The van came with the Michelin LX4's which wore out at 40k. Was very happy with the feel of the Michelins in all conditions except for the snow in which they were dreadful. I use Blizzaks in the winter on dedicated wheels. Purchased the RT43's to replace the LX4's thinking that spring was here and wouldn't you know it, we get hit with a snow/ice storm. The RT43's were quite good in the snow/ice on brand new tires although I prefer a dedicated snow tire for the van.

For regular driving the RT43's are close to the Michelins but I prefer the feel of the Michelins. However, given the price differential between a new set of LX4's (or Defenders) and the all around capability of the RT43's plus favorable reviews, these tires get high marks and were worth a try. If they last 50K for this van which has a reputation for eating up tires, it is a no brainer. If they don't last, back to the Michelins.

As far as fuel economy is concerned, I think that the Michelins are better but time will tell.

Choosing Between Performance Winter / Snow Tires and Studless Ice & Snow Tires

Monday, March 17, 2014 by Gary Stanley

As a moderator of several forums, I have received many questions on snow tires this winter. Recently, a customer had a question about choosing between Studless Ice & Snow tires and Performance Winter / Snow tires:

I’m getting ready to order winter tires and wheels. My concern is that here in Denver, we can have big changes in temperatures. It’s not uncommon to be able to wear short sleeves during February and March, while the ski resorts are getting pounded less than 80 miles away. Given the temperature range, are there any brands I should stay away from that get squirmy when it gets warmer? 95% of my driving is in the Denver area. I only have two clients in the foothills just west of town.

Here was my response to his question:

Most of the tires in the Studless Ice & Snow category like the Bridgestone Blizzak WS70, Continental ExtremeWinterContact and Michelin X-Ice Xi3 will have slower steering response in warmer temperatures, and thus, feel a little squirmy. Of these choices, the Michelin X-Ice Xi3 feels the least squirmy, but would still give you outstanding snow and ice traction for the times you have to drive on snow-covered roads.

If you move to a Performance Winter / Snow tire like the Bridgestone Blizzak LM-32 or Dunlop SP Winter Sport 4D, you'll find that these tires have more responsive handling even in warmer temperatures. Unfortunately, there's a noticeable step down in snow and ice traction when compared to Studless Ice & Snow tires.

Are you trying to make a similar decision? You may want to lean towards one of the more aggressive snow tires like those listed above if one or more of the following are true :

  • Your geographical area gets heavy snowfall and/or lake-effect snow.
  • You are often driving on packed snow and ice.
  • You are willing to give up some dry grip and steering response for maximum winter traction.
  • You are a newer driver or want more confidence when driving in winter conditions.

Choosing between these two performance categories may be difficult and is mostly a personal preference choice for the trade-off between snow traction and dry road handling. When making your decision, keep in mind what are the worst conditions you'll experience. This is the time when you will need traction the most!  You can read about my experience with winter tires by reading, "My Story on Winter Tires."

We went from a 4wd Jeep to a 2wd Jetta the day before we got our first big snowfall of the season. Blizzak WS70 tires on my Jetta took me places in snow I would go to only in my Jeep. It gave my wife a level of confidence of driving I have never seen in her before in her 15 years of winter driving. There is a lot of talk about the tire being loud, which I don't find it to be a loud tire. Regardless, if it was or gets loud, it would be the trade off of having superior traction in harsh environments. The tires handle the wet and standing water very well. The steering response is good, but not great. Another trade off for having superior traction when you need it. -you don't buy winter tires for steering response, you buy them for traction in the worst environments. Amazing tire.

We live in the :snow belt" of New Hampshire. Not only do we see snowfalls measured in feet, but blowing snow, sleet and freezing rain is all too common. I've owned all the "popular" brands that promise the world, and charge about the same. I was disgusted in the hype when the performance was falling so far short of what was promised.

Then I bought the General Altimax Arctics. After the very first snowfall, my wife and I realized these low-priced snow tires were different. We both smiled as we trekked up and down snow covered hills and valleys with ease. The grip was incredible. As we continued with the Altimax Arctics, we found them really well-mannered on the bare streets and highways as well.

Fast forward 3 years to January 2013. A major snowstorm was predicted for the evening of the New England Patriots Playoff Game. My wife, kids & I left home to attend the Playoffs Party at friends of ours at the opposite end of the road. When we left our heated garage, the were 4" of fresh, heavy wet snow already on the ground. As we headed home later that evening, the snow was now at about 8", with no snow plow in-sight. Since we live at the top of the hill, the family set-out to travel home. I has a lot of confidence in the tires, but thought there was no way we would make it home, UPHILL THE ENTIRE RIDE, with the road not plowed. Not only did these tires get us there, they climbed the hill in our driveway as well! This is after clocking 25,000 miles on them.

We cannot say enough about these tires. We have since switched to General Tires for our other cars as well (Acura TL-s and BMW 330ci convertible.

IF YOU NEED SNOWS, YOU CANNOT GO WRONG WITH THESE GENERAL ALTIMAC ARCTICS! Sorry Blizzak's. Sorry Nokian Hakapalitas. Sorry Good Year & Michelin. General is tops in the snow!

