a winter season. Below this depth and the tire is reduced to "nibbling" at the snow rather than biting through it to find traction.

I prefer winter / snow tires for our area, especially due to the heavy lake effect snowstorms that frequent during the winter months. Winter tires, like the Bridgestone Blizzak DM-V1, have much better winter traction than an all-season option. You can view my experience with this tire on a crossover vehicle by reading "My Story on Winter Tires."

However, my in-laws only to want purchase a single set of tires to use year-round, so I needed to find them an all-season tire with especially good snow traction. Affordable tires with great ride quality, treadwear and wet traction were also high on their priority list. Rather than purchase aftermarket rims, these were to be installed on the factory aluminum alloy wheels. Based on their situation, I recommended three tires, the Continental CrossContact LX20 with EcoPlus Technology, Bridgestone Dueler H/L 422 Ecopia and Firestone Destination LE 2

Continental CrossContact LX20 with EcoPlus Technology
 Bridgestone Dueler H/L 422 Ecopia

 Firestone Destination LE 2
Firestone Destination
LE 2

Which tires did they choose? It would be hard to go wrong with any of these tires as they're all very highly ranked in our customer survey results. After looking over our data, customer reviews and tire tests, they chose the Continental Cross Contact LX20 with EcoPlus Technology for its winter traction and 70,000-mile treadwear warranty.

To see if your tires are appropriate for winter driving, read "Tread Depth - Why Too Little is Never Enough."

Kosei K4R Real World Reviews

Tuesday, July 9, 2013 by Ben Rooney

Kosei has a long history of building lightweight wheels at affordable prices. Their latest offering is the K4R. This 9-spoke wheel has been available for over a year, so we have been able to collect some real world feedback from customers who have put this wheel through its paces under demanding conditions. Below you will find quotes taken from customers about their experience with the Kosei K4R:

"I bought these for my fourth-generation Civic racer, as they are nearly half the weight of the wheel I had before. They are an excellent quality wheel and seemed to take the punishment of racing in their stride."

"The rim is a great value, very light and very easy to clean. I recommend these rims for anyone with 2008+ STI looking for a 17'' winter set-up."

"Fitment is great, as is improved handling - with the lighter unsprung weight (~4lbs. a corner) the car glides better over rougher surfaces and is more planted. Took it to MSR Houston roadcourse on 6/21 and had a blast...no issues whatsoever with the wheels on the track."

It's a tribute to the design and engineering expertise of Kosei that they can make a lightweight wheel that holds up both to the extremes of the race track and the punishment of winter weather. To accomplish this at a price that is highly affordable (range from $144 to $199 depending on size) is even more commendable. Wheel weight is between 11 and 16 lbs. depending on size and vehicle application.

The K4R is available in a limited number of fitments, so before you finalize your wheel buying decision, shop by vehicle to confirm if the K4R will fit your car.

Are Your Chrome Wheels Leaking? Replace Them with Affordable Custom Wheels

Friday, April 19, 2013 by Cy Chowattukunnel

Buy your vehicle and hold onto it for as long as possible. That's typically the best way to get the most out of your car and budget. Obviously, you'll need to maintain and take care of it as best you can.

If your vehicle originally came with chrome wheels and you live in snow country, one challenge you'll probably face is peeling chrome. Eventually this peeling chrome will prevent your wheels from properly sealing against the tire beads. One way of fixing this is by having an installer clean the wheel and use a bead sealant to reduce or eliminate the air loss.

If leaks persist to the point you're still adding air to your tires every morning, then it's time to replace your wheels. A great option to consider is a set of Sport Edition F7 wheels. This five-spoke wheel is available in both a 16" and 17" rim diameter. Sport Edition wheels combine quality, style and price to offer an exceptional value. Using the latest production standards, Sport Edition wheels complement the appearance of many popular vehicles.

Not only could new wheels fix your leaking problem, but your vehicle will look better, too!

Four of these tires with studs makes a front-wheel drive car a brilliant performer on ice!

We live on a gentle hill that became slick as snot after freezing rain last week. It was so slick that it was perilous to walk down the sidewalk. But with their studs, these tires did great -- going down the hill our Mazda 3 never lost any traction. Even when I tried stepping hard on the brake, these studded tires did not slip even a little.

Besides ice, we've driven on a couple of inches of snow and with a set of four we had no problem in our front-wheel drive Mazda 3.

I bought these from TireRack, who also installed the studs and mounted them on rims. What we received from TireRack was ready to mount on the car, which we did at a cost of $25 at the local tire shop at the beginning of the snowy season. This was a good customer experience.

Updates To Our Recommended Installer Page Help You Find Your Ideal Installer

Thursday, February 7, 2013 by Ben Rooney

Our database of Recommended Installers is always improving. We recently got all of our listed installers signed up for our Price Pledge program, to make sure everyone is able to fairly compare installation costs between different shops. Installers who participate in the Price Pledge program agree to display exact quotes for installation services based on tire aspect ratio. That's the middle number of your tire size. To learn more about a tire's aspect ratio, read "Tire Size Guide." Additional or optional related installation fees are also displayed. These services may include valve stems, disposal of old tires and service of TPMS sensors.

