Bring Back Style to Your Mercedes-Benz with ASA Type 8 Wheels

Wednesday, August 3, 2011 by Cy Chowattukunnel
ASA Type 8 Chrome PlatedAlthough black, gray and machined finish have become popular wheel colors, they may not be the ideal match for your Mercedes-Benz. Chrome, especially on a black, navy blue or white Mercedes has a very proper look.

While Mercedes' cars are built to last, even a meticulously maintained and detailed Benz may be lacking because of its pitted, scratched or peeling chrome wheels. Peeling chrome can be a factor for those annoying air leaks.

If you've decided it's time to fix your wheel problems, take a look at the ASA Type 8. The wheel is the standard Mercedes 5-lug 8 hole design. (This design is often referred to as an 8 Hole because it's a flush disc with 8 oval-shaped holes around the perimeter).

It's available in silver and chrome finishes, with the option of using the Mercedes-Benz O.E. center cap. Adding a new set of tires to a wheel purchase to create a Tire & Wheel Package can also give your Mercedes a new look while receiving all necessary hardware including lugs, center caps and centering rings at no additional charge. Professionally mounted and balanced, a package arrives ready to install. Read 'How to Install Your Wheel & Tire Package" for more information.

If you are someone who drives approximately 5,000 miles annually at or slightly above the speed limit and having a tire that is quiet is one of your top priorities, then consider the Bridgestone Turanza Serenity or the Michelin Primacy MXV4. Both tires are quiet with good wet traction. The Bridgestone has slightly better wet grip while the Michelin tire offers better steering response. If you prefer the Michelin Primacy MXV4 and want them with a set of 15" Chrome ASA Type 8 wheels, they can arrive in Miami, Florida, for example, mounted and balanced for approximately $1326.* If considering an upgrade in sizing to the 16" version of the wheel, the total is roughly $1551.*

Got Fahrvergnügen?

Working at Tire Rack, I have the opportunity to talk to many customers and fellow drivers, including Volkswagen owners. With two VWs sitting in my garage, I share their enthusiasm for this particular brand.

On a recent call with Paul from Baltimore, we were talking about the 16x7.5 ASA GT1 (Bright Silver Paint) wheels and 215/55ZR16 Continental ExtremeContact DWS tires on his 2005 VW Passat GLS TDI Wagon. He mentioned that instead of using the standard 64mm ASA center cap, he took the Original Equipment, 65mm VW center cap and sanded it down to fit properly on the wheel. Wanting to see how it turned out, I asked Paul to send me a photo. Take a look at his work:

ASA GT5 20" Wheels on my Infiniti G37

Friday, May 27, 2011 by Gary Stanley
Our photo studio recently asked me if they could use my 2009 Infiniti G37X coupe to feature in our new Inside Track magazine publication. For the cover of the issue, they wanted to take a photo of my vehicle in our in-house photo studio with a set of 20" ASA GT5 Wheels. Needless to say, I said "yes!"

 ASA
We have carried the ASA brand of wheels for over a decade now. I've always had good experience and feedback from this brand of wheels, so I expect this wheel to be strong and reliable in addition to being so attractive. The GT5 wheel itself is painted black with a black lip. What makes the wheel unique is that the inner rim barrel portion of the wheel is machined silver instead of the more typical machined lip appearance. Check out a closeup to see what I mean.

If I ever had doubts about how black wheels looked on red cars, I no longer do! It's too bad I didn't get to keep them. But that's just my opinion. What do you think?

How do I know which wheel has the best strength?

Wednesday, January 12, 2011 by Mac McNabb
Wheel manufacturing methods take you into metallurgy and methods of casting and forging. This information can be very helpful in selecting the right wheels for their intended purpose.

Steel Wheel

Method: Stamped sheet steel
Purpose: Simple winter and year-round driving in a touring driving style without aggressive driving
Limitations: Will not mount race tires or autocross tires, not safe for autocross or road racing

Gravity Cast Wheel

Method: Molten metal is poured into a cast and is forced into the mold via gravity
Purpose: Full spectrum use (touring, winter, semi-aggressive and mild autocross)
Limitations: None, but not as strong as high levels of cast or forged

Pressurized Cast Wheel (usually with surface treatment)

Method: Metal under pressure to help keep air bubbles out
Purpose: Standard touring to aggressive driving with racing included
Limitations: None, strongest of the cast
Example: Some O.Z. Racing, ASA, some BBS, moda

Forged Wheel

Method: Forced piece of metal, sometimes semi-molten into a mold
Purpose: Highest strength for the weight, so usually in extreme performance applications
Limitations: Your pocketbook.
Example: Some O.Z. Racing, some BBS

Does this all matter? Wheels are an aesthetic statement as much as a functional part of our vehicle, but since most of us do not race, a forged wheel, or even pressurized cast wheel that carries a higher price tag may not be necessary.

Choose which wheels you like on your vehicle. Pick two to three options and from there investigate which of your favorites are constructed using the best methods. Pick by look first if you are a casual driver; because for you and your all-season tires, construction won't really affect your daily commute.

If you are racing and spend significant time on the track, use this info to help determine which wheels will hold up for you at the limits.

Lost Center Caps?

