Decent tires for my 335i coupe. Pleasantly surprised by braking on the pure ice. As expected from studless winter tires (which softer than studded) steering is vague and reaction is delayed. Both acoustic and ride comfort are great. Response in snow is predictable and linear. I had a lot of fun fun making donuts in snow and skidding the car in corners. Rubber itself is much softer than in high performance tires models (like Michelin Alpin) that are actually for mild european winter. That makes it more suitable for the severe winter. Overall I can recommend these tires.

Early days yet, but winter is finally here in Michigan and that's starting to give a sense for the tires. So far, I can say definitively that in cold and dry pavement conditions, these are not as good as summer performance tires in warm weather - duh, right?. But the drop off isn't so much that I can bring myself to care. In cold and wet, performance is just excellent. Noise, not appreciably more than the summer tires. Stable, and comfortable at highway speeds - have done several hundred miles now at 75-85. No wandering, no floating. First major snow was this week - 4" coming down hard, mid-teens temperatures, several hours on unplowed, snow-packed freeways and surface streets. This is the stuff I bought winter tires for, and these were great. Acceleration, braking, cornering all rock solid, stable and safe.

Initial Review, 10000 Miles on Tires
January 03, 2012

I have never reviewed a tire on this site but felt compelled to after driving on these the past 2 winters. I picked up an unused set of these on eBay for my 95 M3 after reading some reviews around the web and have been very impressed. They proved excellent in all snow conditions that I have encountered and are in fact some of the best rain tires I've had on my car. They will simply not hydroplane at sane speed. I have driven my M3 in snow deep enough to get plowed by the front bumper and while it takes some finesse to get moving from a stop in those conditions, once underway traction was excellent.

As can be expected, these tires do reduce steering response and their softness makes its presence known through the corners and under hard braking. These tires also get quite squirmy at north of 45 degrees or so. All this is par for the course with winter tires of any make I feel.

After having my car perform as well as it did with these tires on I recently suggested a friend put them on her '12 Subaru Outback for the Syracuse winter. No snow as of January 3rd but I suspect once it does come her car will be an absolute tank.

Initial Review, 19450 Miles on Tires
January 18, 2011

These tires were original equipment on my 2010 Touareg TDI. Drove the car home from the dealer in a big MN winter storm and raved about the new SUV being the most stable and confidence inspiring vehicle I’ve ever driven in snow. Head and shoulders above the Subaru Outback and Honda Pilot, which were both great. Made the RWD BMW 530i I traded in seem like a bad joke (even with Dunlop performance snows). However, this second winter, the Contact 4x4s are down to 6/32 tread depth. They are now treacherous in snow or ice conditions. The advanced 4WD, weight, and traction control of the Touareg help the car launch ok and feel moderately stable underway, but there is huge understeer when turning and nearly zero braking action in anything slippery. In addition, these tires ride hard, and hammer the suspension. Tire wear is unacceptably bad as well. Looking at $1,400 to replace set of tires after less than 20,000 miles. That is 7 cents per mile, or $3.50 worth of tire to go to work and back. Fuel is only $7! Very similar in ride and handling to the Conti Contact CH95 which came standard on BMW sedans for years. Handles ok, and performs fine when new. Decent grip and turn-in in dry conditions. Very poor in snow after a few miles, and tread wear about half of what you expect from a comparable Michelin. Why did you do this to me VW? Why? Planning to go to Michelin Latitude Tour HP for round #2. Wish me luck.

Initial Review, 8000 Miles on Tires

Purchased this tire to replace a worn set of Dunlop Sport Signatures. After a few road trips I consider these tires a great riding tire with light sporting tendencies. The strength of the Dunlops was its braking and handling. The Continentals are QUIET for a All Season Performance tire. The grip of the Continentals is good. The steering control is best described as the difference between stirring a spoon in a glass of room temp maple syrup to stirring spoon in a glass of refrigerated maple syrup, it moves well just a tad slower. Every tire should not be a track tire, you have to consider at the roads you drive on. I consider the characteristics of delayed steering input, good grip, and quiet ride great for a daily driver.