We have also recently added a map feature to our web search, so that you can easily see which locations are most convenient. This is especially helpful if the shop has an address that is not on a well-known street. As always, we accept customer reviews regarding your experience at the installers we work with. Reviews are averaged on a scale of 1 to 5 stars. Shops that maintain an average of at least 4.5 stars out of 5 are highlighted as Price Pledge Plus installers. These are listed at the top of the search results for their local area. But first, all Recommended Installers must meet our uncompromising criteria:

  1. Use proper mounting and balancing equipment including touchless or rim clamp, European-style tire changers and high-speed computer spin balancers.
  2. Employ properly trained technicians capable of safely performing damage-free installations.
  3. Be an automotive business that can offer additional services to customers (alignments, complete repairs, auto detailing, etc.)
  4. Possess a positive attitude and the ability to treat Tire Rack's customers with the highest level of professional courtesy.

Great comfort, very low noise, great traction & good economics. Beginning third season with ample tread. I have an undersized tread width application for better traction as recommended by Tire Rack, and maintain higher tire pressures (34-35 lb/in2) for good freeway stability. I chose this tire because it's bi-directional like the no longer available Blizzak WS-50 and can be rotated from side to side, with out reversals on the rim. I found that living 3 years with directional WS60 tires to be expensive and rough on the custom wheel finish for required rotations and re-balancing. I hope that Dunlop and Tire Rack will continue to provide this tread style.

Lightweight, Strong and Good Looking: Enkei Racing Series PF01

Wednesday, November 28, 2012 by Marshall Wisler

Selecting wheels for a vehicle is subjective based upon one's taste and ultimately up to each individual customer. Here at Tire Rack, we offer many different brands to suit the various tastes of our customers.

While I'm frequently asked, "What wheel would look best on my car?", I must admit it's a very difficult question to answer. Even though I've been customizing cars for years and certainly have my thoughts as to how things should be done, my feelings don't always match that of the consumer.

When I do weigh in, I try to recommend wheels that aren't overstated, of good quality and are as purposeful as possible. For customers looking for a wheel that is durable, good looking and extremely lightweight, one of my favorite choices is Enkei's PF01

Part of the Enkei Racing Series family, this product weighs as little as 10 lbs. in certain sizes and maintains a much lower price point than other high-end wheel manufacturers. The broad range of bolt patterns and sizing of this wheel allows it to be used on a wide variety of vehicles.

The 4x100 bolt pattern is a popular choice for Honda and Mazda Miata owners, while the 5x114 option has proven to be very popular on countless other makes and models. Besides the physical allure of this wheel, it's proven quite handy when trying to clear Big Brake Kits due to its large amount of spoke clearance.

When considering aftermarket wheels or aftermarket rims as they are commonly called, take a look at many of the various wheels from Enkei. With many wheels to chose from, your tastes doesn't have to exactly mirror my own.

I would have expected to pay twice as much for the quality of this tire. The ride is great and is so queit. Cornering is incredible. Took my car and made it feel like a sports car. I am alittle agresive around corners and feel very confedent that these tires will hug the corner. The rim protector on the tire has come in handy several times and save my rim from curbs. Snow traction has yet to be tested. Over all very pleased with this tire and recomend it to any of my customers wanting a luxury touring tire.

I've had 5 different sets of tires on this car and these Conti's are, so far, the best. I drive through all weather conditions through/over mountains to&from work 125 miles daily. Although these are relatively new tires, they have outperformed all of the previous brands. Smooth ride, stable feel, security in driving rain storms and controlled handling. My Camry has been lowered and I am running 18" custom rims which would usually provide me with a stiffer ride, but I don't feel it with these tires. I have run these tires with the windows up and down and don't hear them at all. I will buy these tires again without a second thought if they prove out this year!

Tire Rack Locations and Recommended Installers

Wednesday, October 17, 2012 by Gary Stanley

As you may know, Tire Rack is a mail order company, so we don't have traditional local retail locations where you can shop for our products. However, we do have a handful of distribution centers across the country where we ship our products from, and you can also pick up your order in person.

Orders can be picked up at the following distribution centers:

Note: With the exception of our South Bend, Indiana facility, our distribution centers do not offer installation. Local sales taxes do apply to any purchase that is picked up. Also, the credit card holder must be present at time of pick up along with a photo ID.

Do you live in an area that's not near one of our distribution centers? No problem. We have a list of nationwide Recommended Installers that can provide professional and affordable installation of the tires, wheels and other products you purchase from Tire Rack. All of our Installers are carefully screened to ensure they have the right equipment and experience to satisfactorily serve our customers. In fact, to become a Recommended Installer a company must meet our uncompromising criteria:

You can see exact quotes for installation by choosing a Price Pledge Installer while in search results. Price Pledge Plus Recommended Installers not only participate in our Price Pledge program but they are also Installers who consistently achieve a 4.5-star or above overall ranking in our survey results. Installers who participate in the Price Pledge program agree to display exact quotes for installation services based on tire aspect ratio. Additional or optional related installation fees are also displayed.
