Looking for Value-Priced Max Performance Summer Tires? Sumitomo and Kumho to the Rescue!

Tuesday, August 21, 2012 by Alex Mouroulis

Max Performance Summer tires bring the highest level of grip in wet and dry conditions. This makes them a great choice for aggressive drivers. Due to its four-wheel drive capabilities and overall weight, my vehicle is very hard on tires. Since I need to replace my tires every 10,000-12,000 miles, I look for options that fit my value-minded budget. The following options are two of the best kept secrets in the Max Performance Summer category.

Kumho Ecsta LE Sport

Sumitomo HTR Z III

While the Dunlop SP Sport Maxx TT came in first during our testing and is a great performing tire, it's more expensive in most cases when compared to the Kumho Ecsta LE Sport and Sumitomo HTR Z III. The Sumitomo HTR Z III has excellent ride quality as it provides high-speed handling stability along with traction on dry and wet roads. Kumho's Ecsta LE Sport offers more dry cornering grip, and quicker cornering response. This tire is a great option if you're willing to sacrifice some road noise and ride quality. It's also a good selection for drivers who've installed a coil-over or load exhaust onto their vehicle. The Kumho Ecsta LE Sport isn't available in my size, and I am on my second set of Sumitomo HTR Z III tires. And I'm getting ready to purchase my third!
