LOVE these tires. Finally splurged and got a dedicated set of winter tires and I'm so happy I did. For the first year of ownership I just drove with OEM Yoko Geolanders and honestly I was questioning my reasoning for buying a Subaru - I did not like the snow/ice capabilities of that tire at all (there were a couple times where I just slid straight when trying to turn). However these new tires are amazing. Here in VT they take their sweet time clearing the roads when big storms hit, yet I feel confident and safe taking my car for a spin if need be. I plowed right through 10" fresh snow no problem on our street before the plows came through. Great traction and I have no worries when I travel home from work (45 mins) during a storm. Heck, I prefer taking the back roads now rather than the highway and enjoy the calm scenery and spirited trek home. Will definitely be purchasing another set once these are used up, great tire for New England winter conditions, especially when paired w/ my trusty AWD Subaru.

Choosing Between Performance Winter / Snow Tires and Studless Ice & Snow Tires

Monday, March 17, 2014 by Gary Stanley

As a moderator of several forums, I have received many questions on snow tires this winter. Recently, a customer had a question about choosing between Studless Ice & Snow tires and Performance Winter / Snow tires:

I’m getting ready to order winter tires and wheels. My concern is that here in Denver, we can have big changes in temperatures. It’s not uncommon to be able to wear short sleeves during February and March, while the ski resorts are getting pounded less than 80 miles away. Given the temperature range, are there any brands I should stay away from that get squirmy when it gets warmer? 95% of my driving is in the Denver area. I only have two clients in the foothills just west of town.

Here was my response to his question:

Most of the tires in the Studless Ice & Snow category like the Bridgestone Blizzak WS70, Continental ExtremeWinterContact and Michelin X-Ice Xi3 will have slower steering response in warmer temperatures, and thus, feel a little squirmy. Of these choices, the Michelin X-Ice Xi3 feels the least squirmy, but would still give you outstanding snow and ice traction for the times you have to drive on snow-covered roads.

If you move to a Performance Winter / Snow tire like the Bridgestone Blizzak LM-32 or Dunlop SP Winter Sport 4D, you'll find that these tires have more responsive handling even in warmer temperatures. Unfortunately, there's a noticeable step down in snow and ice traction when compared to Studless Ice & Snow tires.

Are you trying to make a similar decision? You may want to lean towards one of the more aggressive snow tires like those listed above if one or more of the following are true :

  • Your geographical area gets heavy snowfall and/or lake-effect snow.
  • You are often driving on packed snow and ice.
  • You are willing to give up some dry grip and steering response for maximum winter traction.
  • You are a newer driver or want more confidence when driving in winter conditions.

Choosing between these two performance categories may be difficult and is mostly a personal preference choice for the trade-off between snow traction and dry road handling. When making your decision, keep in mind what are the worst conditions you'll experience. This is the time when you will need traction the most!  You can read about my experience with winter tires by reading, "My Story on Winter Tires."

Considering there is 560HP going through a 255 winter tire instead of the usual 285 hi performance summer tire, its obvious that aggressive driving is not going to be the same. But I'm not complaining. Its been snowing in Chicago ever since I put these on. The roads are either a snowy, slushy mess, or wet/ icy, or have a slippery layer of salt the few times its been dry. These tires have cut through the snow brilliantly. I used to have a WRX; I can almost say this car has not been an hindrance in this weather. Ice and salt performance has been great with a good amount of feel making it easy to predict when the rear end is going to let loose. Nice tires!!

The Subaru's all-wheel drive probably played a big part but these Pirellis are so far the best winter tires I've tried. Even better than Bridgestone Blizzaks that I've had on other Subarus, which themselves were excellent winter tires. The Pirellis have fantastic grip on packed snow and slush. The only time I experienced slight wheel spin was on glare ice. I also commend Tire Rack on their quickness of delivery. It usually took a few days on previous orders but this time I placed my order early afternoon one day and UPS delivered the following day. Can't get any better than that.

I made 3000 miles with this tire. My wife drives this car, but I use it when we go to ski together. I went from 235/50 R18 which is OEM for SEL model to 215/65 R16 for winter. It was good decision. I went with this tire, because I wanted hardcore winter tire for this car. My VW CC is equipped with Bridgestone LM-60 (and they perform extremely well).
Anyway, on Tiguan, due to the AWD, these tires are just going forward with gusto. So far no issues, driving on snow packed roads, went through 3ft of snow: no issue!
If you need tire to go to ski, for lot of snow, ice, slush: this is tire for you.
Be aware: This tire is extremely soft, which is good for ice, snow. However, if you live in states where there is no much snow, but have black ice, maybe Michelin X Ice 3 would be better, since it has better dry capabilities. WS 70 is good tire, but on dry you can feel all that softness.

Great winter tire. Really happy with them on my wife's '08 328xi (AWD). Previously had the WS60's on an older 328i (RWD).

Like the WS60's (and other winter tires in general) they are a bit soft in the corners & a bit noisy at highway speed in dry conditions. But you remember why you bought them when the snow falls!

Would definitely buy these again.

