Initial Review, 39,000 Miles on Tires
April 10, 2014

I replaced the OEM tires with these DWS Extreme. First week, I hated it. The ride and handling doesn't seem right. It turns out I need to have qualified tire center to mount and balance. A co-worked told me to go to a performance shop to have it remount and balance with a Hunter road force balance machine. The ride and handling is much better (almost like a new car). I have taken my car to 145 MPH and I corner hard (70-80 MPH on exit ramps). These tires are great price/performance! A year and half ago, I ran over a tool that fell out of a truck on the high way doing 70 MPH. My left front tire was sliced on the side wall about 3" and some damage to the body. Within seconds, my car indicated low tire pressure. The car remains stable and I know I need to be careful. The tire held up and allowed me to take the next exit and park my car. I had that tire replaced. I may need a new set this fall if the "S" is faded out. If not, I should be able to keep it another year. The most important thing for me is finding a qualified place to do the mount and balance. This is KEY on performance cars and tires.
My friend installed a set of DWS Extreme Contact on his BMW 335. He made through this past winter in Michigan with his rear wheel drive (they had over 100" of snow for the season).

P.S. I noticed I lost about 1-2 MPG when I switch from the OEM tires to the DWS...the price I'm willing to pay for better traction.

I'm told Tire Rack do a great job on mount and balance if you buy tires and rims.

Initial Review, 20,000 Miles on Tires
October 24, 2009

Installed on an 08 Escape with the new intelligent 4WD. First thing we noticed was the quiet ride. First test was trying to get it stuck in the mud, the tires come with free wench out, and with mud to the doors and the traction control turned off I floored it, mud went everywhere and the truck pulled strait out. Then it was on to the Apache Trail through the Superstition Mtns, very smooth on on the wash boards and truck was always sure footed. We then took it to Sedona, ARZ and did some off-roading. The truck was sure footed and there was no tire slipping going from rock to rock. Loose gravel and pebbles were no problem. On a drive through the mountains in CAL with a foot of snow on a dirt road the truck maintained 45MPH and the Low Traction light never even flickered. Just a note here, these tires do have the severe snow rating. We drove through a summer rain storm in ARK and the truck was again sure footed. There was standing water on the roadways and we maintained 70MPH. Average MPG is 19/23.

I have a toyota x-runner and I drive the chit out of that truck. owner of a start-up I have to be around a lot. I clocked on about 44000 miles in less than 10 months of having the tires, and i am definitely at the wear bars. I would say the tires will last that 40k they put on the warranty. I am a pretty spirited driver, when it comes to getting in the hills and enjoying a few turns.. I have my truck set up specifically for cornering, and capable of pulling over .9 in the turns now. While these tires cannot hold that type of force, I am impressed with what they can hold. They are great to have fun in, and they give you the milage you need.
I didn't mention anything about the noise, cause my engine I have set up as well, and can hear it over the tires at all times. So it wasn't a priority when i made my initial decision.
Drive hard drive safe.

These tires are great in the snow. I got caught in a sudden snow storm in PA and these tires were unstoppable. I was passing cars, trucks & SUVs that were stuck without a single problem. Last year with my "all-season" tires I couldn't even make it up my driveway with a dusting of snow. Given that I bought these tire for their snow & ice handling I am very pleased.

As far as handling is concerned, I've noticed these tire feel slightly softer than my other tires but then these are on 16" wheels vs 18" wheels. I don't drive aggressively so I haven't noticed any degradation under normal driving conditions. So far there is no road noise to speak of and performance on wet roads has been excellent.

Given that these are WINTER tires and if you are buying them you are looking for winter performance I think they are fabulous. I don't know why people stopped buying winter tires.

I don't normally write reviews on something unless I really like the product or hate it. These are just great tires. Yeah they aren't "truck" tires, but my ego can take it. The tradeoffs are well worth it. I had stock Michelin LTXs. I thought those were pretty good tires (if you can ignore the cracking) but these Firestones are just wonderful as far as ride quality and quietness. I will definitely be rotating and balancing every 5-6K, because that's so crucial to keeping all sorts of problems at bay tire-wise. So glad I chose these tires. Thumbs up Firestone, you got this one right!

I purchased these tires pre-mounted on new alloy rims and had them studded by tire rack. What a difference all around. My truck is only 2 wheel drive and with the 6.0 liter V8 had huge traction problems in snow and ice. Now it will climb the dirt road hill near my home no matter what is on the ground, I can go places that many front wheel drive cars can't get through. Only caution is the studs need serious break in time before you get aggressive as they tend to float the tires on top of the pavement until they wear in. Steering feels VERY light and disconnected until they bed down.

Just put a set on wife's 2008 Avalon, only driven 500 miles on dry roads so far, but VERY happy with these Pirelli's that replaced Michelin Energy MXV4's that wore out way too soon. Have a separate set of wheels/winter tires, so can't comment on snow/ice traction, but other reviews appear positive. Like the responsiveness as well as the ride, and they're pretty quiet on the highway. These are really great tires, I only wish they made them in the size my truck takes, I'd order a set in a heartbeat.

The General AltiMax RT43 is Leading Its Class

Tuesday, March 18, 2014 by Neal O'Neal

General has hit a home run with their AltiMAX RT43. Although fairly new to the market, this tire has already received great feedback from our customers. The most positive comments have focused around the great ride quality, quietness, wet traction and all-season capability.