Wednesday, September 8, 2010 by Chad Hocker
This morning I received an email from a customer who had purchased Sport Edition F2 wheels for his 2003 Ford Windstar and needed some replacement center caps. A quick search online or a phone call and Tire Rack can get you what you need. Here's how the conversation went:

Question
I bought a set of 16-inch Sport Edition F2 wheels with Yokohama tires. The center cap has fallen off one of the wheels and was lost on some highway in California. Is it possible to get the center cap that says Sport Edition on it??

Answer
Yes, we can get you a cap. They are priced at $6 each plus shipping. Give me a call and we'll get your cap on the way or you can order Sport Edition Center Caps online. What you need is at the bottom of the list (sorry, no photo is available at this time).

If you have Sport Edition wheels or an ASA wheel or any other wheel we carry, check out our website to find your center cap or any other optional hardware you may need.

Imput your vehicle year make and model then select the wheel you need the hardware for and click the optional harware tab to select the center caps.

One of our most popular wheels has been the ASA AR1, available in diameters from 15" to 20" for many vehicles. The AR1 emulates the classic mesh style popular in Europe for Mercedes-Benz, BMW and other vehicles; however, this wheel is for BMW applications only. The wheel will accept Original Equipment center caps to give the wheel a "factory" appearance. Rivets and a machined lip add a modular look as well.

The AR1 is available in chrome, black and silver finishes, and is a great wheel to upgrade the appearance of your vehicle!

The Devil is in the Details

Thursday, May 13, 2010 by Luke Pavlick
Did you decide to get a new set of wheels for your toy? You know to dress her up a little. Well, it doesn't matter if you went with a big name like BBS or OZ Racing or went with something more budget friendly like an ASA or Verde style I know you want to get the most 'pop' out of your  purchase. So, here's a couple of easy tips to help you get the most impact.

If your new wheels have an open design, think about the surrounding parts. Here's a couple of examples I found roaming our parking lot earlier today.

A good looking Kazera KZ-H wheel with some Sumitomo tires recently installed on a Subaru Legacy but those brake calipers detract from the car's appearance even with the upgraded wheel.

How hard would it have been to grab some G2 caliper paint, which is available in 11 different colors, to clean things up a little and add a little flash?

Something like these OZ Racing Superleggera III wheels with Pirellis on a Ford Transit.

If the flashy red caliper is not your thing, here are some SSR wheels on a 350Z with the calipers painted black and some slotted performance brake rotors.
There are many little details which are often overlooked like valve stems and center caps. Many wheels even have optional center caps for a more personalized look. Metal valve stems are another option to improve the overall appearance of your new wheels.

To take things another step further you can also run high-end lugs from KICS or Ray's Engineering.

As they say 'the devil is in the details.'

My name is Luke Pavlick and I am a car guy.

What is "Plus Sizing" and what are the benefits?

Thursday, April 29, 2010 by Mason Rush
Plus sizing is an option allowing drivers to customize the appearance and performance of their vehicle by mounting lower profile tires on larger diameter wheels. One-inch greater wheel diameter is referred to as plus-one, two inches is plus-two... and so on. Using a lower profile tire with a greater diameter rim allows the overall diameter to remain about the same, giving your vehicle a unique look with a new wheel and tire package.  You can find a complete lists all the wheels available for your vehicle at: Wheel Brands. Enter your vehicles make, model, and year in the field on the left and we will show you all the wheels our engineers have found to fit your vehicle. We will also give you the option to find tires in the correct size for your car or truck.  Here you will find new releases from OZ, BBS, Breyton, ASA and others. Find something your like ..... call me at 800-428-8355 x:692. Mason

Consider ASA rims when outfitting your 2010 Audi S4.

Thursday, April 8, 2010 by Tire Rack Team
The Audi S4 is pretty easy on the eyes, but if you upgrade to aftermarket wheels, it can be even more impressive—and who doesn't like to turn a few heads driving down the road?! We chose a set of ASA wheels for the 2010 above. ASA GT1 wheels, to be specific. At Tire Rack, we work with a lot of wheel manufacturers and ASA always comes through with high quality wheels. They're exotic, elegant and exciting. Much like the Audi itself.

Use our Upgrade Garage to see a visual representation of these wheels on your vehicle. You can also choose from other ASA wheels, too. And if you're really feeling the aftermarket itch, you can check out Audi tires from some of our reputable tire manufacturers, too.

BMW Wheels and More

Tuesday, January 19, 2010 by Tire Rack Team
Pretty cars need pretty wheels. Or, to take it from another perspective—high performance vehicles benefit from aftermarket wheels to enhance tire performance and handling. But still, they do make a car look really good. The 2009 135i Coupe below features 18" O.Z. Racing Allegerita HLT wheels in an anthracite finish. The following BMW wheels will look just as good:

ASA GT1 (Bright Silver Paint)
Breyton Race GTS-R (Black with Red Stripe)
moda MD7 (Machined with Anthracite Accent)

Now, search by vehicle in our Upgrade Garage to get a visual representation of what different BMW rims might look like on your vehicle. You'll also get the opportunity to see matching BMW tires.

And you might not want to stop there. The Upgrade Garage helps you search our entire inventory of suitable products, like BMW brake pads and BMW suspension upgrades. Are your BMW shock absorbers absorbing enough bounce? Feeling every bump in the road? New BMW shocks might be just what the doctor...or, mechanic...ordered.
