Initial Review, 400 Miles on Tires
January 21, 2012

First iuse this tire for track days. The car has 19" wheels so all tires are expensive. I run the tires until the bead shows. I have run r compound ties, michielin sport cups (3), Hoosier A6 (1), street compounds Michelin PS2 (4) super sports (4), Yokohama sport vans (6) ADVAN AD08. It is within this experience that I report on the RE11. The number in the parenthesis is the number of track days I got out of each tire. The RE11 lasted 7 track days and stick well, not as good as the R-compound as you might suspect. The ADVANs wore well but did not stick. The RE11 are a good compromise of wear (cost) and grip. Until I win the lottery and can afford to rin the R-compound I'll stick with the RE11s

KMC XD Series Monster - Aggressive Style

Monday, January 30, 2012 by Alex Mouroulis
KMC XD Series MonsterThe KMC XD Series Monster brings an aggressive style to your four-wheel drive pickup truck or SUV. Featuring a split-spoke design, the Monster's center is tucked back further than the lip section, offering a wide stanced, off-road appearance.

Designed using the gravity casting construction method, the wheel offers excellent quality at a very affordable price. It has a multi-piece look that emulates the appearance of more expensive beadlock truck wheels. Lug heads are actually cast into the wheel to create the two-piece effect.

Featuring a covered lug design, the Monster keeps the appearance of your 4x4 smooth and sleek. Monster wheels are offered in the modern 5- ,6- and 8-lug bolt spreads to fit your rig, with offsets ranging between +35 and -44. The wheel is available in the following sizes:
  • 18x9
  • 20x9
  • 20x10
  • 22x9.5
  • 22x11
  • 24x10
Available in black (shown above) and chrome, the Monster from KMC XD Series is a great option to improve the appearance of your vehicle.

Affordable 20" and Larger Yokohama SUV Tires and Yokohama Truck Tires

Thursday, January 12, 2012 by Marshall Wisler
If you oYokohama Parada Spec-Xwn a sport truck, SUV or vehicle capable of fitting 20" and larger wheels, you may have become accustomed to paying high prices for tires or sacrificing quality to meet your budget. Recently, as larger wheel and tire assemblies have become more mainstream, the cost for these larger tires have fallen.

Although tires that feature a larger inside diameter and width may never be as cost-effective as traditional 15-17" sizes, it seems that on a daily basis I'm able to stun customers with prices that are lower than they expected.

One of my favorite selections to recommend to customers looking for a 20"-28" tire is the Yokohama Parada Spec-X. This tire, available in 39 different sizes, makes selection easy and affordable. With a speed rating of either H or V, these Yokohama tires also meet most manufactures' requirements for use on today's high performance vehicles. Featuring an all-season compound with a host of biting edges, the Yokohama Parada Spec-X is designed for use in all climates.

If you're looking for Yokohama tire reviews of the Parada Spec-X take a look at our Tire Survey Results.

So i bought a set of star specs because of all the rave reviews ive seen here and otherwise. Greatest investment ive made in a long time. Granted, I literally only have about 100 miles on the tire currently, they are wooooooorlds better then the crap rsa's that came with the car. there is no more hesitation or nervousnes. the tires react instantly to any input from the steering wheel, and this is all while still wearing the flashing away. All this goodness and still very affordable. would recomend to anyone who is looking for a "fun" tire.

Initial Review, 83000 Miles on Tires
December 18, 2011

I got 83,000 miles on these tires and they still looked decent. Tire shop said that the tires would probably just fail due to wear than the tread wearing out. I figures with 83,000 miles it was better to replace them for new tires than take a chance of a blow out on the highway. The tires are bullet proof; excellent handling, incredible wear, fantastic smooth ride. I replaced them with same tires since it made sense not to try anything different. Well, after 40,000 miles I got a freakin nail in my front right side near the sidewall that could not be repaired with a plug. I learned that with an AWD vehilce you need to replace all 4 tires and not just one or two as you can do with a front or rear wheel drive vehicle. I couldn't put out the $1K for the Michelin's I wanted so I ended up with some Dunlop's AT20. Not exactly the same quality so I'll see how these do in comparison to the Michelin's. Recommendation: if you can afford the LTX M/S, buy them, you will not be disappointed!

