Michelin X-Ice Xi2 on Sale

Monday, April 30, 2012 by Ben Rooney

Many sizes of Michelin's popular X-Ice Xi2 tire are currently available at closeout prices. Buying these winter / snow tires out of season can result in significant savings. Not all sizes are on closeout, but many of them are marked down substantially; which means the savings now will really come in handy when winter returns.

This Studless Ice and Snow winter / snow tire is for the drivers of coupes, sedans and family vans that want to combine enhanced ice and snow traction with predictable wet and dry road handling. Most X-Ice Xi2 tires meet Michelin's Green X standard for low rolling resistance that confirms the tire's contribution to lowering vehicle fuel consumption and emissions of CO2 gases. The tire is designed to tackle the coldest winter driving conditions around the world. Michelin X-Ice Xi2 tires meet the industry's severe snow service requirements and are branded with the mountain/snowflake symbol. For more information on the symbol's meaning read "How to Confirm a Winter Performer."

Snow platform indicators (the equivalent of "snow wear bars") are molded into the tire's tread grooves to inform the driver when ice and snow traction will be reduced as the X-Ice Xi2's tread reaches the point where the remaining tread depth becomes less effective in deep snow. Due to the traction capabilities of the X-Ice Xi2, Michelin recommends using this tire in sets of four to provide the best handling characteristics and tire performance.

As with all purpose-built winter / snow tires, the Michelin X-Ice Xi2 should only be used during the winter season to maximize its life span. Take advantage of this opportunity by planning ahead for next winter and saving on an excellent set of winter / snow tires.

Initial Review, 100 Miles on Tires
March 20, 2012

Great service, Ordered on Sunday, here on Tuesday! Just put them on, inflated at 40psi. As some might know, Protege 5's are "rolling death" in the rain, and it does rain a lot here in Florida. Original Dunlop SP5000 lasted 20k miles and were suicide when the roads were wet. Ran cheap Definity HX700'ds for three years with somewhat acceptable results, they really did work well for the money, but wanted a OEM size like the original Dunlops. This car has a rare tire size, glad Kumho supports it. The Definity tires, while a good value and quantum leaps better than the Dunlops in the rain, were starting to become problematic as they aged (58k miles!). The car was telling me it was time for new rubber before summer rainy season. The 4X's came highly recommended. First impressions are very positive, they are much quieter than the Definity rubber, but still need to be broken in. The Kumho's really look great on this car. A review here stated the 4X's were really harsh riding... They dont seem to be on my car, with factory stock suspension. We will see how these stack up to what I previously had as they break in. Again, superior, painless service from Tire Rack. My first purchase, will be back!

Initial Review, 35,000 Miles on Tires
April 28, 2012

These were OE on my 2008 Subaru Outback. They were serviceable but not spectacular. The ride is somewhat noisy and traction in wet or snowy conditions isn't great. They don't offer any grip on icy roads even at very low speeds with great care taken not to brake hard or steer sharply. I didn't expect them to perform as well as a dedicated winter tire but I did expect to have a little more control in light snow since they are all season tires. At 35k miles they were done. You could do worse, but for the price you could certainly do better.

UTQG Treadwear Numbers: What Do They Mean?

Friday, April 27, 2012 by Marshall Wisler

Often, I receive calls about a tire's life and the tire's relationship to its assigned UTQG treadwear indicator. UTQG numbers are assigned to indicate a tires overall level of performance and tread hardness. These numbers beginning at 0 for race products and traveling north of 800 for some of the longest lasting all-season tires, are nothing more than a general guideline to assist customers in making their correct tire purchase.

While certain performance standards are held standard, such as Traction Grades and Temperature Resistance, UTQG treadwear numbers are published by the manufacturer based upon their test findings of a tire's life expectancy. It's important to note that not all manufacturer's standards are equal and similar ratings may lead to different real world results between similar product types.

On a large basis, however, most manufacturer's figures are surprisingly accurate. To gain a better understanding of the process, take a look at a few of our popular performance categories beginning with soft compounds and working our way up.

Track & Competition DOT

These tires offer maximum grip in race environments where performance is key and treadlife is sacrificed. In order to be competitive, these tires feature a soft tread compound that tends to be very adhesive. These soft tires wear much faster than a standard street tire and aren't recommend for street use. Take a look at the Hoosier A6, a popular autocross tire to see an example. Note this tire's low UTQG figure of 40.

