Initial Review, 450 Miles on Tires
March 29, 2014

First let me say I am NOT the person who writes reviews of any kind unless I'm thoroughly impressed ... and it taks a lot to impress me. Second, I believe in purchasing the best available in two categories ... brakes and tires. Your life, my life, and in this case, my girlfriends life, ride upon brakes and tires.

As you see, we've only got 450 miles on these tires so they are barely broken in.

This morning, in a typical Florida torrential rain, I went to the Post Office. While moving about 20 MPH on asphalt, I hammered the brakes. Anti-lock kicked in and the car came to a stop in an absolute blink of an eye. No tire slippage AT ALL! I was amazed! The Turanza EL 400's slipped almost before stabbing the brakes. Next, the puddle test ... with no wheel jerk, no hydroplaning, no difference at all from the drivers seat. These are GREAT tires! Then the lane marker noise test ... absolutely unbelievable. I recognized the General's were quieter than the Turanza's as soon as I installed them, but even over the markers they are quiet.

The Post Office parking lot was deserted, and made of concrete, so I decided to try wet traction on concrete. Hard turns, quick response, no slippage of any kind. Hard accelleration in a turn ... nothing but stick. Same thing on wet asphalt ... I couldn't believe it.

I selected these tires mainly for the wet traction and hydroplaning resistance(in Florida, that is a "no brainer"). Look at their rating yourself!

In a nutshell, I thank Tire Rack, their research and the reviews of fellow buyers for leading me to these tires. They ranked #1 in the category and for less $ than the big names. I took a chance and am glad I did. This is the first set of General's I've ever owned but won't be the last. Thanks again Tire Rack!

Initial Review, 27,000 Miles on Tires
March 29, 2014

The G-MAX was my third set of tires on this car. 35000 miles seems to be about the maximum amount mileage I can get out of a set of tires with this car. I keep it aligned and watch tire pressure closely but, I cannot rotate the tires due to the different size tires and offset of the OEM wheels. For all around performance, the G-MAX was better than the OEM Bridgestones and the second set Kumho LX, which performed well except on ice and deep snow. However, there is a reason why I only got 27,000 miles instead of 35,000+ with the G-max. I had to replace them because I couldn't stand the noise anymore. The first 5000 miles were fine but after that it sounded like I was running mud tires. Handling on dry, wet, snow and ice were fine. Treadwear good and even. Noise was awful. My radio only goes up to 10. VanHalen called me and ask me to quit playing their music so loud. Now trying the Hankook Ventus and Eddie hasn't called once. I'll report back in 20,000 miles. BTW,Tire Rack rocks. Working on about my 10th set of tires with different vehicles from them.

This is my first experience with Conti's that I can say was outstanding! I am a very spirited driver in Michigan, in the worst winter we have had in 50 years and these tires performed wonderfully! 20K and these tires are still going strong and still handle competently. The only negatives (but very nominal negative) is they do generate just a bit of road noise, the sacrifice was comfort for handling (they don't take bumps great)but they are absolutely outstanding in the turns, on wet pavement and in the snow. For you high end tech. guys......These tires road-force wonderfully! I have installed 2 sets and every tire road forced to less than 10 lbs and balanced with minimal weights. The last set I installed (205 50 16's) only required a total of 3 ounces of wheel weights for all 4 tires and the tire with the worst road force numbers had 9 lbs of road force. These are GREAT tires! Forget about the Continentals of yester-year!

Initial Review, 4,000 Miles on Tires
March 26, 2014

I live in Buffalo and I mounted these the week of Thanksgiving so I have a whole winter`s worth of driving to judge the quality of these tires.

Likes:

Wet traction because I felt good road grip through puddles.
I did not experience any wheel spinning during accelerating and my PT cruiser felt secure during cornering. This happened during first lake effect event. It was a light snow event and this is why I gave the tires level 10 for light snow.
Driving down the highway during another snowfall, the PT felt very secure and I did not detect fishtailing or slipping. Also level 10 for highway driving
Good performance during very cold days, and I always felt in control of the PT.