So I just bought this car and I needed winter tires badly, and I had them studded for extra peace of mind when I came here to tire rack and bought a winter tire package with steel wheels as these are just for winter and don't need fancy wheels covered in snow and crap all winter. I installed these very recently and first impression were good from the looks in person. I took them for a drive as soon as I installed them with our roads being completely covered in packed snow on plowed roads and 4-7 inches of powder on unplowed roads. We have recently received 18 inches of snow in the last 3 days and these tires take it all on without issue. The only time I had to slow down was when the front bumper was hitting the fresh powder on the roads (6 inches deep powder) and was blowing up and covering my windshield and I couldn't see. I stopped several times on snow covered hills and my car just walked op the hill without issue. Being located in Watertown, NY we get a lot of lake effect snow and it can hit at a moments notice and I spent the most part of my day testing theses tires out. Stopping was easily done as long as you don't just mash on the brakes as to be expected with any tire the ABS kicked in but still stopped controllably. Deep snow wasn't an issue, some icy roads are easily manageable, packed snow covered roads were a cinch and I really enjoyed driving in the fowl weather with these tires. No white knuckles for this guy just ease of travel as I was back to feeling safe and confident behind the wheel with these shoes on the car. Now my car has quite a bit of torque for a Front Wheel Drive vehicle that I was concerned about but the traction control worked well and the tires gripped well. These tires were cheapest offered for my car and I was skeptical as I usually go for blizzaks but these I think perform at the same level easily. I would buy these again without worry and knowing they are lower priced than the other competitors just made it easy to choose

The Subaru's all-wheel drive probably played a big part but these Pirellis are so far the best winter tires I've tried. Even better than Bridgestone Blizzaks that I've had on other Subarus, which themselves were excellent winter tires. The Pirellis have fantastic grip on packed snow and slush. The only time I experienced slight wheel spin was on glare ice. I also commend Tire Rack on their quickness of delivery. It usually took a few days on previous orders but this time I placed my order early afternoon one day and UPS delivered the following day. Can't get any better than that.

Bought a set of Blizzaks for my daughter's New Beetle in November. Her first reaction was, these tires are great and I don't slide or spin anymore when it rains. Then she drove in the snow and was thrilled that the car ahead of her was spinning wheels trying to get up a hill and she didn't slide or spin once, just went right up the hill. With the winter we've had here in Maryland, this was the perfect winter to have a set of dedicated winter tires. And if SHE notices the difference, they have to be an incredible tire for winter driving. We will go back to all-seasons for spring, summer and fall, but these tires will be on my "snow" vehicles from December through March every year.

2010 4wd Colorado, rural Vermont but plenty of interstate driving too.... These were summer tires which were alternated with Blizzak DM-V1's for the winter. About 15K miles and about 8/32" tread left. Very dependable, quiet, good tracking and solid tires (but not for wintertime use, at all). I was completely satisfied and don't hesitate to recommend for routine applications.

Purchased these tires thru TireRack to replace the P Zero Nero's on the X3 when I bought it used. (96K miles, now at 103K after 4 months!) We took the X on a 1200-mile road trip with the Pirellis still on it, then changed to the PA31s just before the winter driving season. (Oregon allows AWD passenger vehicles with M&S tires to opt out of chains when otherwise required, but I wanted new, deep tread to feel comfortable!) Driving away from the tire shop after the changeover, the difference in the feel became apparent at the curb, pulling onto the street/highway. Literally. The ride with the M Sport package was expected to be firm, even downsized to 235/50-18, but with the Pirellis it was still pretty jarring. This tire was instantly more comfortable, both from a ride and noise standpoint. Road trip to San Diego (2000 miles R/T) was very smooth, and the tires were equally at home at 80 on the freeway and through sweeping curves. Absolutely no tramlining on grooved pavement, which we hit several times on that trip. The first snow of the year was followed by very cold air, which kept snow on the ground for a week -- very unusual for this area, but a great chance to try out the tire and the AWD on the X3. Both excellent in over 6" of snow. Not Blizzaks, to be sure, but I was pleasantly surprised with test stops, up to activating the ABS. Haven't measured tread depth after 6K miles but still look and feel very good. I was nervous about buying Kumho for this demanding an application, but have since bought a set for my son's Subaru, and will consider for other vehicles as well. Pretty unbeatable for the money.

As a result we get much snow EVERY winter. These are the BEST snow tires I have ever owned. I have Blizzaks on my AWD car due to the fact I could not get the right size in the Altimax. The Blizzaks are good, but these are that much better. Do yourself a favor---these are less expensive than most, will wear well and will make an AWD vehicle a true "snow beast"!

Great winter tire. Really happy with them on my wife's '08 328xi (AWD). Previously had the WS60's on an older 328i (RWD).

Like the WS60's (and other winter tires in general) they are a bit soft in the corners & a bit noisy at highway speed in dry conditions. But you remember why you bought them when the snow falls!

Would definitely buy these again.