I am tired of brake dust!

Saturday, September 4, 2010 by Jim Holloman
If you are like me, you're probably really tired of cleaning your wheels a day after washing your car. While the brakes on my BMW are very good, they just make a mess of the wheels. I have found two things that really make a difference.

Number one is changing to a ceramic brake pad like Hawk Performance Ceramic or Akebono Euro Ceramic.  They are still going to give you the braking you need but you can go between car washes before you have to clean the wheels.

Secondly, I use Griot's Garage Paint Sealant to coat the wheels. The sealant really keeps the brake dust from adhereing to the wheels and makes washing them so much easier.

A New Player for Your Crossover/SUV

Friday, August 20, 2010 by Tucker Glenn
Pirelli recently unveiled its new addition to the Crossover/SUV category with the Scorpion Verde All Season. This new offering is built for lighter weight SUVs like the Audi Q5, the BMW X3 or X5, and of course, our test vehicle, the Porsche Cayenne.

Pirelli Scorpion Verde All SeasonDuring the road ride for the Pirelli Scorpion Verde All Season, I noticed right away something that wasn't there...road noise. I was able to hear the engine roar over the tires, which is always a good thing! There is a portion of our drive that has very heavy, bumpy expansion joints in the road every five feet for about a half mile. It's not pretty no matter what tire is on the vehicle and can be downright brutal with the wrong tire. But I was very impressed with the Scorpion Verde All Season's ability to lessen the impact of those joints and make it a tolerable ride.

On the track, the sprinklers were on for my run and I was impressed at the Pirelli's stopping ability in the wet, along with its capability around the skid pad. The Pirelli required less input from the brake and the gas pedal to correct slippage. Just a slight release of the gas and it was back on track.

The new Pirelli Scorpion Verde All Season seems poised to make a run at some of the current kings of the Crossover/SUV market. Take a look and see if this tire fits your vehicle!

Keep Those Wheels Clean

Thursday, August 19, 2010 by Ben Rooney
Whether your wheels are a brand new set of top-of-the-line BBS or the original factoryGriot's Garage Painted Wheel Care Kit alloys, they look a whole lot better when they are clean. The biggest offender against clean wheels is brake dust, and once it sits on the wheel for a few days it can be a real pain to get off.

I like to keep my wheels clean, but I have a lot of things that take up my time, and I don't always get to do as much upkeep on them as I would like.

The brake pads on German cars tend to be great for stopping, but make a lot of dust. After a couple weeks of neglect, my BMW wheels were looking pretty nasty. I had a little sample bottle of Griot's Garage Wheel Cleaner and decided to give it a try. To say that I was impressed would be an understatement. Using nothing but the cleaner, the little detail mitt they provide and some rinse water, I had all the nasty, caked-on brake dust off all 4 wheels in about 20 minutes. No hard scrubbing required, just spray, wipe, rinse, and then go back and hit any little spots you missed the first time.

I have tried other cleaners in the past, but none worked as well as this. If you have years of caked on dust, you'll probably need a little more elbow grease, but if anything can get your wheels looking good, it's the Griot's Garage products.

The Lowdown on Low Rolling Resistance

Thursday, July 22, 2010 by Cooper
Wet track testWith the advent of new green propulsion technologies for cars, light trucks, and SUVs, it is only natural that tire manufacturing companies would take an interest in developing more fuel-efficient tires. Market demand for such tires will only continue to increase as the fleet of hybrid, electric, and diesel-powered vehicles grows and becomes more and more ubiquitous.

Certainly, lowering tire rolling resistance by optimizing a tire’s weight, internal structure, tread design and tread compound make it possible to reduce vehicle fuel consumption and consequently, lower emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. But fuel efficiency comes with a price. And as is the case with tires across performance categories, there are some trade-offs when it comes to low rolling resistance tires.