Dislikes:

During deep snow I had good grip accelerating but a little slippage cornering. That's why I only rated it level 8.
I found after very cold nights, snow packed in the treads does not melt and reduces the traction on the tires the next morning. I assume the same occurs on all snow tires.

Miscellaneous:

I got temporarily stuck in a snow drift on an unplowed street during our first blizzard. I freed myself after a short time.
I give these tires a level 10 for getting out of the snowdrift.
Overall great product from General Tire.

The van came with the Michelin LX4's which wore out at 40k. Was very happy with the feel of the Michelins in all conditions except for the snow in which they were dreadful. I use Blizzaks in the winter on dedicated wheels. Purchased the RT43's to replace the LX4's thinking that spring was here and wouldn't you know it, we get hit with a snow/ice storm. The RT43's were quite good in the snow/ice on brand new tires although I prefer a dedicated snow tire for the van.

For regular driving the RT43's are close to the Michelins but I prefer the feel of the Michelins. However, given the price differential between a new set of LX4's (or Defenders) and the all around capability of the RT43's plus favorable reviews, these tires get high marks and were worth a try. If they last 50K for this van which has a reputation for eating up tires, it is a no brainer. If they don't last, back to the Michelins.

As far as fuel economy is concerned, I think that the Michelins are better but time will tell.

I bought these tires over a month ago dead winter. In snow the traction is not the best but did exceed my expectations. unlike the other reviews, the tires provide a reasonable traction for their type much better than the previous ones I had. In Dry conditions, no comment, everything is very very good. I will definitely purchase another pair when the time comes. Plus you can't beat the price...

I purchased these tires pre-mounted on new alloy rims and had them studded by tire rack. What a difference all around. My truck is only 2 wheel drive and with the 6.0 liter V8 had huge traction problems in snow and ice. Now it will climb the dirt road hill near my home no matter what is on the ground, I can go places that many front wheel drive cars can't get through. Only caution is the studs need serious break in time before you get aggressive as they tend to float the tires on top of the pavement until they wear in. Steering feels VERY light and disconnected until they bed down.

I wanted to get all-terrain tires before winter as the mud terrains I usually drive on were worn and not very good on snow covered roads, not to mention roads that are just damp. The Generals are fantastic! The ride is comfortable, quiet and the steering is accurate and "grippy". They can be trusted on wet roads as well, no drift or hydroplaning. I spent the winter in deep snow and "plowed" roads and these tires never lost grip. I think I have about 3000 miles on them with no noticeable wear. Looking forward to using these tires off-road and I will definitely buy these tires again.

Max Performance Summer Tires for 2014

Friday, March 28, 2014 by Ben Rooney

Here in South Bend, Indiana we are nearly thawed out from a brutal winter and it is time to start considering what tires to run this summer. For enthusiasts with cars that are driven on the street as opposed to the track, this usually means selecting a tire from our Max Performance Summer category. Max Performance Summer tires feature advanced ultra low profile, high speed options that combine computer developed designs and unique materials with precision manufacturing techniques to provide an unsurpassed blend of dry and wet traction and handling.

If you're shopping for a set of tires from this performance category, here are your top picks:

King of the Hill: Michelin Pilot Super Sport

The Pilot Super Sport does everything well: wet traction, dry traction, steering response, braking and even treadlife is better than average for the category. This tire is designed to allow sports cars, sporty coupes, performance sedans and supercars to achieve their full potential in dry and wet conditions. Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires are competitively priced and usually cheaper than the previous generation Pilot Sport PS2.

Top Tier Value: Bridgestone S-04 Pole Position

The Bridgestone S-04 Pole Position is a leading member of the most recent generation of Max Performance Summer tires. While their raw grip is not quite equal to the Michelin Pilot Super Sport, they have excellent traction in wet and dry conditions, are extremely stable and provide confident handling. Bridgestone has been pricing them very aggressively, and in some sizes, you'd almost be crazy not to buy a tire this good at such a low price.

