Costco had these tires on sale for a decent price, so I bought them based on this site's reviews. Up here in Manitoba we have snow & ice on the roads 5-6 months of the year & temperatures that can get as low as -40F. I do a lot of highway driving to get to work, but I live in the city. These tires exceeded my expectations for both city & highway driving. No word of a lie, they pretty much handled like an a/s tire in the summer. The only downside was the noise level...when driving on a road with no ice or snow they hummed like a set of mudders on a truck. This is my first set of winter tires, but I was very impressed & will never again sport a/s tires in the winter.

I've had the BF's on my ION Redline for about 5 yeas now. They handle my FWD cars 250hp 240 ft-lb pretty easily. The tires are not dry rotting and have only given up a little bit of dry traction off the line over the years. Just took them Auto crossing last weekend and the tires still have a ton of grip and handle the abuse. Great tire!

When I got the Michelin Harmony tires in 2003, I was replacing some Goodyears that I thought were OK. The wonderful change in quality was amazing. Man, were the Michelins quiet and quick. I've just turned 94,000 miles on them (two were replaced shortly after I got them when I ran over somebody's bumper after they had a wreck). They have stayed perfectly in balance. I live in the mountains of Colorado and worked as a surgeon so my tires had to grip in winter conditions without fail. Scoobie Doo the Subaru has never been stuck or failed to get me home to 8,000 feet although we did slide a couple of times slowing and turning on glare ice. I'm ordering another set today. They may last longer than I do!

What are the Quietest Tires Available for 2013? Find Out Here!

Thursday, May 23, 2013 by Gary Stanley

In a recent post, "Best Tire Brands for Long Treadwear", some of the longest wearing tires were discussed and how treadlife is one of the most important factors that consumers consider when deciding which tires to buy. In addition to treadlife, tire noise is a major factor to most drivers when selecting a new set of tires. Who wants to listen to the drone of a loud tire during a daily commute or road trip. Besides being a nuisance, loud tire noise can keep a driver from hearing other sounds that can affect vehicle maintenance and safety.

Tires that generally make the least amount of noise typically come from the following performance categories:

  • Standard Touring All-Season
  • Passenger All-Sean
  • Grand Touring All-Season

Many years ago, summer tires were the quietest tires available while all-season tires were louder due to their more aggressive tread patterns. Tire technology has come a long way and the market has changed. Newer summer tires are now primarily focused on high levels of grip, handling and quick steering response, with less focus on road noise. All-season tires are now the best choice for those after a quiet ride. The following tires are some of the top picks for low road noise in three of the quietest categories:

 Michelin Defender
Michelin Defender
 Hankook Optimo H727
Hankook Optimo H727

Stop putting up with loud tires! Shop by vehicle to find a quiet set of tires for your car, truck or crossover.

Michelin Once Again Dominates the One Lap of America in 2013

Thursday, May 23, 2013 by Hunter Leffel

Tire Rack is proud to have continued our title sponsorship of this year's One Lap of America event. One Lap consists of 17 timed events over 8 days. In total, competitors traveled over 3,400 in just over a week. It is a true test of endurance and performance

For the third year in a row, the overall winner's vehicle was equipped with the Michelin Pilot Super Sport. The Super Sport has been on the winning vehicle since it was introduced to the market in the spring of 2011. As the 30th running of this extreme challenge for driving enthusiasts, this year's competition featured many of America's fastest street-legal cars. View results for the 2013 event here.

If you're in the market for the best of the best in wet and dry traction performance, check out the Pilot Super Sport. It has proven its worth not only in the One Lap competition, but also in our testing and feedback from customers. The tire is the top-ranked option in the Max Performance Summer category. After reading a few of our customers' comments, you'll understand why:

"Quite honestly the BEST tire I have ever had on my cars." -- Tire Rack Consumer Review, 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX.

"These tires have oooogles of mega grip, even wet. I am going to need a new seat with harness just to stay in the seat." -- Tire Rack Consumer Review, 2005 Subaru Impreza WRX STI

Also, when you buy a set of four Michelin Pilot Super Sports before June 18, 2013, you can receive a $70 MasterCard Reward Card.

