A Little Twisted: PowerAid Throttle Body Spacer

Friday, August 19, 2011 by Jonas Paeplow
I have an older Chevy Suburban that I use to haul kids and camping gear and it's often used for towing as well. It has a high mileage 5.7L V8 engine that runs well, as I keep it tuned and well maintained, but carrying heavy loads and towing can put a real strain on any powertrain.

Like any other car enthusiast, I'm always looking for a little more power in the vehicles I drive. I had previously installed a performance exhaust system and an AIRAID Intake System to improve the breathing efficiency of my engine. The acceleration and fuel economy at highway speeds both improved, but I was still looking for a little more torque just
off idle, without having to make major changes such as a performance camshaft or an updated fuel injection system. What I found was the PowerAid Throttle Body Spacer.

PowerAid Throttle Body SpacerThe PowerAid Throttle Body Spacer was developed to enhance your engine’s off idle to mid-range performance and efficiency. The unique “Helix Bore” design of the PowerAid creates a spinning action of the incoming air. On a throttle body fuel injection system, such as mine, the spacer assists in homogenizing the atomized fuel with the incoming airflow improving the mixture and velocity of the air fuel charge all the way into the combustion chamber. The benefits you will see are measurable torque gains between 800 to 2500 RPM, and an increase in your fuel economy, depending on driving conditions.

On a port fuel injected engine, much the same happens, but speeding up the airflow forces the fuel spray into the cylinder more efficiently just upstream of the intake valve. The end result is an air/fuel mixture almost as efficient as the newest direct injection systems.

There are several cheaper products on the market that claim to improve performance but they are typically installed upstream of the throttle plates. This can interfere with airflow through the MAF (Mass Airflow Sensor) which in turn can confuse the sensor, reducing performance and fuel economy.

PowerAid Throttle Body Spacers
are manufactured from high quality aircraft grade aluminum
billet. Each spacer is specifically designed for your application. The kits include the necessary gaskets, hardware and precision brackets to maintain proper geometry with the factory components. I was able to install the PowerAid Spacer in less than an hour using normal hand tools. There was no drilling, cutting or major modification to existing parts necessary. I also like the fact that PowerAid Throttle Body Spacers carry a lifetime warranty.

In a nutshell, here are the benefits you'll get using this spacer:
  • Improves throttle response
  • Made from anodized aircraft billet aluminum to last
  • Easy bolt-on installation
  • Improves fuel efficiency
  • Increases engine torque between 800 to 2500 RPM
Take an hour to get a little twisted. You will notice the difference.