Lots of Grip, Not Yet Hyped: Yokohama ADVAN Sport V105

If you're the type of enthusiast who likes to do things a little differently from the rest, this may be the tire for you. The Yokohama ADVAN Sport V105 has not yet made a big splash in the marketplace, but it has exceptional grip. I'm also a fan of the responsive handling that its stiff sidewalls provide. To see how the tire performed during our in-house test, read "New Yokohama ADVAN Sport V105 Tested."

View all Max Performance Summer tires we offer and find the one that will make your summer driving a blast!

I have these mounted on a 2013 Mustang GT, with 245front, 275 rear. For the most part, I am very pleased with the tire. My only concern is in wet weather, during spirited acceleration, these will break loose pretty quickly. Not just during active rain, just on wet roads, these will start spinning if I am not careful. Wet braking is very good, and if I had to choose, I would much rather have the tires hold during braking. Having the back tires break loose when you hit third gear on wet roads reduces trust in the tire. I have had other high performance cars and tire, but never one with 420 hp, so that could be part of the problem(?) Tires look great, would buy them again.

The General AltiMax RT43 is Leading Its Class

Tuesday, March 18, 2014 by Neal O'Neal

General has hit a home run with their AltiMAX RT43. Although fairly new to the market, this tire has already received great feedback from our customers. The most positive comments have focused around the great ride quality, quietness, wet traction and all-season capability.

Strong all-season capability and a comfortable ride is due to the tire's Twin Cushion Silica Tread Compound that places a high-density all-season compound up top with a low-density foundation compound underneath. A symmetrical tread design helps keep noise down and allows for unlimited rotation options. General’s Anti-Slip Sipe Design Technology increases the number of biting edges to enhance traction on slippery roads. Another great feature is General's Low Surface Abrasion Technology which helps reduce tread distortion as the tire rolls. This results in less road abrasion and ultimately promotes longer, more even treadlife.

Take a look at what some of our customers are saying about their experience with the General AltiMAX RT43:

"I put these tires on because the lightness of the rear of the truck made it slip and slide and break loose on corners when the road was slick. That's all gone now. The unique tread design includes little fish hook like cuts which attracted me to the tread design. My choice was justified. Even with light snow on the roads, I have a confident feeling of total control. I'm telling everyone who will listen what I think of these tires. I will buy them for my other vehicle when it becomes necessary." -- Tire Rack Customer Review, 2001 Toyota Tacoma 2wd

"I drive about 100,000 miles a year. These tires have 60,000 miles on them now. This car has driven all over this region of the U.S. The General AltiMAX RT43 is EXCELLENT in every weather situation I have been in. The tires look to have about 5/32" of tread depth remaining. I rotate them every 10,000 miles. They are very comfortable, handle great, don't hydroplane, are great in the snow and on ice. Absolutely the best "budget" tire I have ever had. I will take these over the Goodyear and Michelin tires I have had any day. I really recommend these tires to anyone." - Tire Rack Customer Review, 2007 Honda Civic EX Sedan

There are so many better tires for a cheaper price than these. I would not recommend these to anyone. I blew 2 in a year, and now know to get another brand. Even looking at tread patterns from the Continental or General Tire's you can see they would be better for cheaper.

I have used General tires on other vehicles. Grabber AT2's on my Tundra. The RT43 was recommended for my wife's Jeep Patriot as an all around excellent tire. So far it's been great. We spent the month of February in the north country where we received snow every couple days. Our driveway is rather steep and just for the heck of it I tried to go up in 2wd on packed snow. The tires gripped amazingly well and never slipped once. She typically uses 4wd in snow, but had to try just to see. So far, very happy with this tire.

Great tire thus far. Not many miles driven but they have already seen the worst of PA, weather, and now potholes. So far great tire. Will update if anything changes!
