Goodyear vs. Michelin Truck Tire Comparison

Thursday, May 16, 2013 by Ben Rooney

In the first installment of my Goodyear versus Michelin comparison, I focused on car tires. Now, let's take a look at the truck and SUV tires offered by these two heavyweights of the tire industry.

Category: Crossover/SUV Touring All-Season

Contenders: Goodyear Assurance CS TripleTred All-Season vs. Michelin Latitude Tour

Verdict: Goodyear wins this close match-up with superior traction in wet and wintry weather. The same aggressive tread that helps it gain better traction in the worst weather conditions comes with a trade-off in ride and noise comfort. Customers who value a luxury ride and do most of their driving in moderate climates may find that the Michelin suits them better.

Category: Highway All-Season

Contenders: Goodyear Wrangler RT/S vs. Michelin LTX M/S2

Verdict: The Michelin LTX M/S2 wins this category by a wide margin. It's consistently rated near the top of the category for an excellent all-around combination of ride, traction and treadwear.

Category: On-/Off-Road All-Terrain

Contenders: Goodyear Wrangler SilentArmor vs. Michelin LTX A/T2

Verdict: Michelin's LTX A/T2 squeaks ahead with better balancing, road manners and longevity with traction on loose surfaces. The Goodyear has a more aggressive tread and would be a more popular choice for those who spend more time off the pavement.

Category: Off-Road Maximum Traction

Contenders: Goodyear Wrangler MT/R with Kevlar vs. Michelin (none)

Verdict: The highly capable Goodyear wins this one unopposed.

Roundup: In this very close match-up, Michelin wins two categories, while Goodyear also wins two. These categories were extremely close and selection often come down to a driver's preference.

This was my second winter with the arctics on my tdi sportwagon. The tires performed flawlessly all winter, for the price you pay you get more for your money than other more expensive tires. If you live in the snowbelt area and do not run seperate winter wheels and tires your only kidding yourself for foul weather performance! I have been running seperate winter/ summer wheel and tire packages from the tire rack since the late 80's! Great people selling great products at reasonable prices!

Soft compounds equals awesome traction. It also equals short tread life.
These tires are great in dry and in wet. The S-Drives definitely inspire confidence in all weather and around every corner. We absolutely love these tires.

Just be prepared to replace these at 20000 to 25000 miles or so if you drive like me.

These tires replaced a set of half-worn Michelin Pilot Alpin PA3 tires (I picked up a puncture in one of the PA3s and couldn't find a replacement, hence the half-worn). Compared to the PA3s, the Xi3s have similar wet weather grip and noticeably lower (but still acceptable for this type of tire) dry grip. Unfortunately, I can't comment on snow or ice performance because I never had a chance to try the Xi3s in the snow. The biggest difference was in dry weather feel - feedback was significantly muted with the Xi3s and there is also significant 'tread squirm' with the Xi3s. If I had to give each a subjective score relative to a summer tire (using a Goodyear Asymmetric as the reference summer tire), I would give the PA3s an 8 and the Xi3s a 4 - there really is a huge difference between the two. Ride comfort and noise levels are quite good with the Xi3s - a little better than the PA3s.

I have not rotated the original Michelin Cross Terrain tires on my Toyota 4Runner SR since purchased in July 2004. Still tread left on front tires, but back ones have very little but with over 100,000 miles I couldn't expect much more. The Spare is brand new (never on the ground). But with age-related weather cracks, not good to put it on the ground now. Not sure whether the Road Noise is because of the tires or the age of the 4Runner. I thought about driving it until the first flat, then buy 4 Michelins. But driving on turnpikes/freeways a lot, I've decided that wouldn't be very smart. So I will order Michelins from Tirerack.com. Tried putting actual miles of 100,465 but the form won't let me.

Exceptional wet weather traction
In 5-6 in of snow, nearly as good as any snow tire I have driven with...ie wont be buying any snow tires.

In summary, the only tire I will have on an SUV going forward!

Best Performance Tires for Wet Weather

Thursday, May 9, 2013 by Marshall Wisler

Unfortunately, not all days can be sunny and dry. While we all experience varying weather patterns, some people see more wet weather than others. If you live in Florida, or another state known for heavy and frequent rains, you may choose a tire that performs well in the wet above all else.

If this sounds like the conditions you experience, take a look at my favorite Max Performance Summer tires that feature wet weather performance, yet make no compromises in the dry.

