Initial Review, 8,000 Miles on Tires
December 25, 2012

Bought these tires 3 winters ago for winter use (as part of a package with rims from Tirerack.com) for our 2010 Camaro LT2 RS as an alternate to the stock Pirelli summer tires. They handle well in the dry, good cornering, stopping and accel. They've worn very well considering they have seen mostly dry conditions (NY-Long Island area). In the limited snow use they do well and I think it would take going over a mound of snow that would be higher than the clearance hight to strand you. I noticed when I first bought them they were used as the winter tires on the Nassau County police cars. Bottom line, I would recommend them. NOTE: Make when you buy a winter tire/rim package that you state whether your Camaro is 6 or 8 cylinder because the Brembo calipers on the 8 cylinder may require a different wheel.

Hurst Gives Your New Mustang or Camaro That Old School Look with the Shaker

Friday, December 28, 2012 by Doc Horvath

Ever since Detroit restarted the muscle car war with the new Camaro and Mustang, many people have looked to give these vehicles a retro look with classic five-spoke wheels. In an effort to mix old school looks with modern finishes, Hurst has introduced the Shaker in 20" staggered width fitments for both vehicles. The wheel is also a fit for the following applications:

  • Pontiac G8
  • Chrysler 300
  • Dodge Charger
  • Dodge Magnum
Hurst Shaker
Hurst Shaker

Hurst Shaker

Shaker wheels retain the classic five-spoke design with an innovative design that allows the owner to use either black or gold inserts in the center of the spokes to personalize the application. The inner barrel and sides of the spokes are painted black and clearcoated to hide brake dust, while the edges of the spokes are machined to expose brushed aluminum underneath for contrast. Available in both 20x8.5 and 20x10 sizes, the Shaker wheel is perfect for either a square set-up with the 8.5" wide wheel on all four corners or a mix of the two widths to put the wider tires and wheels on the back axle only.

No snow last year and just had the first snow this year. These tires were awesome! I moved and now live on a gradual hill. The perelli tires would have spun and I would be stuck. The g-max tires gripped through the snow with no issues. I no longer fear the snow!
Rain traction is great too. Dry traction is fine but there is a slight sidewall flex. I actually like this over perelli's stiffness.

this is the most comfortable tire i have yet to run in a 18. has a level of comfort and still lets you feel like your in a sports car without cringing every time you hit a bump. holds the car out of the hole and exceeded my expectations in the corners. was running hankooks before and the ride quality suffers too much. normally with the t/a's i have always ran them on a 15in wheel was curious to see them on this car and ended up being pleased with them. it may not be the zenith of performance tires but you get a lot more tire than you pay for.

I have about 2500 miles on a full set. Dry and warm roads traction is not the best as these are winter tires. I did roll on about 300 miles in a 3 to 5 inch wet sloppy ice and snow mixture and I am impressed. From a dead stop the tires can break loose easily, however feather the throttle and you have great traction. There is no 'slush steering' the car tracks straight and true. I am able to stop and proceed on hills and felt very stable at highway speeds. The Camaro will never be confused with my 4X4 but these tires are quite and provide a great deal of confidence. As I have to run the SS this winter this is a purchase I'm glad I made.

These Generals are just so much better than the Factory summer Pirelli's! The Pirelli tires were completely shot at about 20,000 miles - these General tires have over 17,000 miles on them and the treadwear is insignificant. These tires are perfect for my Camaro - they handle well and provide excellent wet & dry traction. I would DEFINITELY recommend these tires.

I had a set of KDWS on the car before and enjoyed the all season performance, ran them until they were bald. When I bolted on these tires, ( and I got the optional rear 275/40R17 and new wheels) I was amazed at the grip in the dry. My car is Glued or Magnetized stuck to the road! I don't drive the car in the rain much but got caught in a wet road condition one day. I saw other cars sliding around and am sure I would have been too on a different tire, these tires still felt amazingly stuck to the road! I am always testing the limits of these tires and have not been disappointed yet. The only thing I would say- and it doesn't bother me at all, they are noisey - er than some tires would be. You feel the road with these and hear different pavements too. I think it enhances the driving experience rather than detracts, they are a responsive tire. If you want amazing grip - GET THESE!