Max Performance Summer

This category features high-performance tires designed for street use. Although not nearly as soft as the race products outlined above, they're at home in a performance environment. This is an optimal choice for a driver looking for acceptable levels of treadwear combined with a high-performing grip level. Even though these tires offer much more flexibility, I'm reminded of an economics lesson: There is no free lunch. The longest wearing Max Performance Summer tires will not outlast a good performing all-season option. Sometimes a driver must choose between smiles and miles. Take a look at our current top-rated summer tire, the Michelin Pilot Super Sport and its 300 indicated UTQG treadwear.

Ultra High Performance All-Season

Perhaps our most popular and best-selling category, the Ultra High Performance All-Season, promotes higher treadwear in exchange for some loss in ultimate dry grip. Although not as soft, and therefore not as sticky as the Max Performance Summer tires, these tires still place a good amount of focus on performance. This new breed of all-season tires typically lasts between 30,000-50,000 miles and allows the driver to experience practicality while also including good performance features such as a responsive sidewalls and higher speed ratings. The Bridgestone Potenza RE970AS Pole Position is currently the number one tire in this category and carries a UTQG number of 400.

Standard Touring All-Season

Tires in this category sacrifice performance in terms of ultimate dry grip to focus on maximum life and mileage. These tires are designed for conservative drivers that are looking for the best in ride, treadlife and practicality. These tires aren't meant for track use or for aggressive street driving, but often work well as purposeful all-season tires. The popular Hankook Optimo H727 is a great example of such a tire. Notice that its 700 treadwear fits this category to a tee.

Mud Tires: It's the Season

Thursday, April 26, 2012 by Alex Mouroulis

With the temperature getting warmer, it's time to get your rig ready and hit the trails! The following tires are a few of our best sellers and would be a great fit for this year's mud season.

BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM2
BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM2
Firestone Destination M/T
Firestone Destination
M/T
Yokohama Geolandar M/T Plus
Yokohama Geolandar
M/T Plus

The Mud-Terrain T/A KM2 is inspired by BFGoodrich's extremely competitive T/A Krawler competition tire. It's a much more civilized ride with very good mud-clearing capability. TriGard internal construction and chip-resistant compounds both contribute to sidewalls that resist pinch flats at low pressure and produce sidewall cords that are 33% stronger than the previous Mud-Terrain T/A KM tires.

Firestone Destination M/T tires bring a very civilized road ride for such an open and aggressive tire. The tire features UNI-T technology and provides great wet traction capability. Long Link Carbon, a special form of molecular re-engineered carbon black, helps to resist sidewall cuts and abrasions on the trails. Not only does this tire work well on the road, but its tread pattern is the most aggressive of these three options. This tire clears extremely well and really shines when digging and biting into sloppy, muddy conditions.

The Yokohama Geolandar M/T Plus features a highly directional tread pattern - a design feature the other two tires lack. This allows the tire to provide excellent hydroplaning resistance. When running oversized, extremely wide tires, the bigger footprint is very subject to lift-up in deep puddles at speed; which the directional pattern can certainly help with this issue. The less aggressive tread patterns are very effective in sandy conditions. I have been dune jumping using the Geolandar M/T Plus and it's definitely up to the challenge.

Whether you're driving on the trails, the beach, or climbing slippery rocks and boulders, don't let anything stand in your way. All three tires are up to the task!

Corners Like a MINI Cooper S and Stings Like a Scorpion: FIAT's 500 Abarth

Thursday, April 26, 2012 by Cy Chowattukunnel

When it comes to light, fast, compact European hatchbacks, the MINI Cooper S has been the only game in town. With the release of the FIAT 500 Abarth,  MINI finally has some serious competition. The 500 Abarth adds a whopping 59 hp and 72 ft. lbs. of torque compared to the FIAT 500 Sport. That's a lot of power for a 2,564 lb. car and some serious power for those front tires to handle.

If you have an Abarth on order, then you'll be counting on 195/45-16 all-seasons or the optional 205/40-17s. The 195/45-16 Original Equipment options for the vehicle are either the Grand Touring All-Season Continental ContiProContact or the High Performance All-Season Pirelli Cinturato P7 All Season. The optional 17x7 is equipped with the 205/40-17 Max Performance Summer Pirelli P Zero Nero tire.