This is my second set. Recently purchased a more aggressive wheel setup and naturally went with Hankooks. Running 235/40 fronts and 265/35 rears and continue to be pleased with the performance of such affordable tires! Yes, they need to warm up and yes, they will break traction if I want, but most of the time they are SOLID performers, rain or shine. I now have a wider patch front and rear and I still find it hard to break traction, even in the rain. I don't track them, but I really appreciate the value they bring on my daily driver. Recently went on a local club run through the twisties from the "mountain" near Skyline Drive and they held up extremely well. Even if I don't get 20K miles on them, buying them is so easy because they are so inexpensive...today.

Initial Review, 30000 Miles on Tires
November 03, 2011

I have had these tires for 30,000 miles. The wear is very good on these for being a winter tire. I had to leave these on the rear as i could afford different ones. So even on the rear the tread wear is very good. I will be using these this year and I have put the front ones back on for the winter. They have when above and beyond the call of duty for a snow tire. The Honda will go through 11" of snow(that was our first snow last year) and these are 1st tire I've had that didn't pull when you hit that unexpected patch of slush. My wife drives to Madison and back for work(75 mile round trip) and i feel better knowing these are on the car. We also have them on her Suzuki X90, 4X4 (11,000 miles),so it's a real, rear wheel drive when not in 4 wheel drive and it's a blast to drive when the snow flies!!! These are a must buy if you want to save a few$s over blizzaks. They are noisier but that's what you get with a snow tire. It's worth it!

2011+ Ford Focus Tires and Wheels for Winter

Tuesday, November 22, 2011 by Marshall Wisler
Due to the Ford Focus Steel Wheelrecent sales success of the popular and newly redesigned Ford Focus, many customers have been calling in exploring their options for dedicated winter / snow tires.

This hot new hatch and sedan, dependent on trim level, came with 15"-17" wheel fitments and several different Original Equipment tire selections. Regardless of model and trim levels, the modern Ford Focus shares the same brakes and wheel hubs. This allows us to recommend and supply a large number of wheel fitments including steel wheels (car rims).

This season, Tire Rack's recommendation for a Winter / Snow Tire & Wheel Package mirrors my own personal choice: the low-cost option of a 15" steel wheel paired with the Bridgestone Blizzak WS70 tire is a hard to beat combination of performance and affordability. Of course, alloy wheels are available for those looking for a more aesthetically pleasing setup.

And if you could use some extra help on whether to choose an alloy or steel wheel, read "Alloy vs. Steel Wheels in Winter Tire & Wheel Packages."

BMW Wheels Now Available in Black

Sport Edition A7 (Black)
Finding 17" wheels that fit the 2007-2012 BMW 335i isn't easy due to the large brakes on the car. While many feel that the Rial Salerno is a perfect balance of cost, appearance and quality for a Winter / Snow Tire & Wheel Package setup, others like the Sport Edition A7 as a lower-cost alternative.

New for this winter season, the affordable and popular Sport Edition A7 wheel is now in stock in a black painted finish. I've already received many emails and interest in the new color, as the black finish helps hide brake dust and accepts BMW center caps just like the silver painted version of the wheel.

And with 45 different Sport Edition wheels available, you're sure to find one that suits your driving style.

Winter Wheels: Alloy vs. Steel

Wednesday, November 2, 2011 by Logan Woodworth
As the snow starts to fly, there's a mad rush for customers to get winter wheels and tires. However, should you order steel or alloy wheels with your Winter / Snow Tire & Wheel Package? The decision depends on the vehicle, price, the customer's needs and availability.

Availability: Certain vehicles can only be installed with alloy wheels, as steel wheels are not designed as aftermarket rims (wheels) for all applications.

Price: Steel wheels are the most affordable option even when you add a set of wheel covers to your purchase. However, the price differeSteel Wheelnce can be minimal at times and many customers choose alloy wheels because they prefer the look and ease of not purchasing wheel covers.

Appearance: Obviously, there are many more styles of alloy wheels available than the simple black steel wheels. For some drivers, this is important. For others, the black steel wheel is perfectly sufficient.

Performance: Alloy wheels offer several performance advantages over steel. Compared to a steel wheel, an alloy wheel is lighter, stronger and will not rust. To gain a better understanding of how to compare alloy to steel wheels, read "Alloy vs. Steel Wheels in Winter Tire & Wheel Packages."