I have used these on my 1M for the last 8,XXX miles. I replaced the OEM Michelin PS2s with the Pilot Super Sports. These tires are roughly $100+ less than the PS2 and have better handling than the PS2s in both the wet and dry. My car mostly does highway miles to and from the road course. I have put 12 track days on these tires and around 8,XXX miles on this set and have maybe another weekend out of them. They are such a good all around tire in the wet and dry that I have purchased a dedicated set in 18" fitment strictly for road track use.

This is going to be my third set of these tires, I drive city, country, and off road with this Escalade, I love these tires, I have only one complaint, they do not come close to 65000 mile ability, noise, stability, toughness, and traction all above average, to excellent, Im a commercial Realtor so I use my vehicle daily, in many driving conditions, would I repurchase this tire, yes, absolutely, safety, and noise are my two concerns, this tire is excellent in both areas..I moved from another major manufacturer to Bridgestone, especially the Japanese tires on all three of my other vehicles, their superior products........

Wanted a tire with superior cornering:DONE! Some reviews mentioned noise below 40 MPH,but I don't spend much time there, so it wouldn't be a problem if there were. Dry traction is outstanding and it hasn't rained yet so wet traction yet to be tested.Best accolade comes from mt wife, who has never commented on anything automotive in 42 years of marriage and said these are the best tires we've ever had. They are made in the USA, which doesn't change the performance. but makes me feel good.

Purchased in 2010 as certified used. Dunlops and Firestone tires were scary, screamy on turns, took for ever to stop, always kept skidding and thus my family was scared to drive/ride. These 4 new Yokohama brought back the true joy of driving and ride comfort. Braking is much shorter and firm. absolute minimum road noise. far better gas mileage. we are enjoying quiet, comfort Toy Sienna drive/ride.

High Mileage Tire Offering from Michelin

Tuesday, May 21, 2013 by Marshall Wisler

Michelin, one of the most respected names in the business, has always been a brand that's associated with excellent wear and long treadlife. While the company previously offered the Harmony and HydroEdge with Green X with 80,000-mile or higher treadwear warranties, these products have been consolidated and replaced with the Defender. Like its predecessors, the Defender has been extremely well received in regards to excellent treadlife, low noise and a good ride.

The Defender is available in 38 sizes to fit many of today's passenger cars and light-duty crossover vehicles. It features a 90,000-mile treadlife warranty and has proven itself as a capable all-season option. Currently ranked as the top tire in the Standard Touring All-Season category, the Defender receives high marks in the following areas:

  • Dry Traction
  • Steering Response
  • Ride Comfort
  • Treadwear
  • Hydroplaning Resistance
  • Cornering Stability
  • Wet Traction
  • Noise Comfort

Take a look at what some of our customers are saying about their experience with the Michelin Defender:

"These are the best tires I have ever purchased. They run quiet and have a soft ride. There is no slipping or sliding on turns and they feel like they are glued to the road." -- Tire Rack Consumer Review, 2010 Toyota Prius IV

"Fantastic tire. Definitely the best tire I have ever had. Extremely quiet, stable and a great ride." -- Tire Rack Consumer Review, 2003 Pontiac Vibe

"The Defenders are quiet and have amazing traction in Oregon rain. No hydroplaning and I get 36 mpg on the freeway. They are on our 2009 Toyota Camry XLE. I'm now buying them for our Cadillac! I have never been more pleased with a tire purchase." -- Tire Rack Consumer Review, 2009 Toyota Camry XLE

I have gotten 20K miles on these tires over 3.5 years and am down to the wear bars in the middle. Some of this wear is due to running too high pressure and wearing the middle out somewhat prematurely. Tires performed very well, some corners that I've taken were impressive. Driving was mostly city and congested freeway, but have made several trips up to the mountains where I was able to have a little fun in the TLS. The tires have been pretty noisy on some surfaces for the last year. This is probably too much tire for my driving habits.