Given the Abarth's sporty suspension and short wheelbase, factory choices may not be ideal. In my opinion, the 16" tire choices offer relatively subpar grip, while the vehicle's ride is compromised with the 17" wheels. If I had an Abarth on order, I'd select one of the 16" options and sell them to a FIAT 500 Sport owner and look at a 205/45-16 Tire & Wheel Package.

If you're looking for wheels for a 500 Abarth with a black exterior and red mirror caps and red side stripes, I'd take a look at the black painted O.Z. Racing Alleggerita HLT. For the red-colored vehicle with black mirror caps and black side stripes, the red painted Alleggerita HLT is a great choice. With a white or gray Abarth, there's a number of Alleggerita finishes that'll work.

When looking for a tire that offers great dry and wet grip, predictable handling, optimal balance between steering response and ride compliance and relatively low noise take a look at the 205/45-16 Bridgestone Potenza RE760 Sport.

16x7 4-100 37mm offset OZ Black Painted Allegerita $279*
O.Z. Racing Black Painted Alleggerita HLT $279*
16x7 4-100 37mm offset OZ Red Painted Allegerita $299*
O.Z. Racing Red Painted Alleggerita HLT $299*
205/45-16 Ultra High Performance Summer Bridgestone Potenza RE760 Sport $105*
Bridgestone Potenza RE760 Sport $105*

Mounted, balanced and ready to install, the Tire & Wheel Package including the Black Alleggerita is $1,712*, while the package with the red painted (special order color) Alleggerita is currently $1,792*.

E 'in poi, è su come Donkey Kong (It's on, it's on like Donkey Kong).

2012 FIAT 500 Abarth FAQ:

  1. Can I run 205/45-16 sized tires on my Original Equipment 16" wheels? Yes, the O.E. 16x6.5 wheels will accommodate the 205/45-16 tires.

  2. Would the Sparco Assetto Gara be a good fit for the vehicle? The wheel is a good  choice as well, however I personally like the Alleggerita design a little better. If you're open to either design, the Assetto Gara costs less and is priced at $1092* (the red painted Assetto Gara is estimated to be available in June).

  3. How do the above 4-100 wheels fit on 4-98 bolt pattern vehicle? You can install these wheels with the provided wobble bolts. Wobble bolts are bolts with floating seats. Each bolt seat moves slightly upward to accommodate the 4-100 bolt pattern.

These tires have saved my life. I wasnt a believer in winter tires untill I bought my first set. I live in a city where we're known for winters, Winterpeg. I bought my car in 08 and the all season tires that came with the car were horrible... Goodyear eagle RS A weren't gonna get me through my first winter with my car. So I decide to buy winter tires and what a experience, Hugh difference in attraction, I could bend corner easily without slipping. Great on ice, very quiet on the road. I have also bought these tires for my honda civic and I refuse to drive without have this tires.

Are my Asymmetric Tires Running Backwards?

Wednesday, April 25, 2012 by Hunter Leffel

Sumitomo HTR Z3 asymmetrical tread pattern It's very common for a customer to get very excited over the tread pattern of their newly purchased asymmetric tires. While I agree the look of the grooves would lead you to have them pointing in a downward direction during rotation, the reality is there isn't a significant enough of difference for it to matter.

With an asymmetric design you need the larger shoulder block on the outside to take the abuse during cornering, this is more important than the direction of the groove on the inboard shoulder for water evacuation. The groove channels are small enough that the water will escape to the circumferential grooves when under speed. There's an unbelievable amount of force being exerted on the tire when the leading edge hits the road. Water is going to move through those lateral grooves out to the circumferential grooves for evacuation due to the force being exerted. Those grooves must also have an angle to them. While they would work just as well if they were perpendicular to the larger circumferential grooves, the tire would be very loud. By introducing an angle, noise levels are lowered.

Testing data and feedback on the tire is based on them mounted with the outside marking facing outside. The tire will perform as intended when installed in this manner. There's no left side and right design available. The fact remains, the engineers designing these tires are achieving the performance goals with this design. You'll see this on tires from all brands using an asymmetric approach.

Listed below are some of the more popular and highly rated tires with an asymmetric design.

