STR class for autocross

Thursday, May 20, 2010 by Jim Holloman
The TRMotorsport C3 is a 17X9 62mm offset wheel that fits front and rear on the Honda S2000 for autocrossing. You can run the 255/40R17 tires front and rear for the best handling. It is a very aggressive application for the street but to be competitive in this class it is the best option.

The wheel is only 19.2 lbs and it comes in black, carbon gray and bright silver.

The best tires that I have run on for this class would be the Bridgestone Potenza RE-11. They are as close as a track tire for the street that you will see. We actually turned just over 1G in a stock 3 Series BMW in a tire test with the RE-11.

Lets go racing.

Honda S2000 Performance Tires

Friday, May 14, 2010 by Jim Holloman
There are a number of tires that will work on the Honda S2000 but the three or four best that I have seen are the Bridgestone Potenza RE-11, Dunlop Direzza Star Spec , Yokohama Advan Neova and the Kumho Ecsta XS . All of these tires are going to give you excellent performance on the street and can be driven in an autocross or on the track. They are suited for someone that is a very aggressive driver that really wants the best performance for his or her car.

The tire that I would have to rank as the overall best would be the RE11. In testing they held up the best and offered the best wet traction.

If you are looking for the extremes you cannot go wrong with any of these for the S2K. Great for the street or track.

OZ Racing Wheels

Monday, May 3, 2010 by Jim Holloman
Have you checked out the OZ Racing rims on the Mazda Mazdaspeed3 in the Continental Tire Challenge? The O.Z. Alleggerita HLT is used on the cars for the road racing series. They are a complete street wheel but they only weigh 15.6 lbs in a 17x8 wheel. Unlike other racing series, these cars are dedicated race cars but they are running street wheels that anybody can buy and use on their own car. Lightweight wheels will improve the car's performance by reducing unsprung weight.

Even though the wheels are light they are also still very strong. Sounds like a win-win.

Check out the wheels on the new Speedsource Mazdaspeed3. Those are the O.Z. Alleggerita HLT. They are a street wheel being used on a race car in the Continental Challenge Street Tuner class and give more than enough performance and durability to handle the track and the street. They are a lightweight 15.6 lbs on a 17X8 wheel and are available in custom colors for a nice look on the street or track.

You can see the cars racing in the Grand Am Series. They are also using a new Conti R compound tire that is made for Continental by Hoosier Racing Tire.  In this series you get to see the door-to-door racing while the cars are actually turning right and left.  Plus, they are a street car made into a race car. If you have never been to one of these races you should check it out. The drivers are accessible and you can get right into the pits to see everything that goes on. Normally on a weekend of racing you will see five or six different types of events one after another.

Winter is near

Thursday, September 24, 2009 by Jim Holloman

I hate to admit it but the winter snow tire season is near.  Every year I take off my summer wheels and tires around the second week of November.  I wash and wax them and put them away for the cold months.  I then break out the Bridgestone Blizzaks for the BMW and the Honda.  My neighbors wander what I am doing but I know what is coming.
I tried to talk my neighbor into the Blizzaks for her Honda Odyssey but she thought it was just too much of a hassle and money.
The way I look at it is it is the cheapest insurance I can get.  One slide off into something and the wheels and tires are paid for.  Plus it gives me a reason to buy more wheels for the car and I get better handling summer tires.   Sounds like a win win for me.
I had to convince my wife but only before she drove on the Blizzaks.  She will not go through the winter without them now.
As much as I hate to see it summer is over...bring on the snow.

World Challenge at Autobahn

Wednesday, July 8, 2009 by Jim Holloman

Anybody going to be attending the Grand Prix in Joliet the end of the month?  I went to the races last year at Road America and had a great time.  There is going to be 7 different racing series on one day.  Come on out and enjoy road racing at its best and cheer on the car of choice.  There is suppose to be a MBZ SLR racing in the Speed GT class.

My favorite wheels are the  BBS wheels.   I also like the OZ Racing wheels.  Both of these wheel lines can be seen on your daily driven cars.  The BBS wheels look great on the BMW's.  Whether you track your car or it is just a daily driver it will update the look and reduce unsprung weight..
