Which Wheels are Best for Winter Use?

Wednesday, September 11, 2013 by Gary Stanley

Many drivers seek plain black steel wheels (also called steel rims) for winter use due to their low cost and durability. In many cases, steel wheels aren't available for a vehicle due to brake caliper clearance or another reason, and therefore an aluminum alloy wheel must be used instead. For a comparison between the two options, read "Steel Rims vs. Alloy Wheels for Winter Use."

While many aftermarket wheels work quite well for winter use, not all wheel finishes and sizes are appropriate or ideal for driving on snow-covered roads. Here are some examples of finishes and/or fitments that you should try to avoid if possible:

  • Lower offset wheels that will stick out. Wheel and tire combinations that stick out will throw more snow, ice, sand and other debris up against the side of the vehicle. Some aftermarket rims can stick out too far and cause this problem. When possible, try to be more conservative by selecting wheels with higher offsets to keep the wheel and tire set-up within the vehicle's fender wells.
  • Polished and chrome wheels. These types of wheel (including those with chromed lips) finishes either have no protective clearcoat or a very light clearcoat and aren't going to hold up well for winter use. The salt, ice melt chemicals and sand used on winter roads will quickly destroy the finish on these wheels.
  • Some wheels with machined faces and lips with thin, sprayed, clearcoats. Just like fully polished and chrome wheels, these types are vulnerable to salt, ice melt chemicals and sand. It's best to keep them away from these to maintain a good looking wheel finish. Remember, not all clearcoat finishes are the same.

Are you not sure which wheel to choose? Don't worry, we work closely with wheel manufactures to assure the finish of the wheels we have listed with our Winter / Snow Tire & Wheel Packages can hold up in harsh winter environments. When you shop for wheels on our site, the wheels and sizes listed are pre-filtered to avoid possible finish problems, as well as fitment issues. You can rest assured that the wheels you purchase will be great for winter use and will go well with your winter / snow tires!

Are Your Chrome Wheels Leaking? Replace Them with Affordable Custom Wheels

Friday, April 19, 2013 by Cy Chowattukunnel

Buy your vehicle and hold onto it for as long as possible. That's typically the best way to get the most out of your car and budget. Obviously, you'll need to maintain and take care of it as best you can.

If your vehicle originally came with chrome wheels and you live in snow country, one challenge you'll probably face is peeling chrome. Eventually this peeling chrome will prevent your wheels from properly sealing against the tire beads. One way of fixing this is by having an installer clean the wheel and use a bead sealant to reduce or eliminate the air loss.

If leaks persist to the point you're still adding air to your tires every morning, then it's time to replace your wheels. A great option to consider is a set of Sport Edition F7 wheels. This five-spoke wheel is available in both a 16" and 17" rim diameter. Sport Edition wheels combine quality, style and price to offer an exceptional value. Using the latest production standards, Sport Edition wheels complement the appearance of many popular vehicles.

Not only could new wheels fix your leaking problem, but your vehicle will look better, too!

New Wheel for Spring 2013: Verde Parallax

Wednesday, January 23, 2013 by Ben Rooney

The Verde Parallax has been added to our lineup of aftermarket wheels for 2013. This wheel has an attractive, clean five-spoke design, with each spoke divided into two parallel spokes. All Verde Parallax wheels feature a machined face with black accents. The machined spokes are highlighted against the black background, making them the visual focus of the design.

Verde, established in 1981, has committed itself to excellence throughout the production process, from research and design through final production. This dedication has resulted in both ISO/TS16949 certification and recognition internationally via certification by the International Standards Organization. Their factory was built in 2002 as a fully integrated production line with R & D, tooling, casting, CNC machining, polishing, chrome plating, painting, packaging and warehouse logistics capabilities.

While this wheel is listed as new for the spring of 2013, there are already a few in stock. Pricing for the Parallax currently ranges between the $170 to $200*. The wheel is available in rim diameters of 19" and 20". You can shop by vehicle to view the offerings available for your car.