Michelin Pilot Super Sport

Pirelli PZero Nero All Season

Getting a lot more miles out of these than I thought. I replaced the OEM Bridgestones with these and am very happy with all aspects. They are smooth, quiet and track straight. Aggressive cornering with no squeals and a solid firm confident feel. I mounted and balanced them when new and have held balance. Alignment is still the factory setting. BMW does not recommend rotating and I haven't. Wear is even with a little less on the rear and no cupping. These are an all season and do not perform well in deep snow, even when new. If I lived in an area with consistent snowy winters (I don't) I would get a winter tire.

OEM from MINI..very, very harsh riding and loud.....bubbles started in the treads after about 25,000 which made them louder....
If all RUN-FLATS are like this...NO THANKS!!........replacing with Ultra High Performance All Season....that's what most of the other MINI drivers seem to do with great results......Bridgestones on my 911s. Michelins also with less desirable results....Conti's on the truck.....both have been great.....thought I'd try the spec tire of European sedan racing series....HANKOOK....look for that post shortly.......I would NEVER buy the tires that came on the MINI......never.

I purchased these tires for something that will work as a "Good" all season tire. They have worked awesome all winter (a Calgary winter that is). Very impressed with the handling in the snow, never spun out on any hill that was iced up. Always had traction starting at lights and stop signs. It did hydroplane in 4" deep slush at 50mph but that can be expected. Over all great all around tire for all 4 seasons.
I did find them a little spongy on corners but that could have been due to my car's required air pressure.

A supplemental review of these tires for my Saturn SC1

When these tires were new they had significantly superior deep snow traction compared to today's performance with about half of the tread worn down. I have always found and still maintain these tires have very good ice performance characteristics for an all season tire and to that end I think you'd need a dedicated winter tire to noticeably out do the ComfortTreds. Light fresh snow is still not a problem even on relatively steep hills.

One thing that troubles me is the substantial loss of wet grip once you start breaking in these tires. At 2k miles traveled the performance was great if not excellent. The 100HP Saturn could not spin these tires from a dead stop in wet conditions which was always the case for the factory Firestone FR680 tires. After about 15k miles on the tire I noticed the traction control indicator light coming on. Its not the level the FR680s were even at the FR680's best but it is troubling that with half of the tread present so much wet performance could be lost. The tires are still predictable and stable so its more of a gripe than anything.

The noise and ride quality of this tire is still exemplary. Driving a Sturn with a mostly plastic outer body I feel I have a special insight on the noise levels that just can't be asserted in all metal cars. My Saturn went from being quite noisy traveling at highway speeds to much quieter. I did not use a noise measuring device but can tell you that a cell phone conversation was not possible at 70mph beforehand where now its no problem. These tires are ridiculously noisy on grooved cement and have very odd feel on grooved pavement.

These tires probably will be replace at 50k to 60k which I feel is acceptable considering hard cornering is my favorite thing in the world. This is not a performance oriented tire. Sidewall flex is a part of the game.

I BOUGHT 4 OF THESE TIRES FROM TIRERACK LAST SUMMER AND WAITED UNTIL I HAD ABOUT 10,OOO MILES ON THESE TIRES TO GIVE YOU AN ACCURATE REVIEW. THESE ARE EXCEPTIONALY GREAT TIRES. THEY RIDE MUCH SMOOTHER THAN THE OEM CONTINENTAL TIRES. THEY ARE QUIET AND VITUALLY SHOW VERY LITTLE WEAR WITH 10K MILES. THE HANDLING AND GRIP BOTH DRY AND WET IS SUPERIOR. I DROVE 160 MILES THROUGH THE INTENSE PART OF THE OCTOBER 2011 NORTHEAST (MA-CT-NY)FOOT OF SNOW AND ICE STORM AND NEVER SLIPPED ONCE! EXCELLENT SNOW/ICE TRACTION. THESE TIRES OUT PERFORM ALL MY EXPECTATIONS IN EVERY CATEGORY. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS TIRE FOR ALL SEASON USE. MY WIFE DRIVES THIS VEHICLE MORE THAN ME AND SHE LOVES THE TIRES. I FEEL CONFIDENT WITH THESE TIRES ON HER CAR. I MISTAKENLY BOUGHT THE NEW KUMHO ECSTA 4X TIRES FOR MY MINI COOPER S FROM TIRERACK AND THEY RIDE NOTICEABLY HARDER THAN THE ENVIGORS, WISH I COULD TRADE THEM. I HAVE BOUGHT MANY TIRES IN MY LIFETIME AND THESE ARE ONE OF THE BEST. THEY HAVE A MODERN AGGRESSIVE LOOKING TREAD PATTERN WHICH IS APPEALING BUT THE TREAD PATTERN PICKS UP SMALL PEBBLES, THAT'S THE ONLY LITTLE ANNOYING DOWNSIDE OF THE TIRE.