All-Season Options When Replacing Your Camaro's Summer Tires

Thursday, November 1, 2012 by Steve Huffman

The muscle car lives and the new Camaro is proof. Since 2010, these pony cars have been prowling the streets of America and can be seen almost anywhere. By now, the time to start looking at replacing the tires for many has come. If your Camaro came equipped with 20s, they came stock with the Pirelli P Zero. While this is a fantastic Max Performance Summer tire, it's not designed as a long-lasting option that can provide cold weather traction. Granted, most Camaro owners aren't going to be using the vehicle in the snow, but there might be some drivers looking for traction when the temperature drops below 40 degrees. And more than a few owners looking to get a tire that will last longer than the Original Equipment.

Compared to when the car was introduced, today there are a few all-season options for the new Camaro. Included in these options are the Continental ExtremeContact DWS, Firestone Firehawk Wide Oval AS (W-Speed Rated) and General G-MAX AS-03. According to our Tire Survey Results, the ExtremeContact DWS is the best performer in light snow conditions. It also has the highest treadwear rating.

If you're looking for an excellent value option, take a look at the Firestone tire. It molds an all-season rubber compound into a symmetric tread design that blends dry road handling with wet, wintertime traction. Its internal structure includes twin steel belts reinforced by spirally wrapped nylon, along with a carcass reinforced by a hard sidewall filler between polyester cord plies to help resist distortion at high speeds and while cornering.

The General G-MAX AS-03 is currently ranked third in our survey as customers like its treadwear, wet traction and hydroplaning resistance. Three-dimensional sipes increase the number of snow-biting edges to aid wintertime traction, as well as lock together to enhance dry and wet handling. I also think the tire looks pretty cool, too!

I've had these tire on for about 25k and they almost look new still. They are not the best tires on the market, but they are not the most expensive either. I'm sure there are better tires out there but not for the price. I had Firestone's on before these and they were ok on dry pavement, but lousy on wet. These Kumho's stick like glue on dry corners, and are pretty good in the wet. When they do break loose, they are very predictable. I wouldn't hesitate to put another set on when these wear out.

I purchased these tires at the begining of summer to mount on a set of factory '12 camaro 20" wheels. The look, feel, and stance of my car was all changed for the better and couldnt be happier. Wet performance is excellent as these tires assure a firm feel for the road at 85mph in the rain. Dry performance is no slouch either. I drive agressively and this tire takes all the input I give it. The heavier wheel hurt my braking performance but bringing 4000+ lbs of 4dr sedan to a halt quickly is within this tires capability. No noticeable uneven/unusual wear so far. I have not tested in the snow but my Blizzaks on factory 19's will go back on for winter duty. I will buy General Tires again. For the money, these tires are hard to beat.

Bought this tire after the bridgeatones I had on previously were discontinued. These tires match up every way with those bridgestones (re960) except for hydroplaning resistance. These tries do tend to be more effected by large puddles of water, but they are still good at resisting hydroplaning. These tires are better with regaurd to dry traction (lower treadwear rating) and just as capable if not better on a wet road than my previous re960. The ride comfort being better I would atribute to the 60% sidewall as compared to the 55% of the re960. Overall a very good tire...I am very happy with my selection.

Follow-Up Review, 34103 Miles on Tires
January 20, 2014

I am very happy with how these tires and holding up. They are wearing evenly and slowly I would not have expected to get the kind if mileage I'm going to end up getting out of them, I would guess 60,000-70,000 by the time I get to the wear bar and on a soft compound...this is just amazing.