These tires are excellent. The OEM BF Goodrich were horrible. I then went to a set of Fusion's which looked really great with the flame sidewall and rode and handled ok. These tires are great. The ride is much better, quiter and softer but responsive. They handle well in the rain also. I have them blackwall out since my truck is black and chrome. I also went bigger than the OEM rims. The taller height and width still are handled well witht this tire. I run dedicated snows in the winter on the OEM rims so I have no snow comments. As far as better gas mileage, come on let's be honest. I have a 6000 lb pickup, my mileage is what it is. But these tires are worth the price and you will enjoy them. A definite rebuy.

Wheel Spotlight: KMC XD Series Rockstar

Wednesday, February 8, 2012 by Ben Rooney
KMC XD Series RockstarThe Rockstar has been one of the most popular wheels in the KMC XD Series lineup. Its classic five-spoke design combines with a deeply concave face and unique 'floating' center cap for a look that is both distinctive and aggressive. Having seen these wheels on trucks in our parking lot, I can definitely say they stand out.

Available to fit a wide variety of trucks and SUVs, the wheel's wide widths and negative offsets are available to accommodate many lifted applications with oversized tires. It is available in diameters up to 24" and widths as wide as 12". Not all widths and diameters will be available for every vehicle application, but there are a broad range of fitments from which to choose.

The wheel also comes in a version for dually pickups. Read a prior blog post of mine for details on custom wheels for dually trucks, as well as a photo of the Rockstar in the dually version. That version has a somewhat different appearance due to unique fitment requirements.

Besides the black painted version shown above, the Rockstar is also available in a chrome and machined with black accent finish. As with any of our wheels, you can shop by vehicle to see which truck rims are available to fit your application.

Wheel Clearance Event: Bright PVD Bremmer Kraft BR05

Monday, February 6, 2012 by Cy Chowattukunnel

Have you been checking out our Wheel Clearance Event?

One unique finish that may have caught your eye is the bright PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) finish on the Bremmer Kraft BR05. Physical Vapor Deposition is when the manufacturer electrostatically applies an ionized vapor to the alloy surface in a closed chamber. The process creates a finish that's bright but a little more resistant to weather and corrosion compared to traditional chrome rims. The photo below shows how the BR05 (on the right) compares to a popular chrome wheel from Von Max, the VM2.

Tire Rack

Although every driver has his or her own preference, I like the look of the BR05 on white, black, silver and grey vehicles. The mesh styling will also work with many different applications, including the staggered 19" sizes available for the 2009 (E60 chassis) BMW 528i Sedan.

A set of 19x8 20mm offset front wheels and 19x9 20mm offset rear wheels combined with the versatile Ultra High Performance All-Season General G-MAX AS-03 in 245/35-19 and 275/30-19 is only $1480* plus shipping. The front wheels have been marked down from $235 to $149, while the rear wheels are currently $89.

FAQ:

  1. I want to be able to rotate my tires, can I run either the 19x8 20mm offset or the 19x9 20mm offset option on the front and back? If so, what tire size should I run? Either wheel will work in both positions with a 245/35-19 tire. When you select the 245/35-19 size and the 19x9 wheel, you'll have less rubber protruding beyond the edge of the rim making it easier to scrape the outside of the wheel.

  2. Will the Bremmer Kraft BR05 accept my original BMW center cap? Yes, or you can purchase additional O.E. caps for $15 with your order.

Considering chrome rims?

Monday, April 12, 2010 by Tire Rack Team
Chrome rims certainly do make an impression. They're shiny, and have a reputation for making a stylish statement. We put Avarus AV4 chrome wheels on the Lincoln at right, and they're just one of many chrome options we have at Tire Rack.

One thing to think about with chrome wheels, and actually any aftermarket wheels, is the need for wheel-specific cleaning supplies. Purchasing aftermarket wheels can be an investment, and just like any other type of investment, you'll want to protect your assets by cleaning them correctly.

Search our entire inventory of wheels to find chrome options that are right for your vehicle. (This could, quite possibly, be our best inventory of aftermarket wheels to date! Tons of new options!)