The Continental ExtremeContact DW features a large amount of tread void that does extremely well in the wet. Looking at its pattern will display a large amount of water channels to aid in hydroplane resistance. While one of our strongest tires in the wet, the ExtremeContact DW can also hold its own in the dry and has long since been a favorite amongst consumers looking for performance and value.

Michelin's Pilot Super Sport has been a standout in nearly every test we've done since it was released last year. This tire tends to be one of the fastest Max Performance Summer tires in the dry, and also has exceptional balance when the going gets slippery. While the tire doesn't quite have as much tread void as the Continental, it's an exceptional performer and is very composed at the traction limit.

April 22, 2013

I used these April 21, 2013 at a Vancouver, British Columbia autocross event. The weather ranged from sunny to cloudy, damp to rain, and the tires stuck like glue in all of it. I was expecting them to not do great in wet conditions, but as long there is no standing water/puddles, the tires are great. They do hydroplane above 90 km/h in standing water, but I've had slightly worn all seasons that performed worse. There is a lot of tire noise at speeds below 50 km/h, but it gets less noticeable at higher speeds. The ride quality is also not great, but high noise and low ride quality is expected in a tire with capabilities as high as this one. The tread wear from autocross appears to be better than the Kumho Ecsta 4x all-seasons I used in very wet winter autocross events. I highly recommend these tires for anyone looking for a new autocross tire.

These tires were on a 2010 Honda Odyssey. Tire pressure was checked regularly and tires were rotated religiously at 5,000 miles. I really expected better traction and wear from these tires. I would not purchase these tires again. Wet weather traction was fair at best and light snow traction was again only fair at best.

I like in North/Central New Jersey and previously drove in and around PA. I do a lot of highway driving now. I would describe myself as a "spirited" driver. I have 70K on these tires. They are the only tires I have ever purchased for my car after the OEM tires wore at 35K and my car has 105K on it today. I just took my Civic to the dealer last night and the service manager at the Honda dealer told me my tires were basically new at 6-7s. So I would highly recommend these tires. They are reasonably priced and worth it. I drive in snow, ice, rain and sleet. I never miss work for weather so I drive in some tight situations. The tires haven't let me down.

Goodyear vs. Michelin Brand Showdown

Thursday, April 18, 2013 by Ben Rooney

Two of the most recognizable and respected brands in the industry are Michelin and Goodyear. Both brands have their fans, both brands have their detractors, but ask any sampling of people in the United States to name a couple of tire brands and Goodyear and Michelin will probably dominate the responses. A common question that we receive is: "Which brand is better?" The answer depends on the tire category and the specific needs of the driver, but I'll try to give an overview by comparing the top tires from each brand by category. This comparison focuses on categories for cars.

Category: Passenger All-Season

Contenders: Goodyear Assurance TripleTred All-Season vs. Michelin Energy Saver A/S

Verdict: The Goodyear has the advantage in bad weather traction. Michelin's Energy Saver A/S optimizes rolling resistance to slightly enhance fuel economy. Both have very good treadwear and rate well in our customer surveys, but the Goodyear is currently higher. Two strong contenders, however the Goodyear wins with superior traction in bad weather.

Category: Standard Touring All-Season

Contenders: Goodyear (none) vs. Michelin Defender

Verdict: No contest here as Michelin has the number one tire in the class and Goodyear has no entry. Michelin wins by default. Goodyear would need a heroic new entry to unseat the current king of this class.

Category: Grand Touring All-Season

Contenders: Goodyear Assurance ComforTred Touring vs. Michelin Primacy MXV4

Verdict: These two tires are both excellent entries into the category. I've driven both of these and prefer the Michelin, which also has slightly higher survey results over a larger number of miles. This round goes to Michelin.

Category: High Performance All-Season

Contenders: Goodyear Eagle GT vs. Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S

Verdict: The Eagle GT is solid but the Pilot Exalto A/S remains one of the best all-around tires in the category. It blends ride, handling and traction in a wide variety of conditions. The Pilot Exalto A/S takes this round for Michelin as well.

Category: Ultra High Performance All-Season

Contenders: Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric All-Season vs. Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus

Verdict: These tires are both right in the top tier of the category. We have not tested them directly against one another, and the Goodyear is relatively new. Both earned similar results against other tires in the category in tests one year apart. This one is too close to call.

