Wheels and Tires Made in the USA!

Wednesday, June 18, 2014 by Zig Ziegler

When choosing the right tire or wheel, a very important part of the selection process for some consumers is finding out where the product is made. The following products are a few of our most popular that are exclusively made in the United States.

When looking for tires for your truck, take a look at the Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac or Dick Cepek Fun Country. Both tires can be driven on and off the road, and provide great traction while you play hard. As for wheels, the Black Rock line offers durable and affordable steel options that are manufactured in California.

Looking for Lightweight Track Wheels at a Great Price? The Enkei Racing Series RPF1 is Your Answer

Monday, March 24, 2014 by Zig Ziegler

Autocross and track season are quickly approaching and many racers have already begun to plan for upcoming races and events. As most enthusiasts know, switching out your vehicle's heavy, factory steel or alloy wheels is one of the easiest performance upgrades to your track vehicle. By switching to a lighter weight wheel, your car will instantly feel quicker and respond better compared to your stock wheels. The rotational force to get a lighter weight wheel to move and stop is less, therefore the engine and braking system of the car can respond quicker. Reducing the unsprung weight will also reap benefits when cornering, as the shocks and springs will have less weight to dampen during rebound and compression.

Typically, the answer to a lighter wheel is purchasing a fully forged alloy wheel, however, this option can become expensive for some. There are many highly engineered cast alloy options that are more affordable and provide a great bang for your buck.

Enkei Racing Series' RPF1 uses a revolutionary MAT Process to make lighter weight wheels. MAT is a technology for producing an aluminum wheel by combining Enkei's MAP (Most Advanced Production) and flow-forming forging technology. MAP is a highly automated system. Each process is connected in a single-piece flow system that transports wheels from the melting process, through heat treatment and on to machining. The process of spinning the rim vs. casting it to both shape and elongate it produces a finer, more even aluminum structure and ensures the wheel will remain lightweight and strong. The complete MAT process has a drastic impact on the microstructure of aluminum and results in outstanding improvement of the mechanical property of the material.

As wheels and tires become larger, use of the MAT process to manufacture wheels becomes even more important. In order to reduce weight under a vehicle's suspension, larger wheels must remain light. Enkei Racing Series' new generation of 10% - 15% lighter weight, forged MAT wheels are strong and retain optimum anti-flex properties.

The Enkei Racing Series RPF1 is offered in black painted, bright silver paint, gold painted and special brilliant coating finishes for a wide assortment of vehicles like BMW, Mazda, Subaru and Honda. Shop by vehicle to see if the Enkei Racing Series RPF1 is offered as a performance upgrade for your track car.

Initial Review, 40,000 Miles on Tires
February 14, 2014

I am a class winning autocrosser, and a performance car enthusiast. My judgments consider the cost and class of the tire. I am not the primary driver of this vehicle, but often carpool with my wife and take this car on long trips.

I have owned three sets of this particular tire. The first are on the factory wheels that have been replaced with aftermarket ones. These still have great tread and I still use them from time to time. The second set was on a set of aftermarket wheels once the car was lowered. With a Good alignment and proper rotations, we got **40k miles** (note the tread wear rating indicates they will last about 31k miles) out of this set, only driving down to the wear indicators. Currently have about 8-10k on our third set.
For the price, these tires are absolutely unbeatable. During spirited, mountain road, dry conditions they performed very well and very predictably. Easily outpaced novice drivers in a slower car on the tail of the dragon. However, their peak grip does not approach that of a performance summer tire. During wet city and highway conditions these tires are excellent. Their wet grip and resistance to hydroplaning is stellar for their price. Even right before we replaced the second set they inspired confidence and maintained a high degree of hydroplane resistance in all but full on, standing water. We only recently experienced snow that was worthy of reviewing. I have to say I was completely surprised these tires performed as well as they did. These tires on this car easily went where my primary vehicle (a heavier car with Michelin All-Seasons, more ground clearance, and a limited slip differential) would never have ever gone. With smart, cautious driving I would trust these tires in up to 4 inches of powder any day of the week.