My first experience driving a vehicle with the new crop of low rolling resistance tires came last year while visiting the Continental Tire Proving Grounds in Uvalde, Texas. Among the driving exercises was a braking test: we had to accelerate a 2010 Ford Escape equipped with LRR tires down a (dry) straight to a speed of 45 mph and then slam the brakes once the vehicle hit a wet pad. We tested summer and all-season tires, and one set of low rolling resistance (LRR) tires on the Escape. This being my first experience with LRR tires, I was surprised at the results: the LRR tire took significantly longer to come to a complete stop.

A few months later as part of Tire Rack's testing program, we tested four different sets of LRR tires on four identical Toyota Prius. Our road route consists of expressway, state highway and county roads to provide a variety of road conditions that include smooth and coarse concrete, as well as new and patched asphalt. The route allows our team to experience noise comfort, ride quality and everyday handling, just as most drivers do during their drive to school or work. After the test, I noticed that when compared to other non-LRR tires, there was a considerable difference in ride quality. We also performed dry and wet track tests with the Prius and our BMW 3 Series and the LRR tires showed considerably less grip on wet than their standard counterparts -- especially on the Bimmer.

So after all these tests, my recommendation is this: your tire selection should match not only how you drive, but what you drive. I would definitely recommend LRR tires to customers who drive hybrid cars and for whom fuel efficiency is the ultimate goal. Given the substantial differences in wet traction and braking distances on wet, LRR tires may not be suitable to be used on performance cars being driven in a more spirited manner.

Cryogenically treated brake rotors?

Wednesday, July 21, 2010 by Gary Stanley

Power Alloy Cryo-Treated RotorsLike many other drivers, are you looking for long lasting, warp-resistant brake rotors? Look no further than Power Alloy Cryo-Treated Rotors by Power Slot!

Whether you drive a BMW, Audi, Porsche or even a sport truck or performance SUV, you can experience the benefits of cryo-treated rotors.

What is cryogenic treatment?

Deep cryogenic treatment is a process that permanently improves the performance and service life of metals from brake rotors. Power Slot uses a proprietary computer-controlled process where the metal is cooled gradually to -300°F and then slowly returned to room temperature and heat-cycled as the final step.

What are the advantages of cryogenic treatment?

Even though you cannot see the difference, rotors treated cryogenically show large improvements in longevity. Cryogenic processing makes rotors more wear-resistant and durable while increasing protection against warping.
  • Rotors resist cracking, warping and fading.
  • Rotors last 2-3 times longer. Fewer pads and rotors are needed.
  • Rotors stop consistently and predictably.

What Speeds Up Must Slow Down, Don't Forget the Brakes

Monday, May 17, 2010 by Chad Hocker
Don't overlook your brake system when upgrading your vehicle with performance parts. Tire Rack has a number of brake pads and brake rotors available to fit the needs of your driving style. If you prefer replacement brake pads similar to the Original Equipment pads or something with a little more performance or event track pads, Tire Rack has them available and while replacing the pads it's also a good time to replace the rotors while you're on the job.

Don't worry; all you need to know is which vehicle you want to put your brakes on. We have Audi Brake Pads, Acura Brake Pads, BMW Brake Pads, and Brake Pads made to fit many other vehicles. Just let us know the year, make and model of your car and we'll guide you through the selection process.

All of the brake pads and brake rotors are divided into four categories: Premium, Performance Street, Autocross/Track and Truck & SUV.  I would suggest picking rotors and brakes from the same performance categories to ensure a good match.

Brake Squeak!

Friday, May 7, 2010 by Mac McNabb
Are you having issues with your brakes squeaking? Is it time for a replacement or are they fairly new?

Let's start with the possibility that they need to be replaced. Often the manufacturer of your brake pad will add metal clips that cause squealing or squeaking to occur when the pads are worn. If this seems to be the case, time for new brakes. Here is a quick part list of what you will need:
Hawk
PADS.  You need to select a pad that works well for how you drive.

