Summer Cleaning with Griot's Garage

The difference is in the details.

I have been a detail nut since age 15 when I was working on my first car, a 1984 GTI. I have fond memories of doing detail work with my parents, when Turtle Wax was the main option available. Today, I find myself doing most of my intense detailing right after winter. However, I have been working on my wife's vehicle for over seven years and we both notice that year after year the vehicle maintains its new look.

Listed below are a few items and steps I use to give my vehicle its great look:

Begin your detail with a high alkalinity, for example Dawn dish soap - this will help strip away any wax from your paint. Next, the Griot's Garage Paint Cleaning Clay helps remove contaminants stuck on the paint before you begin waxing or polishing. I use a good quick detailer, like the Speed Shine as my lubricant. As you work the clay bar back and forth you'll feel its resistance decrease, this means you've removed a good deal of contaminants from your paint. Start small, and work around the entire car. Before you begin washing, remember to wipe the spray detail with a clean towel to avoid the spray drying on the vehicle's paint. Once you have finished, use the Griot's Garage Car Wash to get a clean looking vehicle while being environmentally friendly.

Polishing can take as little or as much time as you'd like. Using Griot's 6" Random Orbital Polisher and Machine Polish Set has made my work quick and easy. While the Random Orbital is safe and harmless on your paint, be careful where you set your buffer and make sure there are no contaminates in the buffing pads. And when it comes time to wash after waxing, Griot's Garage Car Wash is gentle on your wax, yet removes dirt and road grime.

The choice of wax comes down to what you prefer and I personally like Griot's Paint Sealant, as it provides my vehicles with year-round protection without waxing 3-4 times a year. If your preference is for a deeper, glossier and more wet looking shine, than consider the Griot's Best of Show Wax. After waxing, apply Bug Off! to the front surface of your vehicle to help form a protective layer that will make bugs wash off easily when the vehicle is washed again.