These are an excellent, all around, affordable, tire and simply cannot be beaten for their price. I will continue to purchase these for all of my commuting vehicles and recommend them to all.

Best Replacement Tires for the Honda Odyssey

Thursday, February 27, 2014 by Zig Ziegler

When shopping for tires for the Honda Odyssey most customers tend to look for tires that are quiet, comfortable riding and provide good traction in snow and on ice. Because of the large open space inside the cabin of the minivan, road noise is always an issue. Choosing the right tire can really make a big difference.

A few great options to consider when replacing tires on your Honda Odyssey include the Goodyear Assurance ComforTred Touring, Continental CrossContact LX20 with EcoPlus Technology and Firestone's Precision Touring. All three provide the best blend of ride/noise comfort, all-season traction and price.

 Goodyear Assurance ComorTred Touring

Goodyear's Assurance ComforTred Touring features a mildly asymmetric tread design that combines independent shoulder blocks with notched intermediate and center ribs to blend dry and wet road traction and handling. Four wide circumferential grooves evacuate water from under the tread to enhance wet traction while the tread grooves, notches and sipes form biting edges to deliver all-season traction in light snow.

The tire's internal construction includes a super shock absorbent Comfort Layer of rubber sandwiched between the tread and steel belts to insulate vibration and impacts with expansion joints, potholes and bumps. It also features Goodyear's dual-layer ComfortEdge sidewall supports to provide a balance of ride comfort and handling.

CrossContact LX20 with EcoPlus Technology tires from Continental use an all-season tread compound featuring their Tg-F Polymers and +Silane additives to improve treadwear, fuel efficiency and traction on slippery roads. The compound is molded into a symmetric tread design with notched outboard shoulders, independent intermediate tread blocks and continuous center ribs to blend on-road steering response and straight-line stability with reduced noise and enhanced ride comfort. All sizes of the CrossContact LX20 come with a flanged lower sidewall to help reduce the possibility of curb damage to expensive wheels.

The Precision Touring is Firestone's Standard Touring All-Season tire developed for the drivers of coupes, sedans, family minivans and crossover vehicles looking for year-round capability and comfort. Affordably priced, the tire is designed to blend long treadwear, a quiet ride and all-season traction on dry and wet roads, as well as in light snow.

Precision Touring tires mold a silica-enhanced all-season tread compound into a symmetric design featuring wide shoulders flanking interlocking ribs to provide dry road response and handling. Four circumferential grooves help guide water through the tire's footprint for wet traction while multiple notches and sipes provide the biting edges to enhance traction in light snow. The tire's structure includes twin, high tensile steel belts on top of a polyester casing to deliver strength, ride quality and handling.

Time for new tires on your beloved Honda Fit Sport? The Original Equipment size of 185/55R16 offered two options, the Bridgestone Turanza EL470 and Dunlop SP Sport 7000 A/S. Best Nissan Murano Tires for All-Season and Snow Traction.

Wednesday, September 25, 2013 by Gary Stanley

My in-laws recently purchased a 2010 Nissan Murano SL. They were looking for a crossover SUV to use for traveling and daily driving and this vehicle fit the bill perfectly. While the Murano was in excellent condition, the tires were not. The tires' remaining tread depth measured at 4/32" in the rear and closer to 2/32" in the front. With winter fast approaching, this is not an acceptable tread depth for reliable snow traction that we need in this part of the country. We recommend a minimum tread depth of 6/32" to begin a winter season. Below this depth and the tire is reduced to "nibbling" at the snow rather than biting through it to find traction.

I prefer winter / snow tires for our area, especially due to the heavy lake effect snowstorms that frequent during the winter months. Winter tires, like the Bridgestone Blizzak DM-V1, have much better winter traction than an all-season option. You can view my experience with this tire on a crossover vehicle by reading "My Story on Winter Tires."