Firestone WinterforceFor drivers who experience winter driving year after year, purchasing a Winter / Snow Tire & Wheel Package will save you money over time. With a Tires and Wheels Package, you eliminate mounting and balancing truck snow tires, SUV snow tires or any type of winter / snow tire on a different set of wheels. With a dedicated set of wheels, you can install the Tire & Wheel Package yourself and be prepared for any unexpected early storms. Also, be sure to look at affordable wheels such as steel wheels to lower the cost of your Tire & Wheel Package. If you have questions on whether steel wheels are the right choice for your vehicle, read "Alloy vs. Steel Wheels in Winter Tire & Wheel Packages." Tire Storage Solutions

Wednesday, September 21, 2011 by Jonas Paeplow
Here in northern Indiana, winter tires are really a must to give you the greatest degree of mobility in the accompanying snowy and icy weather. With three vehicles and the need to store at least two sets of tires and wheels for each, I was beginning to feel buried in a sea of tires. I needed to come up with a solution to the impending chaos. Fortunately for me, Tire Rack has several tire storage options.

Choosing the right tire storage solution can reduce clutter, improve tire care and enhance safety. Solutions to tire storage range from wall mounted steel racks that hold one set of (4) tires, to covers for tires stored vertically and individual covers or totes that can help transport or store tires protected from the elements. Read Tire Rack's recommendations for storing tires safely.

Wall Mounted Tire Storage RackThe Tire Storage Rack has a flexible design that allows room for a set of tires and wheels and can be adjusted to accommodate "aggressive" tire widths. The adjustable rack quickly attaches to wall studs providing a convenient and safe storage method. Its heavy-duty construction has been load tested to a weight capacity of 400 lbs. An average Tire & Wheel Package usually only weighs in the neighborhood of 150 lbs. This systems works great for my larger SUV tires. This wall mounted storage rack is easy to install with simple hand tools as you can see in the Installation Instructions (PDF)

The Tire GarageAnother way to keep your tires organized is the Tire Garage. It allows you to store tires covered, keeping them clean, dry and protected. Tires are stored vertically to keep them organized and free up extra space in your garage or storage area. The Tire Garage is made of the same rugged, mildew resistant and weatherproof material used for boat covers. The material cleans easily and retains its color and strength after years of normal use. I chose the Tire Garage to store my son's tires as his are smaller than mine. The maximum tire diameter that this storage method can accommodate is 27". Even though the material used in this system protects tires from UV radiation, it is not recommended for outdoor use. Follow these handy Installation Instructions (PDF) for use.

Seasonal Tire Totes
The Tire Rack Seasonal Tire Tote is another storage option that affords you the opportunity to both store and/or transport your tires safely. *This "one size fits all" storage system takes the hassle and mess out of changing from winter tires to summer tires or transporting track tires in the trunk or on the back seat of a car. I like the totes for my wife's tires as her car has TPMS sensors that need to be initialized at the dealer when the tires are installed and I can transport them easier this way.

The heavy-duty, machine washable shell incorporates an extra strong, easy-to-carry handle and rugged polyester/nylon construction. The cover slips easily over the tire to protect clothing and a vehicle's interior from tire and brake residue. See how easy it is with the Installation Instructions (PDF).

There are also available optional wheel felts to help protect your nice alloy wheels from nicks and scratches during transport or storage. Both the Tire Totes and Wheel Felts are sold in pairs. With Tire Rack Tire Totes, tires stay neatly covered and stacked until next season or the next event. Winter is just around the corner. Pick the best storage solution for your tires at Tire Rack today.

*The Seasonal Tire Totes will fit tires from 22" to 31" in diameter and up to 11.5" wide.

Affordable Performance From Bridgestone and Sport Edition

Wednesday, August 31, 2011 by Jonas Paeplow
InBridgestone Potenza RE760 Sport a previous post, I mentioned that my son and I had installed a nice Tire & Wheel Package on his car. We had originally intended to purchase a little lighter, more expensive wheel, but after a fender bender cut into our budget, we began exploring other options. This time using a sharper pencil. We still wanted as good a performing tire and wheel combination as we could now afford. We had already decided to install a plus zero fitment. We increased the tire size and the wheel width without going to a larger diameter wheel.

The Mitsubishi Eclipse GS came equipped with 205/55-16 tires mounted on 16x6" alloy wheels. In place of the stock package we installed 225/50-16 Bridgestone Potenza RE760 Sport tires mounted on 16x7" wheels. This gave us a wider tire with a larger potential contact patch without changing speedometer and odometer accuracy, as both sizes measure the same (24.9") diameter.