Category: Max Performance Summer

Contenders: Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 vs. Michelin Pilot Super Sport

Verdict: This is an excellent match-up of two of the newest and stickiest tires in the Max Performance Summer category. The Michelin won their head-to-head test, and having done some of the driving for the test, I agree with the results. Honorable mention to the Goodyear, which is an excellent tire in its own right, but the Pilot Super Sport is the class of the field right now.

Category: Extreme Performance Summer

Contenders: Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar G: 2 vs. Michelin (none)

Verdict: Goodyear makes the Supercar G: 2 in very few sizes, but does enough to take the category unopposed. Any tire that looks this cool merits some points in a brand shoot by virtue of the halo effect it brings to the brand:

Roundup:

  • Goodyear wins two categories: Passenger All-Season and Extreme Performance Summer.
  • Michelin wins four categories: Standard Touring All-Season, Grand Touring All-Season, High Performance All Season and Max Performance Summer.

Whether you're a Goodyear or Michelin fan, both brands provide great options. Choose the tire from the brand you like that best suits how and where you drive.

Have only 2,000 miles on these tires, but so far so good. They are amazing in the cold dry and have gotten me through a huge blizzard this year. Ultimate snow traction is less than studless tires but the tradeoff is well worth it for the dry weather performance. I would definitely recommend to other C63 drivers.

After putting 51,000 miles on my OEM tires (Hankook Optimo H431), it was time to replace them. I must say that I was very pleased with the Hankook tires and had always thought I would go back with them. But when the time came, I took a look at every option that was available. What really sold me on the Continental PureContact tire was the warranty, UTQG, and price. All three points were much better then the OEM Hankook tires. Also, I opted to size up from P225 to P235 which gives me alittle taller and wider tire with abit more sidewall for ride comfort. While I might have lost alittle dry cornering from the OEM tires, I have gained in ride comfort, less road noise, better traction in rain or snow, and I believe alonger lasting tire. I am a VERY spirited driver, and I must say that these tires give me confidence in all weather conditions. I'm already saying that when it comes time to replace these tires that I'll buy them again.

We put these tires on the car at 700 miles. They were a nice improvement over the stock Integrities. The tires were quieter and much more stable at freeway speeds. In wet weather and snow the traction was good. The tires were rotated every 5-7000 miles with an alignment at 15K mile.

Our driving is about 80% country roadsm 10% city and 20% highway. In spite of driving the car mostly for gas economy (in other words gently) the tires need replacement at 32K! This is a serious disappointment. For this reason I can not recommend these tires. Our Honda Odyssey has Yokohama Avid H4s that have worn great so far in comparison.

Went from the OEM 225/45/18 Hankook Optimo H431 on OEM 18x8 to 245/35/19 Michelin PSS on 19x8.5 wheels. I'm very ocd when it comes to proper air pressure. I use nitrogen and run 38psi, 3psi over oem to optimize for proper load rating. Even though I drive a 4-door sedan, I drive it spirited! The PSSs in my honest opinion is an incredible tire in all aspects. I use to race BMWs and Mazdas in SCCA and know a little about racing. Hence, this tire has great turn-in and allows for sustained control cornering with little push. The variable contact patch seems to just bite the harder I engage cornering and handles the car's weight transfer during cornering, maximizing lateral grip. Wet weather handling is great, however our rainy season has yet to hit us down here in central Florida. In the rain that we have had the tire does very well in both handling, hydroplaning, and breaking. I've driven on Goodyear's F1, Bridgestone's S04, and Conti's Contact DW & DWS. Looking forward to updating this review after I put some mileage on the tires. Stay tuned!

These tires are way better than OEM factory set in almost every way possible. When new, within the first 1000 miles of purchase, I took a long road trip from AZ to WA and back. These tires performed very well on this 3000 mile road trip, on forest service roads, city roads, highways, interstates and at one point a rock quarry road. Since then, I’ve put on almost 40K miles, and these tires are still very good. Road noise is great, wear has been excellent, and other than some deep mud, I’ve always felt in control of my truck in all the weather conditions these tires have seen.
I got these tires on discount at the time of purchase; I’m waiting and hoping they go back on sale or that I can find them cheaper than they currently are. I consider these tires at the edge of A/T, being a little more street than off-road. But for my driving, they’re off-road and all weather enough to do the job when needed. If I can get them a little cheaper, I’ll skin my truck in these as long as I own it.