However, my in-laws only to want purchase a single set of tires to use year-round, so I needed to find them an all-season tire with especially good snow traction. Affordable tires with great ride quality, treadwear and wet traction were also high on their priority list. Rather than purchase aftermarket rims, these were to be installed on the factory aluminum alloy wheels. Based on their situation, I recommended three tires, the Continental CrossContact LX20 with EcoPlus Technology, Bridgestone Dueler H/L 422 Ecopia and Firestone Destination LE 2

Which tires did they choose? It would be hard to go wrong with any of these tires as they're all very highly ranked in our customer survey results. After looking over our data, customer reviews and tire tests, they chose the Continental Cross Contact LX20 with EcoPlus Technology for its winter traction and 70,000-mile treadwear warranty.

Steel Wheels for Off-Roading Now Available

Wednesday, September 25, 2013 by Ben Rooney

After receiving numerous inquiries from customers seeking a steel wheel suitable for off-road use on trucks, we have added the Black Rock line of steel wheels. These ruggedly constructed wheels are available in a wide range of popular sizes for light trucks and utility vehicles.

Heavier than most other wheels we carry, Black Rock wheels are built for durability in harsh environments and are affordable enough that most owners will not be shy about taking them into off-road conditions. Unlike many inexpensive wheel brands, Black Rock manufactures their wheels in the United States. Taking their cue from Henry Ford, Black Rock steel wheels are available in any color you want, as long as it's black.

While there is only one color choice, there are several different styles and sizes to choose from. Diameters range from 15" to 17". Widths range from 7" to 10". Not all styles or sizes are available for every application, so make sure to shop by vehicle to see which wheels are made for your truck. While you're at it, look at maximum-traction mud tires to pair with a Black Rock wheel to create a true off-road Tire & Wheel Package.

Advantages of a Winter / Snow Tire & Wheel Package

Wednesday, September 18, 2013 by Steve Huffman

Every winter, drivers are faced with the dangerous task of navigating highways and streets that are covered with ice and snow. Municipal budgets are strained and the roads aren't always plowed and cared for like they should. Choosing to go with a dedicated Winter / Snow Tire & Wheel Package provides several advantages.

The traction capabilities of any winter tire is far superior to that of an all-season option. They give you total confidence and allow you to drive safely in winter's toughest conditions. Rather than just putting a set of winter tires on your stock wheels, a set of winter wheels gives you more flexibility and options. Many times you're able to downsize the wheel, which also permits you to choose a tire that is a little more narrow. Narrower tires in the winter will perform better since they have less ice and snow to plow through. Also, downsizing the wheel means that the sidewall of the tire will be a little taller, therefore protecting you against those inevitable potholes that can't always be seen in the snow. A dedicated set of winter wheels will help keep your summer wheels in good condition by keeping them out of winter elements.

When you choose a Winter / Snow Tire & Wheel Package, you're ready for winter as soon as it starts snowing. We will mount and balance your package for free. You may think that this option would be too expensive, however we offer several wheels that can make this a very affordable option. Some advantages to ordering a package, include:

  • Inexpensive winter options make packages affordable
  • Easy, bolt-on installation before the first snow
  • Detailed installation instructions included
  • Never pay for mount/re-mount again
  • All necessary hardware (lugs, center caps, centering rings, etc.) included at no charge with most wheels

Be prepared to tackle winter conditions with a Winter / Snow Tire & Wheel Package!

New From Europe: Anzio Wheels

Wednesday, August 14, 2013 by Ben Rooney

From the same group that brought us the popular RIAL brand, we are proud to carry Anzio wheels, too. They offer European design and construction at prices that are extremely affordable. We are currently offering four different styles: Light, Turn, Vision and Wave.

The Light is a 7-spoke design in a silver finish that would go well on sport compact cars. It comes in some of the common 5-lug bolt patterns, but is also available in 5x108 and 4-lug patterns that aren't as commonly available. Sizes range from 14" to 17" and introductory prices range from $84 to $119*.

Turn wheels are a split 5-spoke design that cover many of the same smaller diameters as the Light, but adds 18" applications. The 5-spoke pattern is versatile and can look good on a wide variety of vehicles. Introductory prices go from $84 to $143*. Initially arriving in silver, the Turn will also have black finish versions available.