The wheel we chose was a great looking, sturdy, lightweight and reasonably priced, Sport Edition D5. We decided on the Sport Edition D5 for several reasons: at 18 lbs. it is relatively light for its size. It is a low-pressure cast (reduces voids in the metal) aluminum alloy wheel that is shot peened to relieve stresses in the finished product. Each wheel then undergoes X-ray and ultrasound inspection to ensure continuity of the casting process. The anodized aluminum alloy wheel is then primed and powder coated silver. Each wheel then receives a high gloss clear finish coat. The finish on this wheel gives it very strong resilience to the harsh elements of sun, Sport Edition D5rain, detergents and even winter weather conditions. The Sport Edition D5 also has the extra benefit of certification standards from JWL and VIA. These quality inspections and tests are much more stringent than those required of wheels manufactured as Original Equipment on many applications. All of this in one wheel at a great low price.

The combination of the wider but lighter wheel reduces rolling or "unsprung" weight and the wider, Ultra High Performance Summer Bridgestone Potenza RE760 Sport really transformed the handling on this car. It corners like it's on rails now. You truly can afford performance, if you know where and how to look.

Producing racing wheels for ForEnkei Racing Series NT03-M Bright Silvermula One, WRC and Super GT Series, Enkei knows how to engineer wheels. The challenge is to make a wheel that's both light and strong. New wheels need to look good but heavy wheels will hurt braking, acceleration and steering feel. Friday, August 5, 2011 by Marshall Wisler
Hankook Ventus AS RH07Many consumers want to find a great tire at a great price when it comes time to replace their Original Equipment tires. O.Z. Racing Alleggerita HLT for Porsche Cayman

Friday, July 22, 2011 by Cy Chowattukunnel
O.Z. Alleggerita HLTAre you looking for affordable track wheels for your Cayman? Then take a look at the O.Z. Racing Alleggerita HLT.

The Alleggerita HLT offers a very unique combination of low weight, O.Z. engineering and great value. The High Light Technology (HLT) uses rollers to compress and elongate material along the barrel of a low-pressure cast aluminum wheel to produce the desired profile. This particular process is derived from O.Z.'s experience in F1 and produces a wheel that is extremely light and strong. Combining the HLT technologies with the flow forming process creates mechanical features similar to those of a forged wheel. This allows for a dramatic reduction in wheel weight while enhancing structural rigidity vs. a standard cast wheel.

Ideal tire sizing will vary depending on your Cayman's suspension tuning and/or fender modifications. Listed below are a few common sizes Cayman drivers enjoying running:

245/40-18 front and 275/35-18 rear
245/35-18 front and 295/30-18 rear

Combining the O.Z Racing Alleggerita HLT with the Hankook Ventus Z214 Track & Competition tires in 245/40-18 front and 275/35-18 rear sizing creates a Tire & Wheel Package at $2,444* plus shipping.

Breyton Wheels Are Not Just for BMWs Anymore

Thursday, June 2, 2011 by Doc Horvath
From their beginning, Breyton has focused on wheels specifically designed for BMW applications and has developed a reputation for quality and style. Breyton recently created the BE brand to provide great looking and affordable wheels for a variety of other makes (Audi, VW, Acura/Honda to name a few). I was asked to bring my Pontiac G8 into the photo studio a few months ago to see how a set of the 19" GTS-AV wheels would look on the vehicle:

BreytonGTS AV

The GTS-AV is modeled after the very popular Race-GTS model that Breyton has sold for many years, and features the classic "split spoke" or mesh design that is popular with European sedans like the BMW 5 series. Staggered options are available for rear-wheel drive cars like mine, and the wheel is available in either a black or sliver painted finish as shown above. Wheel fitments are also available for Audi TT, A3, A6 and some S4 and S6 applications, as well as Cadillac CTS and Acura TL and TSX.

Find Your Wheels for Winter

Friday, October 22, 2010 by Grant Edwards

Sport Edition A7Every year, we all spend a great deal of time in the fall winterizing our homes. For example my mother-in-law spares no time in bringing large pallets of insulation wrap and duct tape to my home for all of my windows. In the same vein, we must also winterize our vehicles.

You need winter tires and wheels. If you're like me, you definitely do not want to damage your expensive factory wheels. I recommend a set of our aluminum alloy-based aftermarket wheels.

A popular, affordable brand is from our Sport Edition line -- the Sport Edition A7. This a one-piece, gravity casted, silver painted wheel with overall winter durability, curb appeal and low maintenance.

Create a Winter / Snow Tire & Wheel Package and save the cost associated with mounting and balancing winter tires on your current wheels. And save the wear and tear on those wheels!
