Why Doesn't My Car Come with a Spare Tire?

Wednesday, July 30, 2014 by Marshall Wisler

Is the spare tire becoming extinct? With a growing number of vehicles in the United States being sold without one, it could appear that way. In fact, many drivers are unaware they may not have one until they need one.

New cars, trucks and SUVs seldom come with a spare tire, wheel and jack kit due to an increasing demand for fuel economy and storage space. While all of these attributes are positives, they may not be at the forefront of your mind as you lay stranded on the side of the road. Despite not having a spare tire, there are ways to make sure you are prepared.

Many automakers include roadside assistance with the purchase of their vehicles. It's a good idea to program this number into your phone or be sure to keep a copy of the vehicle's reference guide handy (a smaller version of the owner's manual).

Drivers can fix punctures from small nails or screws using a tire inflation kit. We sell the Continental ContiComfortKit that injects a water-soluble sealant into the tire along with compressed air to re-inflate. This unit is simple to use and operates with the vehicle's 12V accessory power source.

The kit makes it possible for you to complete your drive home, to work, an important appointment or a tire repair facility. It also helps you get back on the road quickly, as most passenger car tires that are flat will take less than seven minutes to fill.

Purchase your own spare tire and wheel combo. Dealers often sell donut spare wheels and tires through the parts department. In the event they do not, you can purchase a full size wheel and tire to keep in the trunk. Please note that full size wheels and tires may not fit into the trunk storage compartment beneath the trunk carpeting. You'll also need to make sure you have a jack and lug wrench handy.

Initial Review, 25,000 Miles on Tires
February 16, 2014

Car came with Dunlop tires. I cannot believe Lexus put those tires on this car. I got rid of them at 25K. I have a 2000 LX 470 and have always been happy with the LTX M/S. These tires are even better. There is nothing bad about this tire. Bought at Tire Rack. Had dealer mount 'em. Better everything: handling, ride, traction and even gas mileage. I hunt, so in addition to city/highway, I do cornfields, creeks and every other type of off-road driving that can be found in the Midwest. The only thing that keeps me from buying a Range Rover Sport is that I cannot find these tires for that truck. I still have my LX 470 and still use the LTX M/S on that truck (it has 287K). I'm not necessarily a Michelin freak. My wife has a Lexus RX and I'm putting Continentals on that. But for the larger SUVs, the LTX M/S is fantastic tire. I like the M/S 2 better than the M/S, but they don't make it for the '00 LX470. When my friends are stuck in their Range Rovers, I'm going strong, mainly because of the traction these tires afford. On the highway, rain, snow, and sun, the tires handle well and are quiet. I'm 63 and have driven a car/truck farther in reverse than most have driven in forward. These tires are simply the best. If they make 'em to fit your vehicle, buy them. You will thank me. I promise. And I don't work for Michelin or anybody else in any auto related industry.

I knew our winter tires were due for replacement and intended to shop around on Tire Rack. We had the Prius in for service at our Toyota dealer when they called me and noted we were down to the wear indicators on our Continental Conti Winter Contact tires. (The Contis had been a good winter tire and I would still consider them) I agreed to have them put on these all season Kumhos. What a mistake. After 27000 miles these tires are shot. Down to the wear indicators. I've just ordered new Pirelli P7 Plus from Tire Rack. No more Kumhos for me.

Beware! These General G-Max AS-03 tires have very weak sidewalls that rupture easily! I have a set of these tires that are only four months old with 3000 miles on them. I was turning into a parking lot and bumped the curb with my right rear tire. I parked my car and went to inspect the tire expecting to see curb rash. What I found was a flat tire with a punctured sidewall. The impact with the curb was minor and at low speed. I have been driving for 30 years and have bumped curbs in the past but have NEVER had a tire rupture from it. My tire dealer covered 2/3 the cost of a replacement under their road hazard warranty. However, I was very displeased that I had to spend any money to replace a tire that should not have failed. I contacted Continental Tire (they own General Tire) and asked them to cover my cost of the replacement tire. They simply told me that they don't a provide a road hazard warranty on their tires and refused to do anything about it.

Had problem with balancing and noise from first installation. Had tire re-balanced after 50 miles.Still have vibration and excessive road noise. Brought vehicle to the dealer thinking I had a drive train noise problem. While on lift with tires spinning all 4 tires showed out of round condition of tread. Very poor quality from factory.

These tires were on my 2012 Durango when I bought it. Unfortunately, I did not take it out on actual highway speeds when I test drove. When I eventually did make it out on the highway, I noticed a vibration above 55mph. The dealer said that two of the tires had shifted belts, whatever that means. These are the first Continental tires I have ever had on a vehicle in 53 years of driving, and will never, ever get a Continental tire again.

I have had this tire for about 2 months on my 08 MB E350 4 MATIC and the car drives better than new. Great traction on the autobahn, performed very well in the Alps last weekend. This tire is very quiet, stops well, great handeling, and as stated, it makes my car drive as if i just picked it up from the dealer barnd new. I highly recommend this tire. ADM

I just had these tires installed, so far they are great. I haven't really had a chance to push the limits on them since, its still around 40 degrees and its a summer tire. The road noise is minimal, i would say the are just as quiet at the OEM Continental tires. They do have very stiff sidewalls which is nice, when it comes to steering input. If these tires keep up on how good they are doing, ill be mad i didn't purchase another set since they discounted them. If your still able to pick up a set from a tire dealer i would recommended getting them. Tire rack sent these to my door for $300, and i only had to pay $85 for mounting and balancing.

I don't know why so many manufacturers including Mercedes use this particular tire. These were expensive, noisy when new, badly cupped near the end of their life, and were bald as a ping pong ball at 25,000 miles, well short of the claimed treadlife. I drive about 25,000 interstate miles a year for work, so I thought I would at least get the claimed 40,000 miles. I had my dealer check the car out (still under warranty) to make sure the car wasn't causing any of these issues and they assured me it was these tires. They also couldn't believe I got more than about 20,000 miles out of them, which is the tread life they usually see.

Tires gave me a lot of problems from day 1 when I bought the car. There was impossible to drive this car on highways with speeds 70 mph and up ** 350 miles on it , these tires were putting my Durango in so much vibrations that I had a feeling that car is going to faul apart ** dealer could not replaced them for any other brand so he was just trying balanced them. After balancing all set 5 times ( 3000 miles on tires) let say he finally did it I decided to keep them on but I am not driving faster then 80mph on highways. Overall it is decent tire , good handling and braking in 6" of snow, good wet traction, good dry traction. Over 25000 miles on this set and lots of tread left but I am sorry Goodyear I can not wait to switch to Michelins or Continentals.

They were installed brand new when I purchased from dealer. Alignment was performed and tires were rotated three times so far. Thought I could get at least 40,000 miles, was very disappointed to find it's not going to make 22,000 as the outer thread is completely gone.

Only about 1K miles so far but very impressed. Took delivery of new 335i coupe w/M package and took off OEM RFTs before even leaving the dealer and put the Conti Extremes on. Extremely compliant without losing responsiveness. Ability to handle impact harshness is outstanding. Road noise is surprisingly very low for a high performance tire. Drove in downpour and tires were very stable and communicative. Time will tell in terms of how well these tires wear, but so far, I am extremely happy and would highly recommend.