Strong all-season capability and a comfortable ride is due to the tire's Twin Cushion Silica Tread Compound that places a high-density all-season compound up top with a low-density foundation compound underneath. A symmetrical tread design helps keep noise down and allows for unlimited rotation options. General’s Anti-Slip Sipe Design Technology increases the number of biting edges to enhance traction on slippery roads. Another great feature is General's Low Surface Abrasion Technology which helps reduce tread distortion as the tire rolls. This results in less road abrasion and ultimately promotes longer, more even treadlife.

Take a look at what some of our customers are saying about their experience with the General AltiMAX RT43:

"I put these tires on because the lightness of the rear of the truck made it slip and slide and break loose on corners when the road was slick. That's all gone now. The unique tread design includes little fish hook like cuts which attracted me to the tread design. My choice was justified. Even with light snow on the roads, I have a confident feeling of total control. I'm telling everyone who will listen what I think of these tires. I will buy them for my other vehicle when it becomes necessary." -- Tire Rack Customer Review, 2001 Toyota Tacoma 2wd

"I drive about 100,000 miles a year. These tires have 60,000 miles on them now. This car has driven all over this region of the U.S. The General AltiMAX RT43 is EXCELLENT in every weather situation I have been in. The tires look to have about 5/32" of tread depth remaining. I rotate them every 10,000 miles. They are very comfortable, handle great, don't hydroplane, are great in the snow and on ice. Absolutely the best "budget" tire I have ever had. I will take these over the Goodyear and Michelin tires I have had any day. I really recommend these tires to anyone." - Tire Rack Customer Review, 2007 Honda Civic EX Sedan

The General AltiMAX RT43 is available in H-, V- and T-speed ratings. Shop by vehicle and see if this great tire is available for your application today!

March 13, 2014

We did have the Goodyear Triple Tread on our 2004 Honda Odyessy and it has performed extremely well. Our primary focus was to find an all season tire that perfomed very well in the rain or snow. The Triple Tread on the 2004 Odyessy exceded our expectations. The 2004 Honda sized tires did not create ANY noise issues, and we are pleased with the ride and safety handling on this van. When our 2006 Honda Odyessy needed new tires the Goodyear Triple Tread was a first choice, even though we considered the Michelin tires. We did get the Goodyear for the 2006 Honda in the 16inch stock size and I drove them home and could not believe the noise level! In this 16 inch size the interior noise level is louder than a truck tire. On the 2006 Honda these tires do handle well and are very good in light to medium snow. They do drive very well in the rain, but the noise level is way too high for a all season tire. If I had to do it over I would not choose this same tire. I do hope that Goodyear does look into the design of this tire (in the 16 by 225 version) and modify it to reduce the sound. I would easily give up some tread life to reduce the sound..Thx

put these on and drove from Austin to Boise and back before breaking them in. The trip included 90 degree dry pavement, rain, sleet, ice, deep offroad snow (to the bell housing), offroad dirt and mud, and highway snow (shallow 1-2"). Drove them through an ice storm up ramps with large trucks and 4x4's with normal street tires stuck. the most remarkable thing is my AWD system has not kicked in since i've put these tires on! impressive. I will definitely buy these again. Oh yeah, and I get 1-2 mpg more than my stock tires gave me. nice...

These are outstanding tires that I would highly recommend for so owners. Although these are not winter tires they performed flawlessly when traveling in a wicked snow storm, even passing stuck salt trucks on terrible roads. Much quieter than OE Michelin tires. Wet traction, snow, dry are also much improved. Can't comment on wear but they are outstanding tires WAY better than OE set that only lasted for 13000 miles and were down to 2/32 tread depth. I loved the look on peoples faces as they struggled with there 4wd vehicles to get around in snow as I pass them! Must have for northeast winters if all you want to run is all season tires.

I have been fortunate enough if you want to call it that to really get a good feel for these tires in snow, ice, freezing rain, rain, gravel, and mud. Light snow is not an issue at all. Deeper snow has little to no effect on these tires. I have been averaging driving in 8in to 13in+ with little to no problems. The only issue was on about 6in of ice the truck sank into. These tires have been great and look like they are wearing very even. Great buy.

When I was looking at new tires everyone was pretty much in agreement that these were 'the' tires to get for a Jeep. And they were right. I have been extremely happy with them. Half of my daily drive is on gravel (roughly 16 miles) and it amazes me how well the tread has held up, as gravel just eats the tread off most tires.

I don't think that there is any additional road noise on the highway than the stock light truck tires my Jeep originally came with, which surprised me since these have a much more aggressive tread.

I'm getting ready to buy a new set for this coming winter and by then I should have close to 45,000 miles on these.

I drive about 75 percent of my miles on the highway. But the 25% I drive off road will shred a regular tire in no time flat. I drive on caliche roads with various size rocks and sometimes huge holes. Most 6 and 8 ply tire i have tried over the years would only last about 20,000-22,000 miles. I put 55,000 on a set of Wrangler SilentArmor 6 ply tires and still had a good 8-10,000 miles left when I got a new truck. I never even had a flat even though I regularly would drive over cactus, mesquites and sharp rocks. As long as Goodyear keeps making these tires, they have a loyal customer.