Theses PS2 tires are excellent. They are the Michael Phelps of max performance tires. Great performance in all areas. The first thing I noticed was the extreme ride quality and low road noice like a well rounded quality wine. Balence! My RX-8 handles more precisly.Diver confidence more improved than before. Every tire may perform slightly different on different cars but this performance report I'm giving is very true when placed on a stock 6-speed rx-8. 225/40/18 are the ones I used. Very low unsprung weight.Excellent in the rain too. Tight and planted to the road. Acceleration feels improved as well. The ratings on tire rack do reflect the real world performance when placed on the rx-8. The only thing I disagree with is the tire treadwear ratings. My ps2 tires have 33,000 miles on all four and had mazda's mechanic measure their remaining tread depth. The lowest tire depth is a 4 mm, two more at 5 mm,and one at 6 mm a 10 mm means new tire. What this means is I still have about 30 % or 1/3 tire life left, even after having 33,000 miles on them. Amazing! They could last as long as 40,000 milesor a total of three years. This is because the rx-8 has a good balance suspension 50/50 weight distribution, low cg. and lower torque than other sports cars 161 pounds at best. If it were a mustang, camaro etc. we are talking more than twice the torque which wears down the tread faster. They are heavier too. less weight helps. So if you drive a car simular to in size weight torque amount say like a scion FR-S / RX-8 get these these are a steel. They last long, for champaign quality performance in all of tire rack's rating areas. I just bought the PSS which I understand, in theory, they perform even better in all areas. Will send an honest, true report about them soon. Stay tooned! lol!

OEM for the 5th Gen Camaro SS. This is a very sticky tire. Great traction. Great wear as long as you keep the tires going the same speed as the car. ;) I had ~40,000 miles on the rears with 3/32" tread left, and wanted to try something else, so I bought a pair of General AS-03s. What a mistake! They wandered all over the place, requiring almost constant steering correction. They also broke loose in the corners AT POSTED SPEED. The Pirellis are great. Predictable, safe, reasonably quiet. Cornering is excellent, even at 15-20MPH over the posted speed on a outward-sloping on ramp. A wonderful tire to have if you need to stop NOW! They just squat and STOP! I'm sticking with Pirellis.

I have a 2011 Charger R/T with the road and track package and super track package. It came from the factory with Goodyear F1 Supercar tires which I got 22000 miles out of, not bad. I switched to Falken Azenzis, they were absolutely horrible. Squirmy ride, road noise and couldn't balance them or get them to align properly. Probably built on a Monday or Friday and they had too much Saki to drink when they made them. I switched to the Pirelli P Zero and it's like day an night. I absolutely love them. Much better than the F1s. I'm not expecting 50000 miles out of them, but what ever I get will be very enjoyable miles. Interesting that all the Camaro reviews of this tire are fairly positive and they get good mileage out of the Pirellis. I will keep you posted on the wear I get. No more Asian tires for me and I'm never shopping price again. You get what you pay for. I originally wanted Michelin Primacys but they are always on national back order in this size. Lucky for me! I've alway been a Michelin or Pirelli man. If I get decent miles out of these I will be putting them on my Challenger also. Extremely satisfied!

Which Street Legal Drag Radial Racing Tires to Buy

Tuesday, August 7, 2012 by Gary Stanley

Do you have a high-powered Chevy Camaro, Ford Mustang or modified car that you want to take to the drag strip? If so, you might be interested in a tire that is designed to be driven on the street, as well as at your event.

Drag racing radials have softer sidewalls and tread compounds in order to maximize grip in straight-line acceleration that's typical when launching a car from a stop at a drag racing strip.

BFGoodrich g-Force T/A Drag Radial 2

BFGoodrich's popular g-Force T/A Drag Radial is available in a variety of sizes and comes in two tread patterns depending on the size. The classic tread pattern is known as the T/A Drag Radial 2 while the more modern tread pattern is simply called the g-Force T/A Drag Radial. Toyo's Proxes TQ (which stands for "Top Qualifier") is available in more limited sizes and one tread pattern.

Note that while drag racing radials are street legal, the soft sidewalls they feature often result in reduced cornering grip and stability in street driving.

Shop by size or by vehicle to see which models are available for your application.

This is my second set of F1s, and they are going to need replacing in the next 6-9 months. I've been doing hill driving for autocross practice, autocross, drag racing and some highway driving to and from events, and they've performed really well for a street tire. In autocross I won my division on this tire in pouring rain and hail. At the drag strip the car hooks up almost as well as with drag radials in these tires. I would definitely get them again, except I just saw the price increase... on 2/20/10 I paid $233 per tire, and now they're $326, a WHOPPING 40% INCREASE in 2 1/2 YEARS!! That sort of price increase is way too much, and I don't know if the tire fund can handle it. Goodyear may have lost a customer on this one.