These tires are simply amazing. The traction in snow and on ice is beond what I would have expected. I can drive through light/ moderate snow and on ice easily better than I can in my truck with all terrain tires on. My wife has loved them and has found herself asking what everyone elses problem is trying to drive in the snow. I will recomend these to anyone and everyone. I myself will next time the tires I use on my truck for winter(all terrains) with the truck equiolent of the Blizzak WS70

I bought this tire a month ago to slap on our 12' Odyssey minivan after it was clear this was going to be the winter from "The Day After Tomorrow." A genius move. My minivan is now like a snowcat capable of grooming trails on Mt. Fuji. Over ice the van remains under control. Over packed snow permanently residing over our streets these past several weeks, I can accelerate and pass any car or truck in my way. The tires do not slide away but rather bite and pull with confidence. The rear-end of the long minivan always feels stable. The difference between these dedicated snow ties and our OEM all-seasons is more stark than Madonna's face at the Grammy's. Dry traction is much better than expected considering my past experiences years ago with the WS-50s. An added bonus is how the soft tread blocks soften the impacts with the new potholes created by over-caffinated snow plow operators. Overall, I couldn't be happier after spending money out of budget in January. So far the snow keeps coming and we keep going. I strongly recommend these tires to any wife out there that refuses to listen to her husband's plea for approval to spend money on "snow" tires. Your ignorance will quickly be replaced with enlightenment.

Bought these tires with a threat of snow that never happened. Now we are having a snow/ice event that is rare in terms of volume of snow for Portland. These tires have been fantastic in the snow and better than expected on the ice. I've always used studded tires for winter tires and the Blizzak's are the first studless snow tire I've run on snow and ice. They are well worth the investment. The Altima's CVT transmission requires a feather touch with the throttle in bad weather conditions, and these tires have handled everything extremely well. Starting and stopping on hills, no problem. Driving on packed snowy roads covered with freezing rain on top, no problem. Can't praise these tires enough. Just buy them!

This is my daily driver so I had to buy a set of snow tires after going through a rough winter last year without them. There is a lot more snow here than back home. I decided to invest in snow tires and boy was I surprised when I first got to test these bad boys in fresh snow. Initial reaction was joy and amazement. I had them mounted on right before a big storm hit. I had traction like crazy. I was the only one on the left lane able to conquer the storm. But that snow was not as bad as recently where it actually snowed hard and stuck to the ground. Since my car is low by default, I was able to clear snow up to about 8-10 inches of snow before the rear axle was blocked by thick snow. This was my no fault of the tires. I was able to go drifting in snow with precise control with these. These tires love the cold weather as well as the snow. I strongly recommend these to anyone interested in snow tires. I chose these over the Xi3 from Michelin due to price. I know granted that my car is RWD and has a good amount of horsepower, there was some slippage if you don't feather the throttle. By no means is this tire perfect in the snow, but it does give you good tread life.

I drive a 2011 Rav4 all wheel/4wheel drive compact SUV. I had 2 year old all season tires that failed terribly in even the smallest of snowfalls. So after a lot of research I chose these and I am so happy I did. Where I had trouble before, now I don’t. Slush to me is worse than ice, and now it’s no problem, along with deep snow. It just snowed here 12” and I drove through it to see if I could loose traction, I even zig zaged and didn’t. Where I had trouble getting out of snow covered side streets without spinning out, with my blizzak dm v-1’s I pull out into on-coming traffic with no trouble at all. I have a ¾ mile steep up hill I take to go to work and covered with snow I had no problem going up it at all. The first thing in spring I plan to replace them for {Bridgestone Dueler H/L 422 Ecopia (Crossover/SUV Touring All-Season)}

I have always believed that Blizzaks are the best winter tires you can get. My car feels planted and surefooted with these tires. There is no excessive ABS and traction interventions when I am driving. I am very impressed as how smooth the tires are on the highways and on the back roads. It is comfortable and still provides excellent steering feel unlike the older Bridgestone Blizzaks. It handles better then my all season Michelins. The road noise is average for winter tire. The traction in light snow is fantastic! Even in deep snow, my car can claw through the pack snow plus ice without getting stuck. Compared to Dunlop Wintersport 3D and Michelin Pilot Alpin Pa4 which are also performance oriented tires, the Blizzaks have better handling with better snow capabilities unlike the former two tires. I highly recommend these tires.

I couldn't get up my driveway with the street tires. On goes the Blizzak's and it's like driving on dry pavement. Great snow / ice tire. The car feels a little loose on dry pavement and gas mileage has dropped off a hair but I would expect that vs. a high performance street tire. Great product. Do yourself a favor and switch to snow / ice tires if you want the comfort of feeling safe during the winter months.

I bought this tire because I live at 6000 ft and my previous all season wasn't cutting it in the deep snow. The other tire wasn't bad but we get 1 ft at time sometimes. This tire is superb in deep snow. I mean superb. I couldn't believe the difference from my all season. It felt like you I was driving on pavement again. If you want to get away from using chains in all but the absolute worst conditions the blizzak will not disappoint.
