Which Performance Car Tires Are Good in Snow?

With a variety of weather conditions across the country, choosing the right tire this winter is very important. For example, living in South Bend, Indiana, I have installed the Bridgestone Blizzak WS70 to handle the tough lake-effect snow and cold temperatures we encounter in the area. In certain areas, where snow and ice are fairly infrequent and have the occasional snowstorm, a good set of all-season tires with extended snow and ice capability may be the correct solution. Take a look at a few of the Ultra High Performance All-Season tires with exceptional snow and ice capability.

The Continental ExtremeContact DWS is currently the top-rated tire in the Ultra High Performance All-Season category. The tire has received a high mark for its wet traction, light snow traction and ride comfort in our Customer Surveys. As a result of the softer and more compliant sidewalls, this tire has a slightly slower and softer cornering feel. Here is what one customer had to say about their experience with the Continental ExtremeContact DWS:

"Two thousand miles after I purchased a set of these tires we got 8 inches of snow and I was driving places 4x4s were not. These are by far the best tires I have ever put on a car. Even after 15,000 miles, these tires are still barely worn and look almost brand new." -- Tire Rack Consumer, 1998 Honda Prelude SH

Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus
Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus

The Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus is currently the second-rated tire in the Ultra High Performance All-Season category. This tire offers great dry and wet handling with reasonable light snow traction. From my experience, the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus is a blast to drive in dry conditions, bringing a near summer tire level of traction and cornering feel. The directional tread pattern offers excellent hydroplaning resistance, but proper tire rotations are needed to help ensure they wear evenly. This is an ideal all-season options if you are looking for Corvette tires, BMW tires for your M Series or AMG Mercedes-Benz tires. Here is an example of what consumers are saying about this tire:

"I'm an aggressive driver, and these tires are awesome. No noise problems and handling is more than what I expected. I rotate them every other oil change to keep tread wear even. They have been on my car for about 20,000 miles and are just as good as the first day they were put on." -- Tire Rack Consumer, 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt Coupe SS Turbocharged
