On-/Off-Road All-Terrain All-Stars in 285/70R17

Thursday, August 2, 2012 by Ben Rooney

The 285/70R17 size is popular on larger trucks and SUVs. These tall (approximately 33") and wide (about 11.5") tires look good on large, rugged vehicles. For drivers who use their trucks for both everyday travel and off-pavement excursions, an On-/Off-Road All-Terrain tire is often the best solution.

The respected veteran of the group is the BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO. This tire has been around longer than I have been in the tire business, and is trusted by drivers who need strong traction on loose surfaces along with everyday drivability. In 285/70R17, this option comes in the heavy-rated load ranges D and E.

Michelin's LTX A/T2 is the most street-friendly tire in this category. It gives legitimate all-terrain capability along with some of the best road manners in the class. If you log a lot of road miles, but still need your truck to tackle challenging surfaces at times, this tire is a good match. AT/2 tires have a load range of D in this size.

Our current leader in customer surveys is the Firestone Destination A/T. A set of these tires are what I often recommend to customers because of their excellent combination of traction, price and drivability. New releases sometimes start out higher in the survey rankings, but the Firestone has managed time and again to re-take the top spot. They come in both a heavy-duty load range E, and a standard load P-Metric version for 1/2 ton trucks and SUVs.