The Vision is a motorsport-inspired design with branching spokes. This style is common to European wheels and has become popular across a wide variety of brands. It will cover sizes from 14" to 18" with silver and matte grey finishes available.

Anzio's Wave is a sculpted 5-spoke pattern available only in a silver finish. Sizes range from 14" to 17" with pricing from $86-$124*. The range of applications and bolt patterns are similar to that of the Light.

Kosei K4R Real World Reviews

Tuesday, July 9, 2013 by Ben Rooney

Kosei has a long history of building lightweight wheels at affordable prices. Their latest offering is the K4R. This 9-spoke wheel has been available for over a year, so we have been able to collect some real world feedback from customers who have put this wheel through its paces under demanding conditions. Below you will find quotes taken from customers about their experience with the Kosei K4R:

"I bought these for my fourth-generation Civic racer, as they are nearly half the weight of the wheel I had before. They are an excellent quality wheel and seemed to take the punishment of racing in their stride."

"The rim is a great value, very light and very easy to clean. I recommend these rims for anyone with 2008+ STI looking for a 17'' winter set-up."

"Fitment is great, as is improved handling - with the lighter unsprung weight (~4lbs. a corner) the car glides better over rougher surfaces and is more planted. Took it to MSR Houston roadcourse on 6/21 and had a blast...no issues whatsoever with the wheels on the track."

It's a tribute to the design and engineering expertise of Kosei that they can make a lightweight wheel that holds up both to the extremes of the race track and the punishment of winter weather. To accomplish this at a price that is highly affordable (range from $144 to $199 depending on size) is even more commendable. Wheel weight is between 11 and 16 lbs. depending on size and vehicle application.

The K4R is available in a limited number of fitments, so before you finalize your wheel buying decision, shop by vehicle to confirm if the K4R will fit your car.

These tires are great so far much better then the Dunlop's that cam on my 2011 Subaru WRX. they made a huge difference in handling with an proper alignment. I am very vigorous on checking inflation rates as well. Dry weather- Hnadles excellent steering response turn-in and driver control/confidence. Wet- Handles great in my opinion drove through plarge puddles with plenty of confidence no hydroplaning in the rain now this might be bias due to the Subaru AWD system(4wheels are always in motion)But over all I like them so far and have owned several Kumho's in the past like the Ecsta and ASX. My favorite were the ASX and I really wanted the 4X this time around but didn't have the budget. So there you go if you want an inexpinsive affordable tire with great control low noise and grip in dry weather and decent in wet weather BUY THIS. If you have the extra money get the KUMHO 4X and Im sure you will be happy.

When Should I Remove My Winter / Snow Tires?

Thursday, March 21, 2013 by Colin .

People often ask when they should put on and remove their winter / snow tires. Typically, the time most drivers have their winter tires on their vehicle is from late November to early April.

It's important to use them only during the winter months in an attempt to maximize their treadlife. As illustrated in the photo below, tread depth is one of the most important features of a winter tire.

New Tire Tread Depth   Approaching Winter
Wear Indicators
  Approaching Tread
Wear Indicators

Combines necessary features (tread design, compound and depth) to provide effective snow traction   The tire has worn to about 6/32", where its ability to provide beneficial snow traction diminishes   While still legal at 2/32", the tire has worn well past the depth where it provides beneficial snow traction

All that being said, for much of the country, it's close to the time to switch to your non-winter tires or purchase a new set. We offer many affordable tire options to fit your budget. Also, nothing changes the appearance of your vehicle more than a new set of aftermarket wheels. You can even see what your car will look like with new wheels when you visit our Upgrade Garage.

Hard to believe that this tire is rated below the Dunlop Wintersport M3, which is a fine winter tire but inferior to the Sottozero II's, specially in the dry. Very happy with this tire, they also outperform the OEM Pirelli P-Zero All Seasons that came with the car, which were H-rated and very unstable at high speeds. I highly recommended this tire, it was the most affordable for the original VW GTi's 18" wheels , and as a bonus it performs great in the dry, far better than any All-season tire.