Semi Metallic:   more aggressive and more stopping power, but more noise and dust.
Examples:  Hawk HPS Street Sport, ATE Original Premium One
                                          Satisfied GranSport GS6
Ceramic:          less dust and noise, but not as aggressive bite and stopping power.
Examples:  Akebono Pro ACT, ATE Premium One, Hawk Performance Ceramic

ROTORS.   More than likely you will need rotors. It is recommended that you do not turn your rotors, but replace with new ones. A rotor's effectiveness is based on dispersing heat, and taking any metal away will diminish its ability to do such.

Solid:               Normal driving to autocross racing (parking lot with cones/markers)
                        Centric, Cryo-Stop, Brembo
Slotted:           Extremely aggressive driving to road racing. (large, repeated speed changes)
ATE, Power Slot, Power Slot Cryo, Brembo, DBAPower Slot

FLUID.  If it has been 50+ thousand miles or you drive your vehicle hard, you may consider flushing your fluid. If you fluid looks like coffee or tea at the caliper end, time to flush.

So if you are the type of person that decides to change the brakes on your BMW 335i and are looking for an added edge, this is a project you can do! Remember when you upgraded to the Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tire? Choosing the right brakes will make the same difference for stopping as the difference the right tire makes for cornering!

BMW Wheels and More

Tuesday, January 19, 2010 by Tire Rack Team
Pretty cars need pretty wheels. Or, to take it from another perspective—high performance vehicles benefit from aftermarket wheels to enhance tire performance and handling. But still, they do make a car look really good. The 2009 135i Coupe below features 18" O.Z. Racing Allegerita HLT wheels in an anthracite finish. The following BMW wheels will look just as good:

ASA GT1 (Bright Silver Paint)
Breyton Race GTS-R (Black with Red Stripe)
moda MD7 (Machined with Anthracite Accent)

Now, search by vehicle in our Upgrade Garage to get a visual representation of what different BMW rims might look like on your vehicle. You'll also get the opportunity to see matching BMW tires.

And you might not want to stop there. The Upgrade Garage helps you search our entire inventory of suitable products, like BMW brake pads and BMW suspension upgrades. Are your BMW shock absorbers absorbing enough bounce? Feeling every bump in the road? New BMW shocks might be just what the doctor...or, mechanic...ordered.

Brembo Brake Pads

Monday, January 4, 2010 by Tire Rack Team

In 1961, Brembo took the brake market with their knack for design, development and production. To this day, they lead the industry with racing and aftermarket brake components and systems—which is why Brembo brakes appear as Original Equipment components on some of the world's finest passenger cars from the likes of BMW, Porsche, Ferrari and more.

In addition, Brembo brake pads have helped a variety of racing teams (from Formula 1 to CART, NASCAR, FIA World Rally and Superbike organizations) take home the coveted checkered flag.

This level of performance satisfaction is available to you as well. Whether you want to improve your current braking system, or possibly upgrade to an enhanced aftermarket package, Brembo can help. Just search Tire Rack's inventory of brake components by vehicle to see which Brembo products are right for you.

Ceramic replacement brake pads can help keep your wheels clean.

Wednesday, July 8, 2009 by Gary Stanley
Many BMW owners find their wheels covered in brake dust after only a couple hundred miles of driving. Waxing your wheels can help, but a better solution to consider is installing a set of replacement ceramic brake pads, like the Hawk Performance Ceramic pads

While they do not have quite the level of initial 'bite' as the OE pads, they produce noticeably less dust and a lighter colored dust. I use these pads on my 1995 BMW M3 along with Brembo rotors and I love them.

Key Features & Benefits of Hawk Performance Ceramic Brake Pads

  • Ultra-low dust
  • Improved braking over O.E.
  • Stable friction output
  • Extremely quiet
  • Extended pad life
  • Increased rotor life