This is my first set of all-season tires (past 3 sets have been summer), and these are noisier than all the others, equivalent or worse than a fully worn-out set even when they were brand new. They are even noisier than the tires I've had on my last 2 trucks. Durability and performance-wise they are fine, but I will not buy them again because of the tire noise. My last set was General Exclaim UHP summer tires, so I'm not knocking the brand, it's just the tire model. These have better wet traction and better hydroplaning resistance, but that seems to be the only thing going for them.

Recently purchased these tires for my 11' Sonata at the beginning of the winter to replace a set of Yokohama Avid's that were just awful. Right away I noticed a substantial difference in ride comfort, smoothness and noise. We live in Colorado where the weather can change in a matter of minutes. With the first snowfall I just had to test them out on the twisty slick mountain roads and they performed beautifully. Light snow traction was great and deep snow wasn't much worse. They are no dedicated winter tire but for your average driver that doesn't push the limits, these tires are all you need.
I also had them out in a pouring rain storm. Tried to get them to slip but it was next to impossible. To get these tires to fail you in the rain, you'd have to be driving in a way that almost no tire could handle and TRYING to wreck yourself.

Recently, we got caught in a bad snowstorm on the highway. It was perfect timing after the storm started but before the plow trucks could get to it so it was nasty. Whiteout conditions and easily 3 inches of heavy wet slushy snow on the roadway that hadn't been plowed yet. These tires were solid as a rock! My traction control never even had to take over. I felt safe that these tires would hold their own in bad conditions and they did! Highly recommended tire for the casual driver.

As for treadwear, I just inspected my tires after the winter and I see almost no noticeable treadwear. All siping and everything still there. I think these tires will last.
If your looking for all-season flexibility but don't want to sacrifice too much in the snow, these tires will get you around.

I bought these tires not doing enough research to realize they were winter tires, so that is bad on me. However, I have driven roughly 40,000 miles on them, and they have held up well, from -30 to 100 degrees farenheit. I first got them in the winter and was able to hold corners at 15-20 mph in 5 inches of snow. Like one of the other reviewers, they easily handle speeds WELL in excess of posted speed limits here in the U.S. I never had traction issues in any conditions, year round. The biggest issue I had with them is the loss in fuel economy while driving conservatively versus the OEM tires that came with the car. The tread wear was probably exacerbated by the fact that my driving is more aggressive than most, and I used the tires in all seasons. I will attest to the fact that the winter weather handling of these tires helped me avoid several collisions on the roadway.

This is an excellent all season tire and would purchase for an SUV or family sedan. However, I purchased this for my Infiniti G35 which was a mistake since I made tire wear a priority over performance. The drive quality of the Infiniti has deteriorated as these, as expected, do not handle "spiritied" driving as well, and I lose confidence around curves. I should have purchased high performance tires since the "fun" factor is now gone from the Infiniti.

Hated the O.E. Dunlap Runflats because they were uncomfortable and jarring as well as noisy. These 960A/S RFTs are so much smoother and very quiet when compared to the dunlaps. Steering effort is less but the car handles just as well. Overall the car is more settled and comfortable, it just feels more refined under all road conditions. If you are going for a more comfortable ride and want all-season performance while staying with a Runflat this is the best tire in the segment.

(I use g-Force T/A KDW-2 for summer tires). The RE970AS are used late fall to spring. These tires are great, low noise and better cold weather grip. Noticed that they get quieter after a short warm up time, (mile or so). Lots of grip with hard driving, predictable hold and can tell when they are about to break loose. I'd recommend these for all season use, (except I'll still use ultra high performance tires for summer). Can't tell about wear, I haven't had them long enough.
